  • China calls freedom of navigation pretext to undermine its sovereignty after UK warship's transit
    (20 Jun 2025)

    Beijing, China - 20 June 2025
    1. Wide of news conference
    2. Wide of reporters
    3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Guo Jiakun, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The Taiwan question concerns China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. China respects the navigation rights of all countries in relevant waters of the Taiwan Strait in accordance with the law, but firmly opposes any country using so-called freedom of navigation as a pretext to provoke and threaten China’s sovereignty and security.”
    4. Mid of reporters
    5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Guo Jiakun, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“We hope the EU will honor its commitment to open markets and WTO rules, provide a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises, and promote the sound and stable development of China-EU economic and trade relations. China will firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.”

    7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Guo Jiakun, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“China always required Chinese citizens overseas to abide by local laws and regulations and not engage in any form of illegal or criminal activity.”
    8. Various of news conference
    STORYLINE:
China on Friday reiterated its opposition to what it called the misuse of “freedom of navigation” as a pretext to undermine its sovereignty and security, following the transit of a British warship through the Taiwan Strait.
On Thursday, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs “confirmed and welcomed” the transit of the British Royal Navy’s off-shore patrol craft HMS Spey through the Taiwan Strait a day earlier.
The ministry described the ship's transit as recognition of the strait’s status as “international waters.”
China then sent 74 warplanes toward Taiwan between late Thursday and early Friday.
Asked about the operation at a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun did not clarify whether the large number of Chinese warplanes sent on Thursday and Friday were related to the earlier sailing of the British warship.
The bustling Taiwan Strait lies in international waters, but China objects to any transit or activity within it by foreign military vessels.
China considers Taiwan its own territory and uses such deployments to advertise its threat to encircle and possibly invade the self-governing island.
Separately, Guo called on the European Union to ensure a “fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory” environment for Chinese businesses after the European Commission proposed barring Chinese firms from participating in public tenders for medical devices worth €60 billion or more.
The proposal followed an investigation that found 87% of China’s public procurement processes in the sector were discriminatory against European companies.

    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Keke Palmer, actor/singer/host – on why she decided to give her perspective on her past relationship drama with ex Darius Jackson:
“I feel like I had to because that's what artistry is. It's about, or I should say mine, is about transmutation. It’s about bringing closure or kind of like closing the loop on things. So, to like go around it is not really me. Like I can't go around it. I didn't know how to go through it, so it now challenged me not just professionally but personally. But I have to address something that I would never address, especially nothing on an intimate level – that's just so not me. And so, yeah, but I knew that I had to because now that it's become public, it's becoming a part of my work and I have to respond to it as such. And that just caused me to have to grow.”
