  • Husband rearrested in the death of Suzanne Morphew, whose remains were found after 3-year search
    (21 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ++SOUNDBITE SEPARATED BY BLACK FRAMES++
    ++EDIT BEGINS AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    Alamosa, Colorado - 20 June 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Kelly, District Attorney:
    "I scheduled this briefing to provide an update on the investigation that has been in the hearts and minds of the people of Chaffee County since Mother's Day of 2020. Suzanne Morphew was reported missing on Mother's Day five years ago. Law enforcement has never stopped working to obtain justice for this mother of two. This daughter, this sister, and this beloved member of the Chaffee County community."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Kelly, District Attorney:
    "Through the tireless efforts of the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office, the Swatch County Sheriff's Office, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I can announce today that the 12th Judicial District Grand Jury returned an indictment. The grand jury has indicted Barry Morphew on the single count of murder in the first degree. Law enforcement, the Chaffee County community and Colorado as a whole has never stopped fighting for justice for Suzanne. Cold case homicides are tremendously difficult. They're difficult for the families of the victims and the communities who wait patiently for answers."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Kelly, District Attorney:
    "Mr. Morphew will be held by Arizona authorities pending extradition proceedings in that state. And upon conclusion of those proceedings, Mr. Morphew will be transported to Alamosa County to stand trial on the indictment. This indictment has been unsealed. Upon the arrest of Mr. Morphew."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Kelly, District Attorney:
    "And the question is, what would be the difference between the prosecution of this case, and other prosecutions? You know, justice for cold case homicide victims remains a priority in the state of Colorado, both for prosecutors and for law enforcement. And that's despite any challenges that we may have had in the history of of any particular case that remains a priority for us. And so we have worked very hard to move forward in the case. This case is a different case, and I would refer you back to back to the indictment in this case. And we've worked very hard to move forward."
    ++EDIT ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
    The husband of Colorado woman Suzanne Morphew, whose remains were discovered over three years after she was reported missing on Mother's Day 2020, was arrested again Friday on a first-degree murder charge, authorities said.
    Barry Morphew was arrested Friday in Arizona after a Colorado grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday, three years after the initial case was dropped because of prosecutorial issues with evidence.
    His bond was set at $3 million, cash only, according to court documents. The 12th District Attorney’s office said in a statement that it is seeking to bring him back to Colorado.

    10. Wide of a Tesla parked on the roadside amid the release of Khalil in an immigration case
    STORYLINE:
    Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil was released Friday from federal immigration detention, freed after three months by a judge’s ruling after becoming a symbol of President Donald Trump’s clampdown on campus protests.
    The former Columbia University graduate student left a federal facility in Louisiana on Friday. He is expected to head to New York to reunite with his U.S. citizen wife and infant son, born while Khalil was detained.
    The Trump administration is seeking to deport him over his role in pro-Palestinian protests.
    Khalil was released after U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz said it would be “highly, highly unusual” for the government to continue detaining a legal U.S. resident who was unlikely to flee and hadn’t been accused of any violence.
    Later in the hourlong hearing, which took place by phone, the judge said the government had “clearly not met” the standards for detention.
    Khalil said Friday that no one should be detained for protesting Israel's war in Gaza. He said his time in the Jena, Louisiana, detention facility ... [truncated]

    STORYLINE:
    Before sunrise on a Saturday, Socialite Bar, a lively hangout in a township on the outskirts of Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, is already a hive of activity.
    But instead of patrons nursing hangovers, a small group gathered, eyes closed, bodies still in meditative poses on a bare floor.
    It’s an unlikely setting for a yoga class. In Zimbabwe, the practice is rare and mostly found in wealthy suburbs. Yet it is quietly taking root here in a beer tavern in Chitungwiza.
    The classes are run by Action Winya, a yoga instructor who saw how economic hardship and social pressures were damaging the mental health of people in his hometown.
    “Yoga is expensive … but we also got humans in the ghetto. They need mental wellness,” said Winya, who usually teaches in affluent areas, charging between $30 and $100 a month. That's an impossible cost for most, especially in a country where many survive through informal jobs.
    Winya now offers free weekend classes to some of those hit hardest by Zimbabwe’s economic problems.
    The sessions have become a source of relief for people navigating Zimbabwe’s relentless challenges. Authorities acknowledge a growing societal crisis worsened by drug abuse, domestic violence and poverty, compounded by a shortage of public health services and therapists.
