“Today is Eid al-Adha, Al-Aqsa Mosque is sad in light of the current situation, because they did not allow our people in the West Bank to enter and come to perform the religious rituals that are favourite to God, as this place is dedicated to worship, to worship God, Glory be to God Almighty, so we ask God for imminent and urgent relief for this nation and that our God changes the situation to a better situation.”

    4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Motasem Zaghloul, Jerusalem resident:
“Today is the blessed Eid al-Adha, we prayed in the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, but the joy is always incomplete without the beloved people of the West Bank and Gaza in particular. But we ask God to bring this Eid back to us and to the people of Gaza and the people of the West Bank with joy in the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, because Al-Aqsa and the holidays without the beloved ones are not joyful and no one enjoys them.”
    5. Various of Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem’s Old City
    STORYLINE:
Thousands of Muslim worshippers gathered in the Al Aqsa compound in Jerusalem early Friday to perform prayers marking Eid al-Adha, one of the biggest holidays of the Islamic calendar.
Known as the "Feast of Sacrifice," the revered observance coincides with the final rites of the annual hajj in Saudi Arabia. It's a joyous occasion, for which food is a hallmark.
Eid al-Adha commemorates the Quranic tale of Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice Ismail as an act of obedience to God.
Before he could carry out the sacrifice, God provided a ram as an offering. In the Christian and Jewish telling, Abraham is ordered to kill another son, Isaac.
Many Muslims celebrate the four-day feast by ritually slaughtering livestock and distributing the meat among family, friends and the needy.
The Eid comes as the war between Israel and Hamas rages on.
Israel’s military campaign -- over 600 days long -- has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants.
The offensive has destroyed large parts of Gaza and displaced around 90% of its population of roughly 2 million Palestinians.

    STORYLINE:
A prominent activist in Hong Kong, Joshua Wong, was charged Friday with conspiracy to commit collusion with foreign forces or external elements to endanger national security.
Wong was charged under a Beijing-imposed law that critics say has crushed Hong Kong's once-thriving pro-democracy movement.
It is the second time Wong has been charged under the sweeping national security law.
He was convicted in a separate subversion case linked to an unofficial primary election last year. He is serving a sentence of four years and eight months.
The prosecution accused Wong of conspiring with fellow activists to ask foreign countries, institutions, organizations and individuals outside of China to impose sanctions or blockades or engage in other hostile actions against the city or China.
They also said he seriously disrupted the formulation and implementation of laws and policies by the Chinese and Hong Kong governments, and that the act was likely to have serious consequences.
The prosecution didn't elaborate on the accusations in court. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
After hearing the charge at court, Wong, who wore a blue shirt and was visibly thinner, said he “understood” the charge.
The case was adjourned to August.

    STORYLINE:
Veterans were gathering Friday on the beaches of Normandy to mark the 81st anniversary of the D-Day landings — a pivotal moment of World War II that eventually led to the collapse of Adolf Hitler's regime.
Tens of thousands of onlookers are expected to attend the commemorations, which include parachute jumps, remembrance ceremonies, parades, and historical re-enactments.
Many will be there to cheer the ever-dwindling number of surviving veterans in their late 90s and older. All will remember the thousands who died.
The June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied France used the largest-ever armada of ships, troops, planes and vehicles to breach Hitler’s defenses in western Europe. A total of 4,414 Allied troops were killed on D-Day itself.
In the ensuing Battle of Normandy, 73,000 Allied forces were killed and 153,000 wounded. The battle — and especially Allied bombings of French villages and cities — killed around 20,000 French civilians.
The exact German casualties are unknown, but historians estimate between 4,000 and 9,000 men were killed, wounded or missing during the D-Day invasion alone.

    8. Various of destruction in Homs
    STORYLINE:
Yasmine al-Saleh has two occasions to celebrate this year: the Eid al-Adha holiday and her family’s return home after nine years in a notorious displacement camp in the Syrian desert.
True, the home they returned to, in the town of al-Qaryatayn in the eastern part of Syria’s Homs province, was damaged during the nearly 14 years of civil war.
Al-Saleh fears that even a small earthquake will bring it down on their heads.
Many of the surrounding buildings have collapsed.
“When I first entered my house my eyes welled up with tears. What can I say? It was a happiness that cannot be described,” al-Saleh said.

