  • Israel strikes Beirut's suburbs to target what it says is Hezbollah drone production
    (5 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beirut, Lebanon - 5 June 2025
    1. Explosion, zoom in to smoke on Beirut suburbs skyline
    2. Explosion hits multiple sites
    3. Fire and smoke at site of strike
    4. Various interceptors being launched
    STORYLINE:
The Israeli military struck several sites in Beirut’s southern suburbs that it said held underground facilities used by Hezbollah for drone production Thursday, on the eve of the Eid al-Adha holiday.
The strikes marked the first time in more than a month that Israel had struck on the outskirts of the capital and the fourth time since a US-brokered ceasefire agreement ended the latest war between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in November.
Israel posted a warning ahead of the strikes on X, formerly known as Twitter, announcing that it would hit eight buildings at four locations.
Israel has continued to carry out near-daily strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon since the ceasefire, which Lebanon has said are in violation of the agreement. Israeli officials say the strikes are intended to prevent Hezbollah from regrouping after a war that took out much of its senior leadership and arsenal.
The Israeli army said in a statement that Hezbollah was “working to produce thousands of drones under the guidance and financing of Iranian terrorist groups.”
Hezbollah “used drones extensively in its attacks against the State of Israel and is working to expand its drone industry and production in preparation for the next war,” the army statement said.
There was no immediate statement from Hezbollah.
A Hezbollah official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly denied that there were drone production facilities at the targeted locations.
“In the (ceasefire) agreement, there is a mechanism for investigating if there is a complaint,” the official said. “Israel in general, and Netanyahu in particular, wants to continue the war in the region.”
The conflict killed more than 4,000 people in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians, while the Lebanese government said in April that Israeli strikes had killed another 190 people and wounded 485 wounded since the ceasefire.
There has been increasing pressure on Hezbollah - both domestic and international - to give up its remaining arsenal, but officials with the group have said they will not do so until Israel stops its airstrikes and withdraws from five points it is still occupying along the border in southern Lebanon.

    4. Students entering the faculty
    5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) (No name given), student:
“Many people have tried to misrepresent this as a protest, a strike, a demonstration, no. It is not. It is a non-attendance (to classes), it is not a renunciation of dialogue. It is a way to exert a peaceful, legal and institutional pressure with the protection of the University Student Federation (FEU) and our space, which is what we can do."

    7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) (No name given), student:
"To exert pressure in this way so that finally there is an open dialogue, an exchange that really has the objective of reaching positions that are of solution. And also the position of the University, it must be said, at least of several faculties, the position is firm, the measures are not going to be accepted and we do not want to compromise either. The measures have to go backwards and we have to look for alternatives so as not to be burdened with that.”

    STORYLINE:
An increase in mobile Internet access rates in Cuba by the state-owned telecommunications company ETECSA sparked an unusual protest among university students that has grown this week.
University students from various faculties on Thursday publicly expressed their rejection of the rate increase for a service they consider fundamental.
“We understand perfectly well the financial situation of the ETECSA, the financial situation of the country, but our position is that this situation cannot be placed on the shoulders of the people. It cannot be that the people have to assume this economic burden,” said a student from the History faculty who did not want to give his name.
He rejected claims this was a protest, ans instead said i was the channel they had available to make their point heard.
Three students from the Faculty of Mathematics, wishing to remain anonymous due to the sensitive situation, stated that they were on “strike,” meaning they would not be attending classes.
Two teachers with whom AP spoke, who preferred to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to comment, confirmed movement among students, including some non-attendance at exams, which is striking given that the dates coincide with the end of the school cycle.
They also said that ETECSA executives visited the faculties this week to meet with stude... [truncated]

    11. Peters and Fernandez walking away
    STORYLINE:
Eager customers lined up outside the Nintendo store in New York City hours in advance to collect their pre-ordered Nintendo Switch 2 video game consoles.
The much anticipated Switch 2, being released around the world Thursday, is an upgrade to its eight-year-old predecessor with new social features meant to draw players into online gaming. Nintendo is counting on the Switch 2 to boost sagging sales.
In the U.S., a chaotic pre-order process in April left some fans frustrated after the consoles quickly sold out. Many of those waiting for the New York City store to open had ordered online.
Nicole Peters came from Staten Island to wait on line to be one of the first to purchase the new console.
"I'm looking at close to $1000... with accessories," Peters said. "Yeah , it's a little steep... it's Nintendo, I'm ride or die."
In Japan, the new consoles were sold through a competitive lottery system that Nintendo said got about 2.2 million applications.
Outside the official draw, some retailers offered their own lotteries to pre-order the devices.
The new console comes with a larger and higher resolution... [truncated]

    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Scott Sauer, General Manager of SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority):

    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Scott Sauer, General Manager of SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority):
“Yeah, I want to get them off site. I want to find a way to get them off site. I've already talked to our operations people about moving them off site. We have to get them off of our property away from the potential where we could have an incident like this that could have been far worse. We don't want to lose an entire facility, and more importantly, we don't want to hurt anyone. So we want to get these vehicles off site.”
    6. Wide of press conference
    STORYLINE:
A fast-moving fire erupted early Thursday at a transit bus lot in Philadelphia filled with dozens of decommissioned vehicles, sending a thick plume of black smoke into the sky but causing no injuries.
The fire did not impact the morning commute.
Citing an abundance of caution, the city’s Public Health Department warned nearby residents to stay indoors if possible and urged others to avoid the area. Agency inspectors were collecting samples to assess air quality and the potential for any threat.
The cause of the blaze was not immediately known but officials said that a total of 40 buses caught on fire and 15 of those were electric buses. One of the electric buses was involved in a fire incident in 2020.
Scott Sauer, General Manager of SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority), said, while they are not yet sure how the fire started, the remaining fleet of the electric buses will be removed from the site.
The lot where the fire broke out was filled with decommissioned buses scheduled for disposal. No in-service buses were in the area where the blaze occurred and none were threatened by the fire.

  • With 'Dogma' re-release, Kevin Smith praises Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' deal
    (5 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Los Angeles - 30 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Kevin Smith, writer/director:
"There's a part of me that's like, well, the normal way is you make it and sell it to somebody else and they exploit it. You know, now we live in a world where it's like, could you imagine owning your own IP? And that's why Ryan's super smart because he built brand new IP, made a deal where he's like I eventually own this stuff. And we live in that world now, especially if you're a fantastic mainstream filmmaker like Ryan Coogler is, where you could walk into a studio, studios are hurting so bad and you can make a deal like that where they're like, look, we'll try anything at this point. And it's working out for both parties. That's gonna be mutually beneficial. So I think that could absolutely be the future, but you have rarefied breathing if you're the director that can go in and make a demand like that. I, even at this point in my career, I don't think I could go in and be like, and I will own the movie, they'll be like bullshit, you know. So it'll work for very talented filmmakers like Ryan, not for everyone."
