    STORYLINE:
An Israeli strike hit a tent in Gaza port on Tuesday night, killing seven people, including two women and a seven-year-old girl, Maiar Abu Owda.
The girl was killed with her father, uncle, grandmother and grandfather, according to health officials in Shifa hospital and relatives of the victims.
Israel's military campaign has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which doesn't say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants.
The ministry is led by medical professionals but reports to the Hamas-run government. Its toll is seen as generally reliable by U.N. agencies and independent experts, though Israel has challenged its numbers.
Israel says it has killed around 20,000 militants, without providing evidence.
Around 860 Israeli soldiers have been killed since the Oct. 7 attack, including more than 400 during the fighting inside Gaza.

    STORYLINE:
Muslims from around the world are in the Saudi city of Mecca for the Hajj, one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
In the coming days, people will immerse themselves in religious rituals and acts of worship that originated more than 1,400 years ago.
They also have to contend with excess heat and other earthly factors, like a ban on children under the age of 12 and a crackdown on unauthorized entry.
Although the Hajj is at least a once-in-a-lifetime obligation — for every Muslim who can afford it and is physically able to make it — people don’t want to wait a lifetime to fulfil it.
But the Hajj has limited capacity, countries have set quotas, and there is only one time each year to do it. Patience really is a virtue and everything needs to align: availability, health, and finances.
Muslim-majority countries like Indonesia and Malaysia have decades-long waiting lists for the Hajj. Indonesia has 5.4 million people awaiting their turn, with the number increasing each year.
While there is nothing to stop people from performing the Hajj more than once, some governments believe this practice deprives others of the opportunity, especially in countries where demand is high.
India has a ban on “repeaters” and excludes applications from anyone who has previously performed the pilgrimage through the national Hajj committee, although there are exceptions from those accompanying certain categories of people like the elderly.

  • EU's top trade negotiator on US tariff talks: 'We’re advancing in the right direction at pace'
    (4 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Paris - 4 June 2025
    1. Arrival of EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic at briefing
    2. Various of briefing
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Maroš Šefčovič, EU Trade Commissioner:
"I have to say that after this discussion we both concluded that we are advancing in the right direction at pace, and as you know, our teams are currently discussing all the issues in Washington DC. They will spend most of the week there in a very concrete topic by topic discussion, and our goal, of course, is to maintain the momentum, and we agreed that after these technical talks would be concluded, it will come again back to our video conferencing and assess the progress and charter the way forward."
    4. Mid of cameraman adjusting equipment at OECD event on US tariffs
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Maroš Šefčovič, EU Trade Commissioner:
"Of course we discussed this with the US Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, and I told him that we strongly regret this latest US decision, and I explained to him that it clearly doesn't help the ongoing negotiations, especially as we are making progress."
    6. Mid of Šefčovič entering room holding documents related to discussions on US tariffs at the OECD meeting
    STORYLINE:
Europe and the United States are meeting in Paris on Wednesday to negotiate a settlement of a tense tariff spat with global economic ramifications between two global economic powerhouses.
The European Union’s top trade negotiator, Maroš Šefčovič, met Wednesday with his American counterpart, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, on the sidelines of a meeting of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
“We’re advancing in the right direction at pace,” Šefčovič said at a news conference. He said ongoing technical meetings between EU and U.S. negotiators in Washington, D.C. would be soon followed by a video conference between himself and Greer to then "assess the progress and charter the way forward.”
Brussels and Washington are unlikely to reach a substantive trade agreement in Paris. The issues dividing them are too difficult to resolve quickly.
US President Donald Trump regularly fumes about America’s persistent trade deficit with the European Union, which was a record $161 billion last year, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.
Trump blames the gap between what the U.S. sells and what it buys from Europe on unfair trade practices and often singles out for criticism the EU’s 10% tax on imported cars. America’s was 2.5% until Trump raised it to 25% in April.
The EU has argued its purchases of U.S. services, especially in the technology sector, all but overcome the deficit.
After the Trump administration’s surprise tariffs last week on steel rattled global markets and complicated the ongoing, wider tariff negotiations between Brussels and Washington, the EU on Monday said it is preparing “countermeasures” against the U.S.
The EU has offered the U.S. a “zero for ... [truncated]

"But we're thankful for all allies and partners coming together, building readiness that ensures our collective security, and collective security requires great readiness, it requires great interoperability, and it's exercises like this that gives us a chance to come together and be stronger together."
    4. Various of military exercise
    5. SOUNDBITE (Greek) Maj. Gen. Ilias Kostakis, commander of the Greek army's 20th armored division:
"For ten days, we conducted various training exercises in riverine operations, operations in populated areas, defensive and offensive operations, and today you had the opportunity to witness the final phase, where all the participating countries—seven countries in total, with their resources and personnel—carried out an exercise that I believe was executed in an entirely satisfactory manner."
    6. Various of military exercise
    7. SOUNDBITE (Greek) Maj. Gen. Ilias Kostakis, commander of the Greek army's 20th armored division:
"The hypothetical scenario was a general and vague one, without indicating any country or countries. NATO and American forces always work with such scenarios, so we simply integrated them, some hypothetical forces of irrelevant nationality, but integrated into the vicinity of the region, so there were defenders and attackers. With the help of the American forces, we also used simulation systems that made the whole training much more realistic."
    8. Various of military exercise
    STORYLINE:
One of the largest U.S.-led military exercises in Europe this year—Immediate Response 25—showed off its skills during a demonstration in northern Greece on Wednesday.
Bringing together 12,000 troops from eight NATO countries, including the U.S., Greece, France, Bulgaria, Spain, and North Macedonia, the exercises are aimed at strengthening joint readiness and NATO interoperability.
"We're thankful for all allies and partners coming together, building readiness that ensures our collective security, and collective security requires great readiness. It requires great interoperability, and it's exercises like this that gives us a chance to come together and be stronger together," said Maj. Gen. Levon Cumpton, Chief of Staff, U.S. Forces Europe and Africa.
In addition to Greece, the exercise is taking place in multiple Balkan countries from May 26 to June 9.

Of course, this is not easy, and we have to make sure that we bring Ukraine to a lasting and durable peace. This is exactly what the U.S. wants, what all the allies want, of course what Ukraine wants. So Putin should never ever try it again, and that means we have to test him, we have to sit down with him, or at least with his team, discuss, et cetera. And it is the U.S. taking the lead on this and I'm really glad that they do that."
