  • Japan markets down following US strikes on Iran nuclear sites

    Tokyo - 23 June 2025
    1. Japan's benchmark stock index Nikkei 225 falling after the opening of Tokyo Stock Exchange

    3. Astris Advisory Japan KK's Managing Director Neil Newman looking at his laptop
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Neil Newman, Astris Advisory Japan KK's Managing Director:
"Well, not so much of a reaction in Japanese stocks, and I think largely that could have been because there certainly has been a risk of (war) over the last couple on months. Now, we have seen foreign money coming back in again, but I think it is just a little bit too early to decide as an investor, if you have been bringing money back into Japan, well it's time to take it out again immediately. So, I believe what we are thinking is or the thinking is that it is going to be a short conflict. The one big hit by the Americans will be affective and then we'll get back to sort of business as usual, in which case there is no need for the immediate, panicky type reaction."
    5. Energy sources industry index up for 3.48 points
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Neil Newman, Astris Advisory Japan KK's Managing Director:
"The U.S. strike on Iran certainly is very good advertisement for defense equipment. Around the region here in Asia, we do have two very large defense equipment manufacturing bases, which, of course, is Japan where there are thirty odd companies, I believe, listed which are actively involved in the defense sector. Then, of course Korea, which has built out its defense manufacturing capabilities quite substantially over the past few years and is now engaged in substantial exports. So very good for those industries."
    7. Newman taking notes
    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Neil Newman, Astris Advisory Japan KK's Managing Director:
"If it's a sustained conflict then, of course, the risk profile for all this changes because of course that would lead to higher oil prices. Obviously the whole region, the Middle East is obviously very important to oil and 20% of the world's oil flow goes through Strait of Hormuz. If there should be an embargo, are some disruptions to oil flow and the oil price does go up and stays up, then that will introduce far more inflation into the economies globally and, of course, particularly Japan because it imports so much of its energy."
    9. Tokyo Stock Exchange's logo and stock trade figures reflected on glass
    STORYLINE:
Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.6% Monday morning as global markets reacted to the U.S. strike against nuclear targets in Iran Saturday.
But one analyst in Tokyo told The Associated Press it is too early for the investors to decide whether pull out or not. There is, he said, "no need for the immediate, panicky type reaction."
Neil Newman, from Astris Advisory Japan KK, said the stock market had not been that much affected in Asia based on the thinking that it is goi... [truncated]

“So I, first and foremost, saw it as being more useful in dealing with the personnel that work for me, my supervisors, and the officers as well. And being more attuned to listening to what they're saying rather than trying to already have the answer or have it figured out, just listening to them hearing them out, being there to see their needs and see that they're fulfilled. But I also did see that that could be useful when dealing with the public as well. Because a lot of times, we go into situations and you feel like you already have handled this type of situation so many times, and that you already know what the outcome is going to be and what the person's problem is. And a lot of times, we go into it with that mentality rather than actually hearing them out.”

    STORYLINE:
A suicide bomber in Syria opened fire then detonated an explosive vest inside a Greek Orthodox church filled with people praying on Sunday, killing at least 22 and wounding 63 others, state media reported.
Security forces and first-responders rushed to the church.
Syrian Civil Defense emergency officer Hassan Al-Hassan said Monday that authorities were still working to identify the perpetrator.
The attack took place in Dweil’a on the outskirts of Damascus inside the Mar Elias Church, according to state media SANA, citing the Health Ministry for the toll of dead and wounded.
Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said there were at least 19 peopled killed and dozens wounded, but did not give exact numbers. Some local media reported that children were among the casualties.
The attack on the church was the first of its kind in Syria in years, and comes as Damascus under its de facto Islamist rule is trying to win the support of minorities.
As President Ahmad al-Sharaa struggles to exert authority across the country, there have been concerns about the presence of sleeper cells of extremist groups in the war-torn country.
No group immediately claimed responsibility Sunday.

Mahmoud Khalil is a freedom fighter. Mahmoud Khalil is a refugee. Mahmoud Khalil is a father and a husband. And above all Mahmoud Khalil is Palestinian. Mahmoud Khalil is a Palestinian who refused to remain silent while watching a genocide in Palestine. As many of you know, the board of trustees at Columbia, the shameful board of trustees at Columbia, is currently attempting to expel 15 more students and to suspend tens of others, basically stealing their future, their degrees, their labor, merely because these students are not afraid. These students are not afraid to stand for Palestine."

Because I fear that in a couple of decades we would look back at what's happening now and regret that. But it's actually taking toll on real people's lives, unfortunately."
    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Noor Abdalla, wife of pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil:
"Mahmoud was kidnapped from our home and for weeks we saw this administration try to orchestrate lies about Mahmoud, placing hurdle after hurdle to make this as difficult as possible for us. While we got some justice yesterday with Mahmoud's release, justice delayed is justice denied. And what was taken from us we will never get back. He is free now, but we are not done because this is bigger than one man, one family, or one moment. Mahmoud's release is a victory, but it's not justice. Justice is accountability. Justice is no more families ripped apart. Justice is a system that listens to truth."

“The East Coast weather, at least from my perspective, is just very sweaty in the summer. It's just like my dog doesn't even want to be outside. My dog loves being outside. But it's that — like walking through a swamp kind of feeling.”

    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Vak Kobiashvili, Rehoboth Beach visitor from Maryland:
“I think the beach would be busy today because it's the nicest weather it's going to be for a while. It's only going to get worse. And at this point, living in this part of the East Coast, you know when it's that kind of unfortunate humidity that it's unpleasant to be outside. And now that it's just starting to be hotter and hotter, people are trying to get out to the beach before it's too hot to really even manage being outside.”

    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Ivke Enwerem, Rehoboth Beach visitor from Delaware:
“It's summertime. I wish it was a little more sunny. It doesn't truly feel like summer. I kind of wish it did.”

    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Ivke Enwerem, Rehoboth Beach visitor from Delaware:
“Summer on the East Coast can be a little inconsistent a lot of times. Like, it can be — like literally yesterday, not yesterday, the other day — it was like raining for like five minutes and then just stopped. It was like downpour. There was thunder storms everywhere and then it just stopped eventually.”

“I know in Massachusetts it's been horrible. Lots of rain for like 14 weeks. Rain every Saturday.

“My thoughts on the heat warnings are you know you got to be careful. You can't... you got to stay hydrated and just don't stand in the sun for too long if there's any sun you had."

    STORYLINE:
Tens of millions of people across the Midwest and East endured dangerously hot temperatures again on Sunday as a rare June heat wave that gripped much of the U.S. was expected to last well into the coming week.
Most of the northeastern quadrant of the country from Minnesota to Maine was under some type of heat advisory. So were parts of Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi, the National Weather Service said.
Weather service offices throughout the region warned of sweltering and sometimes life-threatening conditions through Wednesday.
“Please plan ahead to take frequent breaks if you must be outside, stay hydrated and provide plenty of water and shade for any outdoor animals,” the service office in Wakefield, Virginia, said on X.
