  • Thai authorities seize more than two tonnes of crystal meth worth over $90 million
    (23 Jun 2025)

    Bangkok, Thailand - 23 June 2025
    1. Various of officers arranging seized crystal meth on table in the Thai Justice Ministry
    2. Wide of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra speaking to media
    3. SOUNDBITE (Thai) Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thai Prime Minister:
"I'd like to ensure the people that the government is serious about our policies on drugs, and all agencies are ready to work with the government to achieve those goals."
    4. Various of officers arranging seized crystal meth on table in the Thai Justice Ministry
    STORYLINE:
Over 2 metric tonnes of crystal methamphetamine were seized from a tourist boat near a pier in Eastern Thailand before they were smuggled out of the country, authorities said on Monday.
Eight men were arrested Saturday in Rayong province for allegedly attempting to smuggle nearly 2.4 metric tons (2.6 tons) of crystal meth out of the country through the southern border by boat, officials said.
They did not elaborate on the drugs’ intended destination.
At Bangkok's Justice Ministry, officers from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) carried in dozens of bags containing crystal meth earlier on Monday, placing them on tables in neat rows before a press briefing, with Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in attendance.
The value of the drugs, if sold abroad, is estimated to be over 3 billion baht ($90.8 million), Thailand's Department of Special Investigation said.
The crystal meth, also known as “ice” in Thailand, was packed in plastic bags disguised as corn flour packages. Each bag contained about one kilogram of the drug.
In handout video from the DSI, an officer was seen cutting open a concealed package containing crystal meth before several alleged smugglers were taken off the tourist boat to a police station.
Authorities said they also seized a van and a truck believed to be involved in the drug smuggling. Further investigations will be conducted to find more people who might be involved, they added.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra thanked officials for their joint efforts in the major bust and the investigation on Monday.
“The government is serious about our policies on drugs, and all agencies are ready to work with the government to achieve those goals,” she said at the Justice Ministry press conference in Bangkok.
Officials did not say where the drugs originated. The U.N. and other experts said that neighboring Myanmar is the source of most of the region’s methamphetamine and heroin.
A report from the U.N. drug agency last month said the illicit trade in methamphetamine and other dangerous drugs is growing by leaps and bounds in Southeast Asia, with a record level of seizures of 236 tons in 2024, a 24% increase over 2023.
The “Golden Triangle,” where the borders of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet, is famous for the production of opium and heroin, which flourished largely because of the remote location and lax law e... [truncated]

  • Terrorism expert looks ahead to the NATO summit
    (23 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    The Hague, Netherlands - 23 June 2025
    1. Mid of Beatrice de Graaf, historian, and terrorism, international relations and security expert
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Beatrice de Graaf, historian:
"For me, I think that the most important takeaway or hinge at this summit is not so much the uptick of the spending, but the way the European countries will be able and capable to integrate their defense industry spending because they are so rich, there's so much budget. But will they be able to translate and operationalize it? Because there's 17 different types of helicopters, there's so many different types of infrastructure for train transport etc. So that all needs to be aligned."
    3. Close of de Graaf's face
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Beatrice de Graaf, historian:
"And vis a vis Russia, Europeans in the East have always known that Russia was a threat. The first thing that Poland did was saying we have to build up our army. They have the biggest conventional after Ukraine, as a member of the EU, the biggest conventional army. They are very much aware the Baltic states, as well, they have a whole society approach and are now telling the Europeans we told you so: we told you in 2008, Georgia, we told you in 2014 and you saw what happened in 2022. But I think within the coming years, let's say six perhaps nine years, Europe could in theory be able to stand up to Russia on its own."
    5. Close of de Graaf's hands and face
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Beatrice de Graaf, historian:
"It's a complete turnaround. It's a complete turnaround. And the past 10 years the U.S. has been pressurizing the countries of Europe to sever ties with China and cut it loose and invest more in the United States and now the countries of Europe feel that they may after all turn to China again because the United States is not a reliable partner anymore. So if you invest stuff in the defense industry, if you buy new fighter jets, who says, some Europeans argue, that the United States won't install a kill switch? So if Putin then does something and the Europeans want to deploy the material, the United States could say no, not with us. So in that sense what America's been doing over the past year, past months, past weeks even has pushed the Europeans again back into the arms of China."
    7. Mid of de Graaf
    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Beatrice de Graaf, historian:
"Well, it is interesting that what I found striking over the past two days is that the leaders of Europe, the governments of Europe, have not spoken out vociferously against the United States, they have tried to put it off the agenda so they do not want to, perhaps spoil is not a good word, but they do not want to spoil the NATO summit with this. Rutte was quite aloof and didn't really want to discuss it. The leaders of Germany, Merz, but also Ursula von der Leyen, they've, voiced their support for the United States. So in that sense it's not that there has been a breach between th... [truncated]

