STORYLINE:

Thousands of Palestinians were seen carrying bags of flour on their backs as they returned from the Zikim crossing on Tuesday.

Issa Khader, an Arabic language teacher displaced from northern Gaza, carried a bag of flour for his family of six. They have been forced to move six times between different tents. Khader described the flour as “white gold.”

"I walked about 15 kilometers (9.3mi), dragged 3 kilometers (1.9mi) and walked under fire," he said. "And God knows, I said goodbye to my children, because I might return, carried by people or wounded.”

Footage filmed by The Associated Press showed injured people being transported on donkey carts.

This comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted at wider military action in devastated Gaza on Tuesday, even as former Israeli army and intelligence chiefs called for an end to the nearly 22-month war.

The new pressure on Netanyahu came as Gaza's Health Ministry said the Palestinian death toll had surpassed 61,000. Health officials reported new deaths of hungry Palestinians seeking food at distribution points. As desperation mounts, the Israeli defense body coordinating aid announced a deal with local merchants to improve aid deliveries.

Several hundred Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since May while heading toward food distribution sites, airdropped parcels and aid convoys, according to witnesses, local health officials and the U.N. human rights office. Israel's military says it only has fired warning shots and disputes the toll.

The wife of South Korea’s ousted former President Yoon Suk Yeol appeared for questioning by a special prosecutor on Wednesday, as investigators expanded a probe into suspicions of stock manipulation, bribery, and interference in party nominations.

The investigation into Kim Keon Hee is one of three separate special prosecutor probes launched under Seoul’s new liberal government targeting the presidency of Yoon, who was removed from office in April and re-arrested last month over his brief imposition of martial law in December.

The conservative's abrupt and poorly planned power grab on Dec. 3 came during a seemingly routine standoff with the liberals, whom he described as "anti-state" forces abusing their legislative majority to obstruct his agenda. Some political opponents have questioned whether Yoon's actions were at least partly motivated by growing allegations against his wife, which hurt his approval ratings and gave political ammunition to his rivals.

"I apologize for causing concern to the people, even though I am someone insignificant,” Kim told reporters as she arrived for questioning. She added that she would sincerely cooperate with the investigation, before walking away without responding to specific questions about the allegations.

Through a heavy police presence, dozens of Yoon’s supporters gathered outside the special prosecutor’s office in downtown Seoul, waving South Korean and U.S. flags and banners in light rain.

Yoon, who was sent back to prison last month and faces a high-stakes trial on rebellion and other charges, resisted an attempt by investigators last week to compel him for questioning over his wife. Investigators said he took off his prison uniform and laid down on the floor of his cell in his underwear before they gave up executing the warrant to detain him. They plan to negotiate with Yoon’s lawyers to arrange a possible questioning.

Yoon and Kim have faced suspicions of exerting undue influence over the conservative People Power Party to nominate a specific candidate for a 2022 parliamentary by-election, allegedly at the request of Myung Tae-kyun, an election broker and founder of a polling agency who conducted free opinion surveys for Yoon before he became president.

STORYLINE:

Dozens of people gathered on Monday in Ivankovychi, a village outside Kyiv, to bury four members of the Haiovyi family – a mother and her two sons, along with her brother – all killed during a Russian missile strike on July 31.

Natalia Haiova, a kindergarten teacher, had returned to her native village three years ago.

On the night of the attack, she was staying at her mother’s apartment in Kyiv with her middle son, Roman, and eldest son, Vladyslav.

All three, along with Natalia’s brother, were killed when a missile destroyed the rooms they were in.

“She was very kind. Roman always laughed the loudest. And Vlad – he was a romantic. He wrote poems, played guitar and harmonica. He and his girlfriend were about to move in together,” said Olena Stetsiuk, Natalia’s cousin and Roman’s godmother.

The procession walked from the village church to the cemetery, accompanied by funeral chants.

At the gravesite, mourners gave speeches.

“They were very close to me. Some people say that eight years is not very long, but we bonded very strongly,” said Angelina Savchenko, Vladyslav’s girlfriend.

The couple was planning to get married after moving in together in an apartment in Kyiv.

"We wanted to become one big family. Well, I'm already part of their family, even without a wedding ring. It doesn't matter anymore."

Health officials in Gaza said Israeli forces opened fire Tuesday morning toward Palestinians seeking aid and in targeted attacks in central and southern Gaza, killing at least 45 people.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which has said after previous shootings around aid distribution that it only fired warning shots at people who approached its forces.

The dead include at least 26 people killed in the Morag Corridor, an Israeli military zone where looters and desperate crowds unloaded UN aid convoys.

Another six were killed in Teina, near a road leading to a site run by the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an American contractor.

Morgue records at the nearby Nasser Hospital, which received the bodies, detailed the deaths and locations.

The hospital is part of the Health Ministry, which doesn’t distinguish between militants and civilians but says roughly half the dead from the war have been women and children.

The ministry operates under the Hamas government.

The UN and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of casualty data.

STORYLINE:

Attendees at Hiroshima's Memorial Park commemorated early on Wednesday those who lost their lives in the atomic bombing of the Japanese city by the U.S. 80 years ago.

As they did so, many aging survivors expressed their frustration at the growing support among global leaders of acquiring nuclear weapons as a deterrent.

With the number of survivors rapidly declining and their average age now exceeding 86, the anniversary is considered the last milestone event for many of them.

94-year-old atomic bomb survivor, Minoru Suzutou, went down on his knees while praying in front of the Cenotaph Arch.

"In 10 years and 20 years, there will be no one left to pass on this sad and painful experience. That's why I want to share as much as I can," he said.

47-year-old Keisuke Azuma came with his six-year-old daughter because he thinks it's important to pass on the memories to the next generation.

Azuma has no relatives who suffered in the atomic bombing, but he considers it important to reflect on the event and "show more interest and respect" now that there are fewer people who lived through the bombing.

Jeffrey Epstein’s ex-girlfriend wants to keep grand jury records secret in the sex trafficking case that sent her to prison.

 

Associated Press reporter Eric Tucker says Maxwell’s lawyers said so in a court filing Tuesday, writing that Maxwell hasn’t seen the material herself.

 

“She says the material amounts to hearsay and it's not material that should be seen by the general public,” Tucker said.

 

The grand jury process is conducted behind closed doors.
