    STORYLINE:
A memorial of flowers, candles, and handwritten notes lined the steps of the State Capitol in Minneapolis on Sunday in tribute to former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark after they were killed in a shooting at their home.
Authorities say a man posed as a police officer and fatally shot the Hortmans at their home in Brooklyn Park early Saturday.
The massive search for the suspect, whom authorities identified as 57-year-old Vance Boelter, stretched into its second day on Sunday.
The FBI offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to Boelter's arrest and conviction.
Senator John Hoffman, a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, were also shot at their home in Champlin, about nine miles (15 kilometers) away, shortly before. They remain in hospital receiving treatment.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the shooting of the state lawmakers “a politically motivated assassination.”

    4. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Daniel Pardo, member of local civil platform to promote decrease in tourism:
“We have to reduce the city’s capacity to host tourists, recover housing for regular citizens at reasonable prices, reducing hypermobility. They should forget about enlarging infrastructures at the port and the airport. It’s crazy to think about that in times of a climate emergency. We must improve working conditions for those working in the tourism sector and also promote other sectors of the economy that are more compatible with life because tourism is proving that it isn’t compatible with life in cities. It exploits and expels the citizens. And it destroys land and the planet.”

    13. Pan of large crowds at protest
    STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of red-clad protesters marched through the Dutch city of The Hague on Sunday to demand their government do more to halt Israel’s campaign in Gaza, in what organizers called the country’s biggest demonstration in two decades.
Human rights groups and aid agencies - including Amnesty International, Save the Children and Doctors Without Borders - estimated the peaceful crowd at more than 100,000 people.
The streets of The Hague were packed with old, young and even some babies on their first protest.
"I don't want to be complicit to these horrendous crimes happening there (in Gaza) and I want to speak out," said Marin Koning who took part in the demonstration.
"I want my government to speak out that this is not acceptable anymore, and I want to show this in my way," said another protester who gave only her first name, Marija.
After a 10-week blockade that barred all aid to Gaza, Israel is allowing the United Nations to deliver a trickle of food assistance and is backing a newly created U.S. aid group, which has opened several sites in the center and south of the territory to deliver food parcels.
But the aid system rolled out last month by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has been troubled by near-daily shootings as crowds make their way to aid sites, while the longstanding U.N.-run system has struggled to deliver food because of Israeli restrictions and a breakdown of law and order.
On Thursday UN member nations voted overwhelmingly to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages held by Hamas, and unrestricted access for the delivery of desperately needed food to 2 million Palestinians.

We are very tired of the situation we are in, and we are bored. 6. Close of boy waiting for aid
    STORYLINE:
A soup kitchen distributed food in a Gaza City tent camp on Saturday as Palestinians struggle to get meals amid Israel's ongoing blockade and military operation.
Palestinians across the Gaza Strip have become increasingly desperate as nearly three months of Israeli border closures have pushed the territory to the brink of famine.
The hot soup distributed on Saturday was not enough to feed everyone who came whether from inside or outside the camp as people crowded the collection point.
Hala al-Misri said she was five months pregnant and sometimes having to go without meals.
She said her pregnancy was being made more difficult by having to stand in the sun for extended periods.
Israel's military offensive in Gaza has killed over 55,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which has said women and children make up more than half of the dead but does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in count.
Hamas sparked the war when its fighters led a rampage into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251.
The war has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and displaced around 90% of its population, often multiple times.

If you wanted to carry him with your hands you would return to your children without food. Life is death. You face death in the morning, and you face it while returning, and while going, and if you do not die from the shooting, you die from the stampede."
    5. Various of people walking, some carrying aid
    STORYLINE:
Palestinians returning from an Israeli- and U.S.-supported food distribution point on Sunday said they faced difficult and dangerous situations as they queued to get aid at the site.
"It opens at 12, we come at 4 in the morning, some are martyred and injured, and you cannot carry them because you went out to get food," said Alaa Saqer as he walked back from a distribution point.
"A person dies next to you and you cannot carry him. If you wanted to carry him with your hands you would return to your children without food. Life is death. You face death in the morning, and you face it while returning, and while going, and if you do not die from the shooting, you die from the stampede," he added.
His comments come as at least eight Palestinians were killed and dozens more wounded on Sunday in a shooting near Israeli and U.S.-supported food distribution points in the Gaza Strip, according to health officials.
Witnesses blamed the Israeli military, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
There have been near-daily shootings near the sites since they opened last month.
Witnesses say Israeli forces have repeatedly fired on the crowds and health officials say scores have been killed.
The military has acknowledged firing warning shots at what it says were suspects approaching its forces.
The shooting on Sunday happened close to the sites that are operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a group that Israel and the United States hope will replace a system of aid distribution run by the United Nations, which has rejected the initiative, saying it violates humanitarian principles.
The aid system rolled out last month has been marred by chaos and violence, while the U.N. system has struggled to deliver food because of Israeli restrictions and a breakdown of law and order, despite Israel loosening a total blockade it imposed from early M... [truncated]

  • Israel and Iran trade strikes for a third day as nuclear talks are called off | AP Explains

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Jerusalem - 15 June 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Federman, The Associated Press: ++PARTLY OVERLAID WITH SHOTS 2-5++
"Israel and Iran are battling for a third consecutive day. The Israeli Air Force is pressing ahead with more air strikes on targets inside Iran. The Iranians have been responding with deadly barrages of missile fire on Israeli cities. Israel says it has inflicted some significant damage on Iran. Remember, they’ve already killed a number of top commanders and hit other military targets. Also, of course, they have been targeting these nuclear facilities across Iran for these past three days. Equally significant, the Israeli Air Force now says it has taken out most of Iran’s air defenses. It has virtual free movement over Iran’s skies. That will make it easier for the Air Force to press ahead with these air strikes. However, they have not been able to halt the missile barrages. Iran has been launching dozens of missiles—some deadly strikes overnight. Israel, of course, does have that sophisticated air defense system, but officials here say it is not 100% effective. And we saw the result of that in these deadly strikes overnight. Israel is pressing ahead. It has issued some evacuation orders inside Iran. They are striking more targets. Of course, if the missile fire does continue, that could put some pressure on Israel to scale back or to halt this operation. But we haven’t seen any signs of that happening yet. So we are looking at an open-ended operation, no sign when it might actually end."