    (23 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    The Hague - 23 June 2025
    1. Wide of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte arriving at press conference
    2. Medium of Rutte
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General:
"We meet at a truly historic moment, with significant and growing challenges to our security. As the world becomes more dangerous, allied leaders will take bold decisions to strengthen our collective defence, making NATO a stronger, fairer and a more lethal alliance. This will include a major new defence investment plan ranging the benchmark for defence investment to 5% of GDP. A concerted effort to ramp up defence industry across the Alliance, bringing not only greater security, but also more jobs. And a continued focus on support for Ukraine, a long-sighted pursuit of a just and lasting end to Russia's war of aggression. All of this. It's essential to keeping our one billion citizens safe."
    4. Wide of press conference
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General:
"It is now clear what kind of investment it will take to effectively deliver what we need. And it is critical that each ally carries their fair share of the burden. The defence investment plan that allies will agree, in The Hague introduces a new baseline, 5% of GDP, to be invested in defence. This is a quantum leap that is ambitious, historic, and fundamental to securing our future. The new defence investment plan is the key deliverable for this summit, and will be decisive when it comes to ensuring effective deterrence and defence."
    6. Wide of press conference
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General:
"My biggest fear would be Iran having a nuclear weapon. Really, let's focus on the essentials here. My biggest fear will be for Iran to own and be able to use and deploy a nuclear weapon, it would be a stranglehold on Israel, on the whole region, and other parts of the world. And that is why NATO has said Iran should not, and this is a consistent position of NATO, Iran should not have its hands on a nuclear weapon. And I would not agree that this is against the international law, what the U.S did."
    8. Rutte leaving
    STORYLINE:
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Monday that allies will agree during the NATO summit to spend 5% of their GDPs in defense investment and said that Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.
Speaking ahead of a NATO leaders' summit that will take place in The Hague from June 24-25, Rutte called this new agreement on defence spending "ambitious, historic, and fundamental."
"Allied leaders will take bold decisions to strengthen our collective defense, making NATO a stronger, fairer and a more lethal alliance. This will include a major new defence investment plan ranging the benchmark for defence investment to 5% of GDP," said Rutte.

    5. Various of woman carrying heart-shaped balloons in street
    STORYLINE:
Moscow residents on Tuesday had mixed reactions towards U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to pause military assistance to Ukraine.
"Trump is a politician who plays to the crowd," said one Muscovite, Aleksandr.
"So, he's making the next show, but what he truly wants is not what he says."
Another, Valery, said: "You know, how many times they fooled us, how many times they promised one thing, then changed to the opposite direction and how it ended up, the history showed us many times."
"We need to be super cautious," he added.
Another Muscovite, Yevgenia, however, said that "all steps towards stopping the deaths of our guys are certainly right. It should end sooner than later."
The Russian government backed the aid pause with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling reporters on Tuesday that Washington's decision could act as a spur to a peace agreement.
Trump on Monday directed a “pause” to U.S. assistance to Ukraine as he seeks to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage in negotiations to end the fight with Russia.
The move comes just days after a disastrous Oval Office meeting in which Trump and Vice President JD Vance tore into Zelenskyy for what they perceived as insufficient gratitude for the more than $180 billion U.S. has appropriated for military aid and other assistance to Kyiv since the start of Russia’s military operation on Feb. 24, 2022.
A White House official said Trump is focused on reaching a peace deal and wants Zelenskyy “committed” to that goal. The official added that the U.S. was “pausing and reviewing” its aid to "ensure that it is contributing to a solution.”
The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ... [truncated]