Last month, the last families left Rukban, a camp on the borders with Jordan and Iraq that once housed tens of thousands of families who lived under a crippling siege for years.
People started gathering in Rukban in 2015, fleeing Islamic State militants and airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition, Russia and the forces of then-Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Displacement camps became widespread in Syria during the war, but the situation in Rukban was particularly dire.
While the bulk of the camps sprung up in opposition-controlled areas in the country’s northwest, Rukban was hemmed in on all sides ... [truncated]

    STORYLINE:
Temporary markets selling livestock for sacrifice have sprung up across India, Indian-controlled Kashmir and Bangladesh ahead of Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice as it is known.
It’s a joyous occasion and food is a key part of the celebrations.
Devout Muslims buy and slaughter animals and share two-thirds of the meat with the poor.
Eid al-Adha is one of the biggest Islamic holidays and commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim who was willing to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command.
Muslims slaughter sheep, goats and cows as a demonstration of faith and remembrance of the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son, which was ultimately replaced by a ram.
As Eid al-Adha approaches, livestock prices have increased in New Delhi.
“Prices are on the higher side,” says cattle trader Mohammad Ali Qureshi, adding that goats which used to sell for 50,000 Indian rupees (US $580) are now selling for as much as 56,000 rupees (US $640).
The prices fluctuate from one market to another, and potential buyers are often seen negotiating for a better price.
In Indian-controlled Kashmir’s city of Srinagar, a livestock trader said that the markets were slow this year.
“The business we used to have is no longer the same, and the passion that buyers once had is also missing,” said Adnan.
In Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, cattle trader Delwar Hossain said the livestock market was slow due to the political situation.
Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on Saturday in India and Bangladesh.

It's unclear how serious Musk's threat was. But the capsule, developed with the help of government contracts, is an important part of keeping the space station running. NASA also relies heavily on SpaceX for other programs including launching science missions and, later this decade, returning astronauts to the surface of the moon.
SpaceX is the only U.S. company capable right now of transporting crews to and from the space station, using its four-person Dragon capsules.
Boeing’s Starliner capsule has flown astronauts only once; last year’s test flight went so badly that the two NASA astronauts had to hitch a ride back to Earth via SpaceX in March, more than nine months after launching last June.
Starliner remains grounded as NASA decides whether to go with another test flight with cargo, rather than a crew.
SpaceX also uses a Dragon capsule for its own privately run missions. The next one of those is due to fly next week on a trip chartered by Axiom Space, a Houston company.
Cargo versions of the Dragon capsule are also used to ferry food and other supplies to the orbiting lab.
Russia’s Soyuz capsules are the only other means of getting crews to the space station right now.
The Soyuz capsules hold three people at a time. For now, each Soyuz launch carries two Russians and one NASA astronaut, and each SpaceX launch has one Russian on board under a barter system. That way, in an emergency requiring a capsule to return, there is always someone from the U.S. and Russia on board.

    STORYLINE:
There is an unmistakable air of Peckham these days in Bosnia’s capital, Sarajevo, as the legendary yellow three-wheeled van from the BBC’s long-running sitcom “Only Fools and Horses” cruises the city streets.
The little Reliant Regal was the trademark of the stars of the series — the irresistible Trotter brothers from Peckham, a working-class neighborhood in London.
In Bosnia, a replica belongs to the Fatic brothers, local businessmen who are crazy about the show.
The Fatics are dealers in home appliances, running a successful company with dozens of employees and a huge shop on the outskirts of Sarajevo.
Building the business, however, has resembled the ups and downs of the Peckham market traders Del Boy and Rodney Trotter, they say.
“We are definitely the local version of the series,” Tarik Fatic, the younger of the brothers, told The Associated Press.
The enormously popular BBC sitcom, which began in 1981, follows the lives of the Trotter brothers and their far-from-straightforward path from rags to riches.
Over the course of seven series and several Christmas specials, the Trotters tried various get-rich-quick schemes, buying low-quality or sometimes black-market goods and selling them at the market.
Many in Bosnia and in the wider Balkans easily identify with the Trotters' endless wheeling and dealing.
In the region that went through a series of wars in the 1990s, where the economy was shattered and remains deeply corrupt, the Trotter ways o... [truncated]
