"This night is very hard for us because it's attacks by the terrorist, by the Russian Federation. It's very loud outside because we’re right now in the parking (lot) with a lot of people. We feel a little bit scared because it’s very, very noisy, because of the rockets, because of the Shaheds which are flying like bees. It’s very scary because you might die of it. So we’re a little bit shocked because the bomb (Shahed) detonated near our house. And we were very near it. I believe in peace but in a strong way with partners and the Ukrainian side. So, it might be Zelenskyy will do this but as you see it will not be soon because partners, (U.S. President Donald) Trump, other leaders are just talking and it's like what (are they) talking about? It's like the fourth year is coming like of a war."

Japan's Princess Kako of Akishino began her official visit to Brazil on Thursday as part of celebrations marking the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The visit takes place during what is being commemorated as the “Year of Friendship Exchange between Brazil and Japan”.
In Sao Paulo, Kako visited the Japanese Pavilion in Ibirapuera Park, where she participated in a series of activities.
Accompanied by Jose Taniguchi, President of the Association of Japanese Prefectures in Brazil, she paid her respects at the Monument in Honor of the Pioneers of Japanese Immigration, planted and watered a cherry blossom tree, toured the Japanese Pavilion, and fed koi fish.
Kako is also scheduled to visit the Brazilian Society of Japanese Culture and Social Assistance in the Liberdade district and is expected to meet with São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes.
The last visit by a member of the Japanese imperial family to Brazil took place in 2018, when Princess Mako, Kako’s older sister, came to mark the 110th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in the country.
In an 11-day tour Princess Kako will also visit Rio de Janeiro, Foz do Iguaçu, Campo Grande, several cities in the state of Parana, and Brasilia, where she is scheduled to meet government officials, as well as attend events with the Japanese-Brazilian community, the largest outside Japan.

We collided together and Culture Club was born and it was an amazing thing, but there were some ups and downs of course, you know, I mean, for the most part it was a wonderful experience and a beautiful time in our lives.”

    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Roy Hay, recording artist:
“It's hard, there aren't any bands, you're right these days. It's like 90% of new acts are either solo artists or hip hop. It's very hard to be a band these days, you are right. So maybe not, I don't know. But I think people want bands, don't they? I mean, you know.”
Reporter: “It seems to ebb and flow. It's bands who are very big in the era.”
“I think record companies and the solo artists and having 12 songwriters and everything and Max Martin doing every song. It's just rubbish and it's just ruining the business. I'm with Dave Grohl, man. Just get together with your mates in the garage and start playing music. That's where the soul is.”

    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Alison Ellwood, director:
“I think the music is timeless, the songs are amazing, and they're about, the songs in essence are about the love that John and George had for one another. And I think with the backlash against the LGBTQ plus community right now, this is more important now than ever to tell this truly, a love story that was very strong and defied the odds.”
    7. Various, cast, crew, and event staff
    STORYLINE:
Roy Hay and Mikey Craig walked the red carpet at the Tribeca Film Festival Thursday for the premiere of a documentary on the band.
“Boy George and Culture Club” covers the ups and downs of one of the eighties' most iconic bands.
“Well, yeah, it's sometimes it hurts a bit, but it's, you know, but it's a great, we had such a wonderful time, you know, we're four guys trying to make our way in the world. We collided together and Culture Club was born and it was an amazing thing, but there were some ups and downs of course, you know, I mean, for the most part it was a wonderful experience and a beautiful time in our lives," said Mikey Craig.
The Tribeca Film Festival began as a way to help lower Manhattan recover after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
The festival continues until June 15.

  • Pilgrims stream into Arafat during this year's Hajj, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, AP explains
    (6 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Mount Arafat, Saudi Arabia - 5 June 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Baraa Anwer, Associated Press: ++SOUNDBITE IS OVERLAID BY SHOT2++
"I’m on Mount Arafat, the site where Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon nearly 1,400 years ago. Arafat Day is the second day of the annual pilgrimage. It is considered the holiest day in Islam. It’s here that pilgrims gather, standing on the plain of Arafat to praise God, ask for forgiveness, and offer heartfelt prayers. Many raise their hands in worship, deeply emotional moments that marks the spiritual peak of the Hajj. Pilgrims will remain in Arafat, in prayer and reflection until sunset Thursday. Pilgrims will go to the desert plain of Muzdalifah to collect pebbles, which they will use the symbolic stoning of the devi in Mina. It’s a re-enactment of Prophet Abraham’s defiance of Satan who tried to dissuade him from obeying God. The stoning ritual spans several days and aligns with Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s most important holidays. Pilgrims will also perform the animal sacrifice — a tradition that honors Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. Finally, they will return to Mecca to circle the Kaaba once more, in what’s known (as) the farewell tawaf — marking the completion of a journey that for many is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream."

    3. Various of pilgrims gathered on Mount Arafat
    4. Various of pilgrims at Mount Arafat ++NIGHT SHOTS++
    STORYLINE:
They came in the dark of night, in the thousands, to clamber up the rocky hill called Mount Arafat in Saudi Arabia.
The mound southeast of Mecca is little known outside Islam. For non-Muslims, the circling of the Kaaba — the black, cube-shaped structure in the holy city — is the most arresting visual moment associated with the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
But for Muslims, it was the rite of praying at Arafat that represented the sum and substance of the Hajj.
The hill and the Day of Arafat, as the second day of the annual pilgrimage is called, hold huge significance in Islam.
Arafat is mentioned in the Quran and it is where the Prophet Muhammad is said to have given his last sermon on his final Hajj.
According to traditional sayings of the prophet, the Day of Arafat is the most sacred day of the year, when God draws near to the faithful and forgives their sins.
The moment of closeness to God makes it the most personally resonant part of the pilgrimage for many.
By 4 a.m. local time on Tuesday, the hill’s 70-meter-high (40 feet) summit was packed with faithful.
They climbed over its rough outcroppings, hauling their personal belongings with them and looking for an open spot.
They sat in groups on its stone ledges and in the crevasses between the big boulders.

“Yeah, I want to get them off site. I want to find a way to get them off site. I've already talked to our operations people about moving them off site. We have to get them off of our property away from the potential where we could have an incident like this that could have been far worse. We don't want to lose an entire facility, and more importantly, we don't want to hurt anyone. So we want to get these vehicles off site.”

    STORYLINE:
A fast-moving fire erupted early Thursday at a transit bus lot in Philadelphia filled with dozens of decommissioned vehicles, sending a thick plume of black smoke into the sky but causing no injuries.
The fire did not impact the morning commute.
Citing an abundance of caution, the city’s Public Health Department warned nearby residents to stay indoors if possible and urged others to avoid the area. Agency inspectors were collecting samples to assess air quality and the potential for any threat.
The cause of the blaze was not immediately known but officials said that a total of 40 buses caught on fire and 15 of those were electric buses. One of the electric buses was involved in a fire incident in 2020.
Scott Sauer, General Manager of SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority), said, while they are not yet sure how the fire started, the remaining fleet of the electric buses will be removed from the site.
The lot where the fire broke out was filled with decommissioned buses scheduled for disposal. No in-service buses were in the area where the blaze occurred and none were threatened by the fire.
