  • Search for suspect in shooting of 2 Minnesota lawmakers leads to one of his vehicles in rural area

    STORYLINE:
Authorities searched a vehicle on a rural road outside Minneapolis on Sunday that they believe had been used by the man wanted in the shootings of two Democratic lawmakers, as a state on edge struggled to make sense of the brazen political violence that left one leader dead.
Former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday. Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were injured at their Champlin home, about 9 miles (about 15 kilometers) away.
Authorities named 57-year-old Vance Boelter as a suspect, saying he wore a mask as he posed as a police officer, even allegedly altering a vehicle to make it look like a police car.
More than 24 hours after authorities first confronted him outside Hortman's home, Boelter was still on the loose after fleeing on foot.
The FBI issued a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to his arrest and conviction. They circulated a photo taken Saturday of Boelter wearing a tan cowboy hat and asked the public to report sightings.
Investigators found a cowboy hat near the vehicle and were working to determine whether it belongs to Boelter.
Law enforcement officers were searching the area, including nearby homes. The officials could not discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
The search was happening in rural Sibley County, roughly 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Minneapolis, where Boelter had a home with his wife and five children.
Residents in the area received an emergency alert about the located vehicle that warned them to lock their doors and cars.
A crowd of officers were seen congregated on a dirt road near the abandoned dark sedan believed to have been used by Boelter.
Doors on both sides of the car were splayed open, with discarded items scattered near the vehicle. Some officers broke off and walked into a wooded area off the road. The car was later towed away.
The shootings come as political leaders nationwide have been attacked, harassed and intimidated amid deep political divisions. Lawmakers said they were disturbed by the attacks as Twin Cities residents mourned.

“I think in Barcelona and many other cities in the Mediterranean area, there is a necessity to change the monoculture of tourism because it’s obviously very easy to make money out of tourism, but it has a very strong negative impact on the local population. Firstly, because there is a process of precariousness when it comes to jobs. The sector doesn’t create quality jobs. Then there is the increase in prices of rent, restaurant menus or shopping at the supermarket and in the end, we the locals, are forced to move out of our own cities.”

    10. Wide of protesters with banner as smoke rises from canister
    STORYLINE:
Protesters used water pistols against unsuspecting tourists in Barcelona on Sunday as demonstrators marched to demand a re-think of an economic model they believe is fueling a housing crunch and erasing the character of the Spanish city.
A growing number of residents are convinced that tourism has gone too far in the city of 1.7 people.
Barcelona hosted 15.5 visitors last year eager to see Antoni Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia basilica and the Las Ramblas promenade.
“I think that right now mass tourism brings poverty," said protester Miguel Medrano, who works as a hotel receptionist.
"The wages we are paid are not enough for us to live. A big chunk of prices, both of rent and consumption in general here in Barcelona, are determined by tourist demand rather than people’s economic possibilities.”
Cities across the world are struggling with how to cope with overtourism and a boom in short-term rental platforms, like Airbnb, but perhaps nowhere has surging discontent been so evident as in Barcelona, where protesters first took to firing squirt guns at tourists during a protest last summer.
Similar demonstrations against tourism are slated in several other Spanish cities on Sunday, including on the Balearic islands of Mallorca and Ibiza, as well as in the Italian postcard city of Venice, Portugal’s capital Lisbon and ... [truncated]

    STORYLINE:
Relatives of victims of the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 held a silent protest in The Hague, Netherlands on Sunday.
As in previous years, 298 chairs were laid out to represent those who were onboard the flight, with relatives placing white roses and pictures of their loved ones on the chairs.
The passengers and crew, who were killed in the downing, came from more than a dozen countries, although nearly 200 were Dutch citizens.
The event was held outside the Russian Embassy.
An international team of investigators have said it found “strong indications” that Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the supply of heavy anti-aircraft weapons to Ukrainian separatists who shot down MH17 with a Russian missile.
Russia has always denied any involvement in the downing of the flight over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, and refused to cooperate with the investigation.
Eleven years on relatives of those killed in the downing say they are still waiting for answers about what happened to their loved ones.
"The world moves on and things happen and new wars start and everybody seems to forget about what happened to us and we still don't have justice," said Silene Fredriksz-Hoogzand, who lost her son, Bryce.
Sander van Luik, who lost his brother, Klaas Willem, said seeing pictures of the Air India crash brought back traumatic memories, but that he hoped relatives of the victims would find out how and why their loved ones died.
