  • British foreign secretary says Europeans 'keen to continue ongoing discussions' with Iran after talk
    (20 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Geneva - 20 June 2025
    1. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul walking to microphone to speak to press
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Kaja Kallas, EU foreign policy chief:
"So today, today was, the discussions we had with Iran is that the regional escalation benefits no one. And that is why we need to keep the discussions with Tehran open. We agreed that we will discuss nuclear, but also broader issues that we have and keep the discussions open."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) David Lammy, British Foreign Secretary:
"Well, it was important to come from Washington DC this morning and to be here with my European colleagues and to have these discussions with Iran. We were clear, Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and the EU and Europe have been clear for many years that that cannot happen. We are keen to continue ongoing discussions and negotiations with Iran. And we urge Iran to continue their talks with the United States. This is a perilous moment and it is hugely important that we don't see regional escalation of this conflict. And indeed the issues that would cause for all of us, but also for people at home worried about cost of living at this time."
    STORYLINE:
Britain’s foreign secretary said after several hours of talks Friday between top European diplomats and their Iranian counterparts that Europe is “keen to continue ongoing discussions and negotiations with Iran.”
David Lammy said Europeans were clear in talks in Geneva that Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said "regional escalation benefits no one."
"That is why we need to keep the discussions with Tehran open. We agreed that we will discuss nuclear, but also broader issues, that we have and keep the discussions open," she added.
The ministers gave few details and took no questions.
Foreign ministers from Britain, France and Germany, as well as the European Union's foreign policy chief, emerged from talks at a Geneva hotel about 3 1/2 hours after Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived for the meeting.
Araghchi also made a brief appearance before the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva.
He said that Israel’s “attacks on nuclear facilities are grave war crimes,” and insisted that “we are entitled … and determined to defend our territorial integrity, national sovereignty and security with all force.”
Iran has long insisted its nuclear program is peaceful, though it was the only non-nuclear-armed state to enrich uranium up to 60%, a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%.

    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Margaritis Schinas, former Vice President of the European Commission:
“Despite of this historic and unprecedented crisis, we made it. Europe made it. And Greece made it as well. I’m saying this because, you know, I have always resisted the intellectual appeal of pessimism. I’m an incurable optimist. And even in these very difficult moments, I had no doubts that we would be shaken, threatened, as it happened, but in the end of the day, common sense and common action prevailed. We can discuss a bit later, but I think the Lesbos crisis of 2015 was in a way the birth certificate of the European migration and asylum policy.”

    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Margaritis Schinas, former Vice President of the European Commission:
“We now have either a partnership agreements, or, de-facto agreements, with practically all countries of origin and transit into Europe. Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, Western Africa. So, for the first time these countries understand that they have a lot to gain by working with us then working against us on migration. That’s also something that we didn’t have in 2015 or before. More positivity: Frontex is no longer a secretariat in Warsaw working the phone to find equipment and means and people. Now this is the biggest EU agency with 10,000 border coast guards by 2017, their own equipment, their own uniforms, they are carrying guns. They have helicopters. It’s the embryo of the EU federal coast guard, as they have in the U.S. So, I’m saying all this to make the point that they are turning the page. But I also see the point that for many Europeans and many observers like yourself, who have seen, witnessed Europe’s inability to sort migration out, this toxicity persists, to a certain extent."

“What was striking was the extraordinary solidarity of the people who were rescuing these individuals. At sea, the fishermen, on the islands, the old grandmothers that we remember feeding the children, it was extraordinary. And also the hundreds of young Europeans coming from all over Europe to support these Syrians, and these Greeks, hosting these large populations. So, it was, ... [truncated]

    STORYLINE:
Demonstrators in Tehran protested Israel's strikes on Iran Friday, chanting anti-America and anti-Israel slogans while holding pictures of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The protest started after Friday prayers and worshippers were joined by other demonstrators.
"Compromises never reached any result, and they won't in future," said one Tehran resident who attended the protest.
Meanwhile, new diplomatic efforts appeared to be underway as Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi headed to Geneva for meetings with the European Union’s top diplomat and counterparts from the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
The war between Israel and Iran erupted June 13, with Israeli airstrikes targeting nuclear and military sites, top generals and nuclear scientists.
At least 657 people, including 263 civilians, have been killed in Iran and more than 2,000 wounded, according to a Washington-based Iranian human rights group.
Iran has retaliated by firing 450 missiles and 1,000 drones at Israel, according to Israeli army estimates.
Most have been shot down by Israel’s multitiered air defenses, but at least 24 people in Israel have been killed and hundreds wounded.

Do you know whom you’re fighting? Do you know whom you’re speaking to? He is the Supreme Leader. He is the master of the nation."
    9. Various of protest
    STORYLINE:
Hundreds of supporters of the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah gathered in Beirut's southern suburbs after Friday afternoon prayers to demonstrate in support of Tehran in the ongoing Israel-Iran war.
Demonstrators carried the Iranian, Lebanese and Palestinian flags as well as that of Hezbollah, and chanted "death to America" and "death to Israel."
Some also chanted pledges of allegiance to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is revered as religious authority by many Shiite Muslims.
Hezbollah suffered severe losses in a war with Israel that ended with a US-brokered ceasefire in November and has so far remained on the sidelines the Iran-Israel war.
It remains unclear whether the group might enter the fray if the government in Tehran appears to be in danger of falling.
Zainab Reda, one of the protesters, carrying a white shroud, said:
“Trump, these are our shrouds. If there is any attack on the Supreme Leader, we are ready for martyrdom."

  • Iran’s foreign minister holds talks with top European diplomats in Geneva

    2. Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas arriving at the Intercontinental hotel in Geneva
    3. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot arriving at the Intercontinental hotel in Geneva
    4. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy arriving at the Intercontinental hotel in Geneva
    5. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arriving at the Intercontinental hotel in Geneva
    STORYLINE:
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived at a hotel in Geneva Friday for a meeting with his counterparts from France, Germany, the U.K. and the European Union’s foreign policy chief.
Araghchi is holding talks with the top European diplomats about the crisis that centers on concerns about his country’s nuclear program, a week after the long-simmering dispute erupted into war between Israel and Iran.
It is the first face-to-face meeting between Western and Iranian officials since the start of the conflict.
Ahead of the meeting, Araghchi said his country has “nothing to discuss” with the United States as long as Israel continues its strikes on Iran, but is open to “dialogue” with others, though not negotiations. The war has seen Israeli airstrikes target Iranian nuclear and military sites and Tehran firing back.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said that “a window now exists within the next two weeks to achieve a diplomatic solution.” He travelled to Geneva after meeting in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump’s Mideast envoy, Steve Witkoff.
Trump has been weighing whether to attack Iran by striking its well-defended Fordo uranium enrichment facility, which is buried under a mountain and widely considered to be out of reach of all but America’s “bunker-buster” bombs. He said Wednesday that he’ll decide within two weeks whether the U.S. military will get directly involved in the war given the “substantial chance” for renewed negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the European diplomats would make a “comprehensive, diplomatic and technical offer of negotiation” to Iran.

    STORYLINE:

Hundreds of supporters of the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah gathered in the southern suburbs of Lebanon's capital, Beirut, after Friday prayers to demonstrate in support of Tehran in the ongoing Israel-Iran war.
