  • Analyst on Iran's nuclear facilities following US bombardment of three sites
    (22 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ++EDIT BEGINS AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITES++
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    London, UK - 22 June 2025
    ++VIDEO CALL++
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Darya Dolzikova, Senior Research Fellow in Proliferation and Nuclear Policy at the Royal United Services Institute, London:
    "With regard to Fordo, in particular, we know that the facility was attacked with what we call bunker busters, massive ordnance penetrators of very large munitions that were carried by American planes. Again, the extent of the damage not entirely clear. The facility is or has been a critical one for Iran, for Iran's nuclear program because it's, well, it's deeply buried. It's an important enrichment facility. That's where Iran has been enriching to 60% enriched uranium, which is not quite weapons grade, but it's getting close. They were doing it there with 20% feed, which allows for more efficient enrichment. So again, hard to say what the extent of the damage is. Folks have seen the satellite images of what looked to be the impact points, but that doesn't tell us much in terms of what's actually happening inside the facility. We don't know the layout of the facility, we don't know what damage has actually been caused by the impact, let alone any secondary implications or damage to the facility.”
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Darya Dolzikova, Senior Research Fellow in Proliferation and Nuclear Policy at the Royal United Services Institute, London:
    “The Iranian nuclear program, as you say, has been under IAEA safeguards. Iran has a comprehensive safeguard agreement with the Agency, which has allowed the Agency to monitor the production of fissile material inside of Iran. Now, over the last few years, Iran has decreased the amount of access that it has given to the Agency, so even before the strikes over the last week, we had, or the Agency rather, had less access to the program than it had had in, in previous years, access was being decreased, but yeah, the access was still there. The Agency had a fairly good sense of where the material was, how much of it there was and what form it was in. My concern, I think the concern of a lot of non-proliferation analysts is that with in light of the last week, that the lesson that the Iranians will take is that less transparency rather than more transparency is the way to go on its program, that it further decreases access, IAEA access, to its facilities. So, it might further restrict access to Agency inspectors. However the kind of the big concern is that Iran might pull out of the non-proliferation treaty altogether. And then we lose most likely all access and all visibility of the program.”
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Darya Dolzikova, Senior Research Fellow in Proliferation and Nuclear Policy at the Royal United Services Institute, London:
    “I think the important thing to keep in mind, is that it's possible to degrade the program to varying degrees, depending on how many strikes the Americans... [truncated]

    Amid fears of a wider regional conflict, the Trump administration sent a clear message that it wanted to restart diplomatic talks with Iran.

  • B-2 bombers return to US base
    (22 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Knob Noster, Missouri - 22 June 2025
    1. B-2 "Spirit" Bombers flying around Whiteman Air Force Base in the distance
    2. Various of Bombers landing
    3. Various of Bomber flying in distance
    4. Various of bombers flying overhead
    STORYLINE:
    The stealth bombers that dropped massive bunker-buster bombs on Iranian nuclear facilities have begun returning to a U.S. base in Missouri.
    An Associated Press journalist watched on a clear but windy Sunday afternoon as at least seven of the B-2 Spirit bombers came in for landing at Whiteman Air Force Base.
    A first group of four of the stealth aircraft did a loop around the base before approaching a runway from the north. A final group of three arrived within 10 minutes.
    U.S. officials have said that one B-2 group headed west from the Missouri base on Saturday, intended as a decoy to throw off Iranians. Another flight of seven quietly flew off eastward, ultimately engaging in the Iran mission.
    The U.S. military struck three sites in Iran Saturday evening, inserting itself into Israel’s effort to destroy Iran's nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe.
    The decision to directly involve the U.S. comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that have moved to systematically eradicate the country’s air defenses and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities.
    But U.S. and Israeli officials have said that American stealth bombers and a 30,000-pound (13,600-kilogram) bunker buster bomb they alone can carry offered the best chance of destroying heavily fortified sites connected to the Iranian nuclear program buried deep underground.

    STORYLINE:
    A suicide bomber in Syria on Sunday detonated himself inside a church filled with people, killing at least nine, Syrian state media reported.
    The explosion in Dweil’a in the outskirts of Damascus took place as people were praying inside the Mar Elias Church.
    SANA, citing the Health Ministry said that at least 15 others were wounded.
    Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says there were 30 people wounded and killed, but did not give exact numbers.
    Some local media reported that children were among the casualties.
    The attack was the first of its kind in Syria in years, and comes as Damascus under its de facto Islamist rule is trying to win the support of minorities.
    As President Ahmad al-Sharaa struggles to exert authority across the country, there have been concerns about the presence of sleeper cells of extremist groups in the war-torn country.
    No group immediately claimed responsibility Sunday, but the Syrian Interior Ministry said an extremist from the Islamic State group entered the church, fired at the people there before detonating himself with an explosives vest, echoing some witness testimonies.
    Syrian Information Minister Hamza Mostafa condemned the attack, calling it a terrorist attack.

