    STORYLINE:
    Jurors in the second murder trial of Karen Read have begun deliberating after weeks of testimony.
    The highly divisive case has hinged on the prosecution's theory of jaded love turned deadly. That is countered by a defense claim that a cast of tight-knit Boston area law enforcement killed a fellow police officer.
    Jurors began deliberating Friday and did not reach a verdict.
    Read told the media when she was leaving the court in the evening that she believed her team had done everything that they can.
    Jurors will be back Monday.
    Read is accused of fatally striking her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, with her SUV and leaving him to die in the snow outside a house party where other local police and a federal agent were closing out a night of drinking in 2022.

    "I can tell you that we do have a number of injured, but I can't go into detail of the exact number or the exact location, as I said. What I can also tell you, though, is that the Israel Police bomb disposal units are here on this site and multiple other sites. They're some of the best in the world. We're doing everything possible to ensure the safety of the public. We just ask for the public's cooperation. Do your part. Your responsibility can save your life and other lives as well."
    6. Damaged building, rescuers
    STORYLINE:
    15 people were reportedly trapped inside a collapsed building late Friday in the Tel Aviv satellite of Ramat Gan as projectiles launched from Iran rained on central Israel throughout the day.
    The wail of air raid sirens and the rumble of explosions could be heard throughout Israel on Friday night, and Associated Press journalists documented explosions as Iranian rockets hit Tel Aviv, the commercial hub of Israel.
    Hours earlier and again Friday evening, Israel launched strikes across Iran that targeted its nuclear program and military sites, killing several top military officers and raising the prospect of an all-out war between the two bitter Middle East adversaries. It appeared to be the most significant attack Iran has faced since its 1980s war with Iraq.
    As the Iranian rockets descended on Israel, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed not to let Israel “escape safely from this great crime.”
    The strikes came amid simmering tensions over Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program. For years, Israel had threatened such a strike and successive American administrations had sought to prevent it, fearing it would ignite a wider conflict across the Middle East and possibly be ineffective at destroying Iran’s dispersed and hardened nuclear program.

    (13 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS

    STORYLINE:
    Ananda Lewis, the former MTV and BET host who became a beloved television personality in the 1990s with her warmth and authenticity, has died. She was 52.
    Her sister, Lakshmi Emory, confirmed Lewis' death in a Facebook post Wednesday. Lewis had been battling breast cancer.
    “She’s free, and in His heavenly arms,” Emory wrote. “Lord, rest her soul.”
    Lewis, a San Diego native, made a name for herself as a host on BET's “Teen Summit,” which tackled issues facing Black youth and featured community leaders, entertainers and politicians. She landed big interviews with Kobe Bryant, Tupac Shakur and Louis Farrakhan and then-first lady Hillary Clinton, which earned her an NAACP Image Award.
    After a few seasons, Lewis took her talents over to MTV in 1997. She was a host and veejay on “MTV Live.” “Hot Zone” and “Total Request Live," a daily top 10 video countdown show.
    In 2001, Lewis told the AP that she wasn't trying to reinvent daytime talk with a new syndicated series, “The Ananda Lewis Show.”
    “I think there’s a formula, and some cases have proven that formula works. So the objective isn’t to reinvent the wheel but to make it spin a little more smoothly.”
    Lewis' show lasted only one season. But a few years later, she became a correspondent for “The Insider,” a spinoff of "Entertainment Tonight."
    Lewis was open about her cancer journey since she publicly shared her diagnosis in 2020. At that time, the disease was initially stage 3 before it advanced to stage 4 last year. She had been living with breast cancer for six years.
    Lewis said doctors recommended a double mastectomy, but she opted for alternative methods. She eventually realized that was the wrong measure, becoming an advocate for being up-to-date with mammogram checkups.
    “I need you to share this with the women in your life who may be as stubborn as I was about mammograms, and I need you to tell them that they have to do it,” Lewis said in her announcement. “Early detection, especially for breast cancer, changes your outcome. It can save their life.”

