    STORYLINE:
The head of U.N.'s nuclear watchdog convened an emergency meeting of the Board of Governors in Vienna on Monday.
Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, called the meeting in light of the "urgent situation" in Iran, following the U.S. strikes on three of the country's nuclear sites.
“In view of the increasingly serious situation in terms of nuclear safety and security, the Board of Governors will meet in an extraordinary session tomorrow, which I will address,” Grossi said in a statement on the official IAEA website.
Grossi has been the target of much Iranian criticism in recent days for what they describe as conflicting statements that incited Israel's initial attack.
Other key officials present at the meeting were Reza Najafi, the Iran ambassador to the U.N., and Howard Solomon, the U.S. ambassador (Chargé d’Affaires) to International Organizations in Vienna.
The U.S. strikes, confirmed by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, hit the Fordo and Natanz enrichment facilities, as well as the Isfahan nuclear site. Iran and the U.N. nuclear watchdog said there were no immediate signs of radioactive contamination around them.

Windows burst out, glass was flying everywhere. We have a one-room apartment, which means that our child sleeps with us in the bed that is right next to the window. So every bit of it (glass) is flying straight at us. We packed in a hurry, rushed towards the hallway. At the same time carbon monoxide (fills the room) and the child inhales it. This was horrific. I cannot even express the degree of it. Then we barely went downstairs with my child. Everything here was on fire. We didn’t see the neighboring building yet because everything was covered in smoke, the cars were smoldering, tires were bursting from the high temperature which was also scary.”

    Karachi, Pakistan - 22 June 2025

    2. SOUNDBITE (Urdu) Sabir Abu Maryum, Shiite scholar ++PART OVERLAID++:
“Pakistan’s people are condemning Israeli and US aggression on Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen and now Iran. We want to assure the Iranian people that Pakistani people are standing with Iran. Last night the world terrorist state United State attacked Iran which is a blatant violation of the United Nations charter and international laws. We condemn this act and support Iran’s right to defence which is being used against Israel. We hope that Iran will teach a lesson to the U..S and use its right of self-defense.”
    3. Various of protest
    STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Shiite Muslims in Karachi held a demonstration against Israel and the United States' strikes on Iran on Sunday.
Protesters held placards depicting Iran's supreme leader and chanted anti-US and anti-Israel slogans.
The United States inserted itself into Israel’s war against Iran by dropping 30,000-pound bombs on a uranium enrichment site early Sunday.
Iran lashed out at the U.S. for crossing “a very big red line” with its risky gambit to launch strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites with missiles and the bunker-buster bombs.
In Karachi, one protester, Shiite scholar Sabir Abu Maryum, condemned Israel and the U.S.' actions.
"We support Iran’s right to defence which is being used against Israel," he said.
"We hope that Iran will teach a lesson to the U.S. and use its right of self-defense.”
The U.S. decision to become directly involved comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that have moved to systematically eradicate the country’s air defenses and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities.
Israeli strikes began on June 13. Targeting Iranian military and nuclear sites, they killed several top military officials and nuclear scientists.
Iran retaliated by firing hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel, some of which penetrated the country’s vaunted multi-tiered air defense system.
The war so far has killed hundreds of people and wounded more than 1,000 in Iran and killed two dozen and wounded hundreds in Israel.

  • Analyst looks at Iran's options following US strikes on nuclear sites
    (23 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Washington, DC, USA - 22 June 2025
    ++STARTS ON SOUNDBITE++
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Aaron David Miller, Carnegie Endowment fellow:
"Well, I guess you have two kinds of wars. You have an Iranian response directly against American assets. Geography is destiny. We have 40,000 troops deployed within range of Iran short range ballistic missiles. They have thousands of those. 2500 troops in Iraq, probably less than 1000 in Syria. They're vulnerable. So, if the Iranians decide to strike frontally against American assets, there was a newswire coming across that the Iranian parliament has now voted waiting for the Supreme Leader and, by the way, we haven't heard anything from the Supreme Leader, voted to close the Straits of Hormuz. Which would be a back door, frankly, to an escalation between Iran and the United States. Because if the Iranians try to close these straits, the Americans will open it and they will come in contact with the Iranian navy and a lot more. So that's one kind of war. I would describe that, I guess, as regional war because the Houthis would become involved, pro-Iranian militias in Iraq and Syria would become involved. Iranians could pursue asymmetrical cyber terror attacks abroad against Israeli and American interests. And we'd witnessed what we had never seen before, which is a more comprehensive war involving the United States and Israel and Iran. The other, the alternative is the Iranians, the Supreme Leader decides that he can't afford to take on Israel and the US and he looks for a, I don't know, middle ground response through proxies which don't strike the US directly with an Iranian hand but still easily traced back to Tehran. And the Americans respond and maybe you get a tit for tat for a day or so, but you avoid the more comprehensive version. That seems to me, I mean, more likely if you were calculating what the ultimate objective of the Supreme Leader is, and I quote my colleague at Carnegie's Karim Sadjadpour, who says that the day after any revolution, the most extreme revolutionary becomes a conservative because preserving the revolution now becomes the prime, the organizing principle. And of all the things that Ali Khamenei must feel right now, trying to get back at Donald Trump for killing Qassem Soleimani, getting back at the Israelis, the Iranians responded last night, this morning, with 30 ballistic missiles which caused substantial damage in Israel. But the one thing he wants to avoid is any interruption in the succession process, to pass on the revolution to his successor or successors. And he has to calibrate that response very carefully. I don't think we're on the cusp of regime change or even regime destabilization, but you never know, in the event that you end up with a major conflict, what the upshot and consequences should be. So, I guess those would be the two sorts of wars that I would describe. There's also the possibility that in the ... [truncated]

    STORYLINE:
The price of oil rose and U.S. stock futures fell as global markets react to the U.S. strike against nuclear targets in Iran.
Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.4%, while Nasdaq futures fell 0.5%. Treasury yields were little changed. The modest moves indicate markets are taking the latest development in stride.
That was evident in early Asian trading.
Veteran Hong Kong investment manager Francis Lun says the effect on Asian markets from the U.S. attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities was limited. Initially, Hang Seng Index lost more than 200 points when trading started but the drop was stabilized soon after.
Investor confidence is still weak according to Lun.
Other major regional markets also logged moderate declines.
The conflict, which began with an Israeli attack against Iran on June 13, has sent oil prices yo-yoing, which has in turn caused see-saw moves for the U.S. stock market, because of rising and ebbing fears that the war could disrupt the global flow of crude. Iran is a major producer of oil and also sits on the narrow Strait of Hormuz, through which much of the world’s crude passes.
