  • Iran's foreign minister says diplomacy not an option at the moment after US attack
    (22 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Istanbul, Turkey - 22 June 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Abbas Araghchi, Iranian Foreign Minister:
"Of course, the door for diplomacy should be always kept open. But this is not the case right now. My country has been under attack, under aggression, and we have to respond based on our legitimate right of self-defense. And we will do that as long as needed and necessary."

    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Abbas Araghchi, Iranian Foreign Minister:
"Iran and he's a committed member of NPT (non-proliferation treaty). But NPT is not able to protect us. So why a country like Iran or other countries who are interested to have a peaceful nuclear energy should rely on NPT for their peaceful activities."

    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Abbas Araghchi, Iranian Foreign Minister:
"Well I'm going to Moscow this afternoon and I have a meeting with President Putin tomorrow morning. Russia is a friend of Iran. And we enjoy strategic partnership. And we always consult with each other and coordinate our positions."

    STORYLINE:
Iran's foreign minister says diplomacy is not an option after a U.S. strike on its nuclear facilities.
Abbas Araghchi spoke in Istanbul to journalists Sunday.
He said while the "door to diplomacy" should always be open, "this is not the case right now."
The United States stepped into Israel’s war against Iran early Sunday by dropping a 30,000 pound bomb on an uranium enrichment site buried under a mountain, a risky gambit that aimed to destroy the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program after months of failed diplomacy.
The attack prompted fears of a wider regional conflict as Iran lashed out at the U.S. for crossing “a very big red line.”
The U.S. also fired dozens of missiles from submarines — launched without congressional approval — and President Donald Trump said in a televised address from the White House that the combination of strikes “completely and fully obliterated” three nuclear sites.
Hours later, Araghchi said the time for diplomacy had passed and that his country had the right to defend itself.
Iran is a close ally of Russia, and has actively supported it in its war on Ukraine, supplying it with attack drones.
Araghchi said he would be flying immediately to Moscow to meet with President Vladimir Putin "and coordinate our positions.”
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran confirmed that attacks took place on the Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz sites, but it insisted that its nuclear program will not be stopped.
Both Iran and the U.N. nuclear watchdog said there were no immediate signs of radioactive contamination around the three locations following the strikes.

    STORYLINE:
Iranian missiles caused damaged to buildings in central Israel Sunday after the U.S. carried out strikes on Iran overnight.
In Ness Ziona, a rescue worker described helping injured people in shock after missiles caused buildings to collapse.
"This is an example of the resilience of the civilians in Israel," said Dr. Michael Alba from the medical civilian response team.
Shortly after the Iranian missile barrage, Israel announced its warplanes were conducting strikes on “military targets” in western Iran, without immediately elaborating.
The U.S. military struck three sites in Iran early Sunday, inserting itself into Israel’s effort to destroy Iran's nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe amid Tehran’s threat of reprisals that could spark a wider regional conflict.
The decision to directly involve the U.S. comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that have moved to systematically eradicate the country’s air defenses and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities.
Israeli strikes began on June 13. Targeting Iranian military and nuclear sites, they killed several top military officials and nuclear scientists.
Iran retaliated by firing hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel, some of which penetrated the country’s vaunted multi-tiered air defense system.
The war so far has killed hundreds of people and wounded more than 1,000 in Iran and killed two dozen and wounded hundreds in Israel.

    STORYLINE:
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday said the US is "fully responsible" for the consequences of its strikes on Iran.
“The warmongering, a lawless administration in Washington is solely and fully responsible for the dangerous consequences and far reaching implications of its act of aggression,” Araghchi said in a news briefing at a conference in Turkey.
The US military hit three sites in Iran and inserted itself into Israel’s effort to destroy Iran’s nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe.
US and Israeli officials have said that American stealth bombers and a 30,000-pound bunker buster bomb they alone can carry offered the best chance of destroying heavily fortified sites connected to the Iranian nuclear program buried deep underground.
Araghchi said that the strikes overnight have blown up any possibility of diplomacy with the Americans or Europeans.
He said that there is “no red line” that the US has not crossed in its recent actions against the Islamic Republic.
“And the last one and the most dangerous one was what happened only last night when they crossed a very big red line by attacking nuclear facilities only,” he said.

Protesters gathered in the Philippine capital, Manila, on Sunday to voice their objection to U.S. strikes on Iran.
The U.S. military struck three sites in Iran earlier in the day, inserting itself into Israel’s effort to destroy Iran’s nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe amid Tehran’s threat of reprisals that could spark a wider regional conflict.
The decision to directly involve the U.S. comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that have moved to systematically eradicate the country’s air defenses and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities.

President Donald Trump announced the strikes. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported that the attacks targeted the country’s Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz nuclear sites. The agency did not elaborate. Iran’s foreign minister said Iran reserves the right to retaliate.

Silence in the face of such blatant aggression will plunge the world into an unprecedented level of danger and chaos. Humanity has come too far as a species to allow a lawless bully to take us back to the law of the jungle. The Islamic Republic of Iran calls on the Security Council to convene an emergency session to unequivocally condemn the criminal act of aggression by the United States against Iran, and to hold the administration in Washington accountable for its violations of fundamental principles of United Nations Charter and of norms of international law."

The US military attack on the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of a UN member state carried out with genocidal Israeli regime, carried out in collusion with the genocidal Israeli regime, has once again revealed the extent of the United States hostility towards the peace-seeking people of Iran, who will never compromise over the independence and sovereignty. The US act of aggression against Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities constitutes not only a flagrant breach of the UN Charter, especially the prohibition of the use of force under Article Two, paragraph four, and the obligation to respect the states territorial integrity and sovereignty, but also in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231. 8. Wide of station in Tokyo, bullet train passing by
    STORYLINE:
People in Tokyo expressed their concerns, following the news that the U.S. military struck three sites in Iran early Sunday.

Irish tourist Niell O'Connor was spending his last day in Tokyo while traveling with his wife.
He saw the news alert on his phone, and told the AP "this is not good news."
The United States attacked three sites in Iran early Sunday, inserting itself into Israel’s war aimed at destroying the country’s nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe that prompted fears of a wider regional conflict.
U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that Iran’s key nuclear sites were "completely and fully obliterated" in an address to the nation from the White House. There was no independent damage assessment.
