  • Israel and Iran trade strikes for a third day as nuclear talks are called off | AP Explains

    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Federman, The Associated Press:

    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Federman, The Associated Press:
"Israel says it has inflicted some significant damage on Iran. Remember, they’ve already killed a number of top commanders and hit other military targets. Also, of course, they have been targeting these nuclear facilities across Iran for these past three days. Equally significant, the Israeli Air Force now says it has taken out most of Iran’s air defenses. It has virtual free movement over Iran’s skies. That will make it easier for the Air Force to press ahead with these air strikes. However, they have not been able to halt the missile barrages. Iran has been launching dozens of missiles—some deadly strikes overnight. Israel, of course, does have that sophisticated air defense system, but officials here say it is not 100% effective. And we saw the result of that in these deadly strikes overnight."

    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Federman, The Associated Press:
"Israel is pressing ahead. It has issued some evacuation orders inside Iran. They are striking more targets. Of course, if the missile fire does continue, that could put some pressure on Israel to scale back or to halt this operation. But we haven’t seen any signs of that happening yet. So we are looking at an open-ended operation, no sign when it might actually end."

    1. Various of smoke rising above buildings in Tehran
    STORYLINE:
Smoke was seen rising above buildings in the Iranian capital on Sunday as Israel unleashed airstrikes across Iran for a third day.
Iran has responded by firing missiles towards Israel and Israeli officials threatened even greater force as some Iranian missiles evaded Israeli air defenses to strike buildings in the heart of the country.
Planned talks on Iran’s nuclear program, which could provide an off-ramp, were canceled.
The region braced for a protracted conflict after Israel’s surprise bombardment of Iran’s nuclear and military sites on Friday killed several top generals and nuclear scientists, and neither side showed any sign of backing down.
Iran said Israel struck two oil refineries, raising the prospect of a broader assault on Iran’s heavily sanctioned energy industry that could affect global markets.
The Israeli military, in a social media post, warned Iranians to evacuate arms factories, signaling what could be a further widening of the campaign.
Explosions shook Iran’s capital, Tehran, at around noon and again around 3:30 p.m. Semiofficial news agencies close to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard reported one strike in the area of Vali-e Asr Square downtown and another in a neighborhood named for the air force, which is headquartered there.
Sirens went off across much of Israel again around 4 p.m., warning of what would be Iran's first daytime assault since the fighting began.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.

    STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Greenland on Sunday for a state visit.
He was greeted by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen after arriving at Nuuk Airport.
Macron’s first trip to Greenland, the strategic Arctic island coveted by U.S. President Donald Trump, is aimed at shoring up Europe's political backing for Denmark and its semiautonomous territory.
Macron's visit on Sunday comes just ahead a meeting of the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations next week in Canada that will be attended by both Macron and Trump.
The French president's office said the trip to Greenland is a reminder that Paris supports principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders as enshrined in the U.N. charter.
Macron mentioned Greenland last week in his opening speech at the U.N. Ocean Conference, saying it is not “up for grabs” in remarks that appeared directed largely at Trump.

The first direct flight from the U.S. to Greenland by an American airline landed in the capital city of Nuuk Saturday evening.
The flight took place on U.S. President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday, but it was organised before Trump's re-election.
    STORYLINE:
Saturday's flight marks the first direct passage between the U.S. and the Arctic island in nearly 20 years.
In 2007, Air Greenland launched a route between Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Kangerlussuaq Airport, some 315 kilometers (195 miles) north of Nuuk.
It was scrapped the following year due to cost.
Warren Rieutort-Louis, a 38-year-old passenger from San Francisco, decided to visit Nuuk for just one night to be a part of the historic flight.
“I’ve been to Greenland before, but never this way around. I came the other way through Europe, so to be able to come straight is really amazing,” says Rieutort-Louis.
The United Airlines flight took place on U.S. President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday, which was celebrated in Washington with a controversial military parade that was part of the Army’s long-planned 250th anniversary celebration.
Trump has repeatedly said he seeks control of Greenland, a strategic Arctic island that’s a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, and has not ruled out military force.... [truncated]
