  • Spain's Economy Minister says housing is country's number one challenge
    (10 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Madrid - 10 June 2025
    1. Spain's Economy, Commerce and Business Minister Carlos Cuerpo during interview
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Carlos Cuerpo, Spain's Economy Minister:
"The record numbers in terms of tourism also pose challenges, and we need to deal with those challenges also for our own population. What we see when looking at the outlook for tourism this year is that we might reach the 100 million. We are a 49 million inhabitants country, and that's the extent of the attractiveness of our country, but also of the challenge that we have in terms of dealing and providing for a good experience for tourists, but at the same time avoiding and overcharging our own services and our own housing market."
    3. Cuerpo during interview
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Carlos Cuerpo, Spain's Economy Minister:
"Well this is the key challenge for this term, and the government is putting all its efforts to be able to provide housing at affordable costs for our population."
    5. Cuerpo during interview
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Carlos Cuerpo, Spain's Economy Minister:
"There is no silver bullet, of course. But we are, and if I may now concentrate on this front, trying to rebuild the stock of housing with a key view of the the importance of the public supply of housing. We want to rebuild the public stock of housing, with huge investment coming, most of it from the next generation new funds from the recovery plan, but also going forward - for example last week we had a meeting, between the president, between President Sanchez and the presidents of the different regions and the main proposal that was made by the president was to increase threefold the investment, the money that can be invested in new housing supply. So this is by how much we're willing to engage into rebuilding this this public housing stock."
    7. Cuerpo during interview
    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Carlos Cuerpo, Spain's Economy Minister:
    ++REFERRING TO YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT++
"It's still high, it's above 25%, which is of course one of the main endeavours of this government to bring it down, but you have to look at where we come from. In 2018 it was above 33%. So that's how much things have improved. Of course we're not there yet , as I said, we still have a long way to go, but things are going in the in the right direction."
    9. Cuerpo during interview
    10. SOUNDBITE (English) Carlos Cuerpo, Spain's Economy Minister:
"We're still investigating the causes of the blackout. So let's this line of investigation and analysis unfold on its own, but what I can say about our bid for renewables is that it has only given us a cause for good news, in a sense so because it has proven to be a key element in terms of our competitiveness. So one key competitiveness edge in Spain is the low energy cost, this is proving essential for our firms and also for the attraction of investment."

"I think that the scope of corruption that is in this country, as well as the inequality and social situation that we have is really not good. We're very far from Europe in many ways, which I don't think is a good thing. We have to achieve change while we still can.”

    14. Pan right of demonstration
    STORYLINE:
Thousands of protesters filled a central square in Hungary's capital on Tuesday in what organizers called the beginning of a resistance movement against the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
It’s the latest sign of pushback against the long-serving leader's right-wing populist policies.
Nearly two dozen public figures including writers, actors, musicians, journalists and content creators lent their support to the demonstration in Budapest, delivering speeches to the thousands gathered beside Hungary's neo-Gothic parliament building.
Most speakers referenced what they view as the Hungarian government's increasingly anti-democratic conduct, as well as deep-seated corruption and economic inequality which is seen as profiting those with ties to Orbán's Fidesz party.
“It looks increasingly like the majority of people are fed up with the actions of this regime,” said Dénes Sallai, a musician.
The demonstration was the latest in a series of anti-government protests that erupted after Orbán's party pushed a law in March and a constitutional amendment the following month that effectively banned public LGBTQ+ events including the popular annual Budapest Pride.
That law also allowed for authorities to use facial recognition technology to identify and fine participants in prohibited assemblies.
Speakers at Tuesday's demonstration warned that a recent draft bill that would allow the government to blacklist critical media organizations and NGOs would mean the end of independent journalism and free civic engagement in Hungary.

I'm raising my son to believe that people have rights. You don't just do this and this is a waste of taxpayer dollars."

    7. Various of police and National Guard
    STORYLINE:
Marines and additional National Guard troops headed to Los Angeles on Tuesday, sent by President Donald Trump in response to four days of protests over immigration raids despite the strenuous objections of state and local leaders.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, meanwhile, filed an emergency motion in federal court to block the Trump administration from using the Guard and Marines to assist with immigration raids in Los Angeles, saying the motion was in response to an apparent change in orders that had been issued for the Guard.
Trump's deployment of roughly 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines to the country's second-largest city came despite a relative calm to Monday's and Tuesday's protests.
State officials sued Trump on Monday in an attempt to roll back the Guard deployment, saying the president had trampled on California’s sovereignty.
This appears to be the first time in decades that a state’s National Guard was activated without a request from its governor. Trump said in a social media post that the city would have been “completely obliterated” if he hadn’t sent Guard members to the city over the weekend.