    Ferishteh Husseini said many residents had left Tehran, following a warning from Israel for citizens to evacuate the city. "Tehran is empty, there is no one," she said shortly after crossing into Turkey.

    The United States inserted itself into Israel’s war against Iran early Sunday by dropping 30,000-pound bombs on an uranium enrichment site buried under a mountain, a risky gambit that aimed to destroy the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program after months of failed diplomacy.
    The attack prompted fears of a wider regional conflict as Iran lashed out at the U.S. for crossing “a very big red line.”

    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mira Goshen, Tel Aviv resident:
    “The mamad (reinforced safe room) was shaking like a leaf, and I thought it was the end of the world, but touch wood that we were there (at the safe room), otherwise, I can imagine like the cage (her bird's cage that was destroyed), it could happen to me.”
    3. Various of damage to building in Tel Aviv, emergency workers, police at scene
    STORYLINE:
    Hours after the U.S. struck three nuclear sites in Iran, Iran launched more than 40 missiles towards Israel on Sunday morning, injuring 23 people and destroying apartment buildings and homes in three cities across Israel.
    Iranian missiles damaged the homes of hundreds of people in Tel Aviv on Sunday morning, the city deputy mayor Haim Goren said.
    Residents sat with their pets and suitcases stuffed with belongings outside the buildings.
    Strikes have displaced more than 9,000 people from their homes, according to a military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.
    Missiles have damaged 240 residential buildings, including more than 2,000 individual apartments.
    Mira Goshen, 79, said her entire apartment in Tel Aviv was destroyed.
    “The mamad was shaking like a leaf, and I thought it was the end of the world,” Goshen said, referring to the reinforced safe rooms that are required in all new buildings.
    She said the fact that they were inside the shelter saved their lives. The reinforced rooms stood intact amidst rubble of entire homes that were flattened.
    Goshen’s pet bird, Chica, was in her cage on the balcony during the siren, fell 11 floors but was rescued by emergency workers after escaping the destroyed cage.
    Hours after the impact, Chica was still snuggled into Goshen’s neck as Goshen wandered around next to her building, where municipality workers had set up a temporary situation room to assist people, handing out sandwiches and water.
    Multiple businesses on a nearby street had their windows blown out, with piles of glass surrounding children’s clothes and books. Workers were quickly installing temporary protection and trying to salvage any non-damaged goods.

  • Simon Cracker designers call latest Milan collection a "Big Evolution" for the label.

    Biraghi: "There is a big evolution this time first of all because we are hosted in prestigious location. And we decided in this collection to make garments that even though they are upcycled, as we always do, but in a way that they can be reproduced, remaining one of a kind but with a lot of styles. It's like a recipe book that we wrote this time in deciding to give this opportunity. The collection is based on details. So we decided to go for a more quiet color pallet which is between white and black with all the shades in between and we decided to focus on a kind of uniform we created made by a pair of tailored shorts and a squared t-shirt. And one garment on each model, so there is basically no styling. And we decided to focus on garments to being the attention back on garments."

  • Former US envoy says it's the 'moment to capitalize' and push for political settlement in Iran
    (22 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ++START AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Washington, U.S. - 22 June 2025
    ++VIA ZOOM++
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Ambassador Barbara Leaf, the Assistant Secretary of State for Near-Eastern Affairs under President Joe Biden:
    “Now, with regard to the U.S. entering the fray, what we heard this morning very clearly from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Caine, but especially from Secretary Defense, to a direct question, 'does this take us to regime change?' He was crystal clear that he and the U.S. Military were given a very precise and focused mission which was to go after and to devastate or destroy. He used a number of different verbs, the Iranian nuclear program. And that the limitations of this mission had been clearly conveyed publicly and privately to the Iranians. Nonetheless, of course, there is room for escalation.”
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Ambassador Barbara Leaf, the Assistant Secretary of State for Near-Eastern Affairs under President Joe Biden:
    “There must always be room for diplomatic effort, to take the conflict to a close, to an off-ramp. So, we heard Hegseth refer explicitly to public and private channels. I believe those channels have been ongoing throughout the nine days of this conflict. The question is, where does the U.S. intend to take these negotiations? At the outset of, in the two months of diplomatic effort led by Steve Witkoff, the president himself seemed to change the goalposts periodically, ultimately settling on the complete end of enrichment on Iranian soil, and that has been a red line for the Iranians. So, if the U.S. has largely obliterated, as Hex has said, the ability of the Iranian regime to enrich, is that a starting point since there's nothing to negotiate about in terms of those previous facilities. Very unclear.”
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Ambassador Barbara Leaf, the Assistant Secretary of State for Near-Eastern Affairs under President Joe Biden:
