    STORYLINE:
Israel’s main international airport remained closed for departures and arrivals as its military and Iran are trading strikes.

Mahla Finkelman, a Canadian woman who arrived in Israel on June 9th still cannot fly back because her flight was canceled.
"Hopefully, potentially at the earliest, Sunday or Monday of next week, unless the skies are not open, in which case we might be here longer."

  • Sunflower sea star spawning hopes to turn the tide for ocean recovery

    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    San Francisco - 11 June 2025
    1. Various sunflower sea stars living in California Academy of Sciences aquarium tank with Giant Octopus
    +++SOUNDBITE PARTIALLY COVERED+++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Jessica Witherly, Senior Biologist, California Academy of Sciences:
"The sunflower starfish is actually incredibly important. They were recently listed as critically endangered along the California coast by the ICUN list. That means that there's barely any that you would find in the California Coast where you used to find them all over the place. So whenever you go out to a beach tide pooling, you'd be almost stepping on them. And now you can't find them anywhere. California has beautiful kelp forests that are habitat to thousands of different animals. And that habitat is being destroyed right now by overpopulation of purple urchins. Those purple urchins normally would get eaten by pycnopodia or sunflower starfish as they eat other echinoderms or starfish and urchins. But because of their decline after the sea star wasting disease multiple years ago, the purple urchin's population has mass produced and is decimating our kelp forest, destroying habitat for many different species and affecting animals all up and down the California coast. So we collaborated with Alaska Sea Life Center in Seward, Alaska. We went up there where they have over 45 adult individuals and we were able to successfully spawn them. And we have, as you can see, a ton of larvae. So we are growing these up from free-floating larvae to tiny, subtle starfish to much larger juvenile starfish. But the goal here is to get good and kind of break the code about how to mass produce and breed and care for these animals in our care so that then we can reintroduce them back into the wild to see surges of their numbers along the west coast."

    STORYLINE:
In a breakthrough for marine conservation, scientists at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco are successfully spawning and raising critically endangered sunflower sea stars in captivity, an effort that could help restore the species in the wild.
Once decimated by sea star wasting disease, sunflower sea stars lost more than 90% of their population in just a decade.
But now, after years of research, biologists have learned to breed them, and are building up captive populations for future reintroduction along California’s coast.

    Central Israel - 16 June 2025
    1. Various of extensive damage to buildings in central Israel after Iranian missiles attack, emergency services at scene
    STORYLINE:
Iran launched a new wave of missile attacks on Israel early Monday, triggering air raid sirens across the country as emergency services reported projectiles striking and shrapnel falling in Israel's north and center, wounding at least 67 people.
Powerful explosions, likely from Israel’s defense systems intercepting Iranian missiles, rocked Tel Aviv shortly before dawn, ushering in a fourth day of open warfare between the regional foes.
Plumes of black smoke rose into the sky over the major coastal city.
Authorities in the central Israeli city of Petah Tikva near Tel Aviv said that Iranian missiles had hit a residential building there, charring concrete walls, blowing out windows and heavily damaging multiple apartments.
There was no immediate word on the number of casualties from that strike as rescuers searched through the ruins.
Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service said it was treating 67 wounded people evacuated from four different places hit by missile strikes. It said most of the people were in moderate or mild condition.

    1. Long shot of explosions and interceptions seen over the sky of Tel Aviv, UPSOUND sirens
    STORYLINE:
Explosions and interceptions were seen and heard in the Tel Aviv area, after missiles were launched from Iran towards Israel overnight into Monday.
For the fourth day Iran launched a new wave of missile attacks on Israel early Monday, triggering air raid sirens across the country as emergency services reported shrapnel falling in several areas in central Israel, sparking fires and wounding at least 10 people.
Israel and Iran have traded more missile attacks despite international calls for a halt to the fighting, with neither country showing signs of backing down as the conflict between the regional foes raged for a third day.
Iran on Sunday said Israel struck its oil refineries, killed the intelligence chief of its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and two other generals and hit population centers in intensive aerial attacks that raised the death toll in the country since Israel launched its major campaign on Friday to 224 people.
Israel, which has aimed its missiles at Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program and military leadership, said that that Iran has fired over 270 missiles since Friday, wreaking havoc on sleepy residential suburbs and killing 14 people.

Macron had also visited Greenland on Sunday for a highly symbolic stop on his way to Canada.