    STORYLINE:
Miguel Uribe, a conservative Colombian presidential hopeful, was in a critical condition Tuesday after being shot in the head from close range during a rally over the weekend.
Uribe's wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, said that her husband was still fighting for his life.
"He is anchored to the Earth. The love of his son, the love of our daughters, the love of our family keeps him connected to this earthly dimension," Tarazona said outside the clinic where her husband is being treated.
Tarazona also said the violent situation which her family is going through is a shared experience with Colombians.
"The country is at war, just as my family, my children, and I are going through dark times, thousands of Colombians are suffering the terrible circumstances and consequences of war at this moment," she said.
Sen. Miguel Uribe Turbay was attacked in a park in the Fontibon neighborhood when armed assailants shot him from behind, according to his conservative Democratic Center party, which released a statement calling it “an unacceptable act of violence.”
Images circulating on social media showed Uribe Turbay, 39, covered in blood being held by several people. A medical report from the Santa Fe Foundation hospital said the senator was admitted in critical condition and is undergoing a “neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedure.”
Late Saturday night, after leading an extraordinary Security Council session, Colombia's first leftist president Gustavo Petro promised “complete transparency” in the investigation and to find the intellectual authors of the attack. He also promised an investigation into any failures by the senator's bodyguards.
Uribe Turbay is the son of a journalist who was kidnapped and killed in 1991 during one of the country's most violent periods. Colombia will hold a presidential election on May 31, 2026, marking the end of Petro's term. The senator announce... [truncated]

She had asked the court for a review of the prison sentence.
Tuesday's court decision means that Fernández de Kirchner will not be able to compete in September for a seat in the legislature in the country’s capital, as she had announced.

"We argued today and that also was emphasized by all the activists that their goal is to enter humanitarian aid to Gaza, to end the famine and to end a genocide in Gaza. 3. Tuma during interview
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Lubna Tuma, lawyer with legal rights group Adalah:
"We expect that they will be deported as soon as possible. Some of the activists even said in front of the tribunal that they are refusing to be deported. 7. Wide of detention facility at Givon Prison
    STORYLINE:
The lawyer for the flotilla passengers still detained in Israel said Tuesday that they are expected to be deported "as soon as possible."
Earlier, the group behind the Gaza-bound ship Freedom Flotilla Coalition said three activists, including Greta Thunberg, had been deported along with a journalist.
It said it had encouraged some to do it so they could speak freely about their experiences.
Eight other passengers refused deportation and were in detention before their case is heard by Israeli authorities.
Adalah, a legal rights group in Israel representing them, said they were expected to be brought before a court later Tuesday.
Lubna Tuma, a lawyer from legal department at Adalah, said "some of the activists even said in front of the tribunal that they are refusing to be deported."
"They want to complete the mission of entering the humanitarian aid to Gaza," she said.
Tuma said the passengers still at a detention facility of Givon Prison in central Israel refused to sign a paper saying that they entered Israel illegally.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, along with rights groups, said Israel's actions in international waters were a violation of international law.
Israel rejects that charge, saying such ships intend to breach what it argues is a lawful naval blockade of Gaza.
Israel viewed the ship as a publicity stunt, calling it the “selfie yacht” with a “meager” amount of aid that amounted to less than a truckload.

In an online statement, Zelenskyy said Moscow's forces fired over 315 drones - most of them Shaheds - and seven missiles overnight.
“Russian missile and Shahed strikes are louder than the efforts of the United States and others around the world to force Russia into peace,” Zelenskyy wrote, urging “concrete action” from the US and Europe in response to the attack.

"Once again, it becomes evident that Russia is escalating instead of negotiating. STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with acting Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof at the Chancellery in Berlin on Tuesday, where the leaders discussed a school shooting in Austria earlier in the day and recent developments in Ukraine.
Both Merz and Schoof extended their condolences following the shooting in Graz, Austria.
"We are deeply shocked by this news that young people have been so suddenly torn from life," Merz said during a joint news conference.
Earlier on Tuesday, a former student opened fire at a school in Austria’s second-biggest city, killing at least nine people and wounding several others before taking his own life, authorities said.
During the meeting, Merz also condemned Russia's latest wave of attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, accusing Moscow of committing “the most serious war crimes.”
"Russia has deliberately and ruthlessly attacked the civilian population with numerous drones and cruise missiles," he said.