  • Strikes between Israel and Iran stymie chances of US-led nuclear deal
    (13 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ++SOUNDBITES SEPARATED BY BLACK FRAMES++
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Washington, DC - 13 June 2025
    ++STARTS ON A SOUNDBITE++
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Brian Katulis, Senior Fellow, Middle East Institute:
    "Israel conducted a bold but risky strike that it's called Operation Rising Lion. It is just in the early waves of what seems to be maybe a multi-week campaign. The first night involved more than 200 aircraft as well as drones that seem to be pre-positioned inside the country, targeting Iran's top military leadership, leaders in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, as well as key figures involved in Iran's nuclear program. The early assessments and it's still very early is that these attacks have exacted a high cost for Iran with minimal damage to Israel."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Brian Katulis, Senior Fellow, Middle East Institute:
    "The key thing to note is that the actors in the region, Israel, Iran, some of the Arab Gulf states, they're the ones that are driving events, not the United States. The United States is a big presence in terms of its military footprint and it's seen as a leader. But we're not driving events right now. We're responding to things and trying to keep things within certain limits, much in the same way that it did in April and October of last year, when Israel and Iran had that exchange of missiles and airstrikes against each other."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Brian Katulis, Senior Fellow, Middle East Institute:
    "President Trump came back to office in 2025, stating that he wanted to end kinetic wars. Wars like Russia's attack on Ukraine, ending the war in Gaza, and also ending and avoiding big Middle East wars. He has not succeeded in doing that. And I think this action by Israel demonstrates how unsuccessful he's been. He had hoped and put a lot of stock in diplomacy with Iran, but they weren't getting there. So in some ways, though, by not having the United States participate in this initial wave of attacks and probably stay on the sidelines, he in some ways is doing what President Obama's team had said about their engagement in parts of the Middle East. He's leading from behind, in a sense. He's letting others take the lead and we avoid the risk and the cost by and large. He's (Trump) got a different cabinet and set of leaders in his own administration right now than he did in his first term. (Vice President) JD Vance, I think, is much more skeptical, as we saw in the leaked Signal chat on the operations against the Houthis in Yemen, more skepticism about direct U.S. military involvement than ever before. So the thing to watch for is whether Iran targets the United States in the region, and if U.S. military bases in places like Iraq or Syria are hit, then I think all bets are off. And I think that draws the United States in. It does go against the grain of this so-called Make America First approach, which I call a gated community mindset. Basically, build bi... [truncated]

  • Macron says a top-level UN conference on a two-state solution for the Mideast is postponed
    (13 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Paris - 13 June 2025
    1. French President Emmanuel Macron arriving for news conference
    2. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
    “Israel has been carrying out attacks in the past few hours against Iran, its nuclear program and its missiles. France did not participate in conducting these strikes. They resumed this afternoon and are likely to continue. This is a new stage in the war unfolding in the region.”
    3. Wide of news conference
    4. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
    “I say it with the greatest clarity, the risk of this march towards nuclear weapons by Iran threatens the region, Europe and, more generally, collective political stability. We cannot live in a world where Iran possesses the atomic bomb because it is an existential threat and a threat to the security of all of us. But no one is more directly targeted than Israel, where Iran relentlessly calls for its destruction. I have often repeated that Israelis have the right, like everyone, to live free from the anguish of annihilation, the risk of attack and the threat of terrorism. We remain committed to this requirement for the security of Israel. I reaffirmed it this morning to (Israeli) Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”
    5. Mid of journalists
    6. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French president:
    “The objective is therefore a demilitarised Palestinian state recognising the existence and security of Israel, which must receive the support of an international mission of stabilisation. This is the essential prerequisite for Israel's regional integration and the establishment of its mutual recognition. If we must postpone the holding of this conference (UN conference on a two-state solution) for logistical and security reasons, as the leaders of the Palestinian Authority cannot join the United Nations, it will take place as soon as possible. And in the coming days, in conjunction with the leaders of the region and more particularly with Saudi Arabia, a date will be set. This postponement cannot call into question our determination to move towards the implementation of the two-state solution no matter the circumstances. I have stated my determination to recognise the state of Palestine. It is absolute and it is a sovereign decision.”
    7. Macron and journalists during conference
    STORYLINE:
    A top-level U.N. conference on a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians scheduled for next week has been postponed amid surging tensions in the Middle East, French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday.
    France and Saudi Arabia were due to co-chair the conference hosted by the U.N. General Assembly in New York on June 17-20, and Macron had been among leaders scheduled to attend.
    The Palestinian Authority hoped the conference would revive the long-defunct peace process.
    Macron expressed his “determination to recognize the state of Palestine” at some point, despite the postponement.
