    STORYLINE:
More than 20,000 residents were being evacuated from part of Cologne's city center on Wednesday as specialists prepared to defuse three unexploded U.S. bombs from World War II that were unearthed earlier this week.
Even 80 years after the end of the war, unexploded bombs dropped during wartime air raids are frequently found in Germany.
Disposing of them sometimes entails large-scale precautionary evacuations such as the one on Wednesday, though the location this time was unusually prominent and this is Cologne's biggest evacuation since 1945. There have been bigger evacuations in other cities.
Authorities on Wednesday morning started evacuating about 20,500 residents from an area within a 1,000-meter (3,280-foot) radius of the bombs, which were discovered on Monday during preparatory work for road construction. They were found in the Deutz district, just across the Rhine River from Cologne's historic center.
As well as homes, the area includes 58 hotels, nine schools, several museums and office buildings and the Messe/Deutz train station. It also includes three bridges across the Rhine — among them the heavily used Hohenzollern railway bridge, which leads into Cologne's central station and is being shut during the defusal work itself. Shipping on the Rhine will also be suspended.
The plan is for the bombs to be defused during the course of the day. When exactly that happens depends on how long it takes for authorities to be sure that everyone is out of the evacuation zone.

  • Clouds of smoke visible on Gaza skyline as Israeli operations continue
    (4 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Gaza Strip as seen from southern Israel - 16 May 2025
    ++MUTE++
    1. Smoke rising on Gaza skyline as seen from southern Israel
    STORYLINE:
Large clouds of smoke could be seen rising over the Gaza skyline on Wednesday, as Israel's offensive in the embattled enclave continued.
On Tuesday, Israeli forces fired on people as they headed toward an aid distribution site in Gaza, killing at least 27, Palestinian health officials and witnesses said, in the third such shooting in three days. The army said it fired “near a few individual suspects” who left the designated route, approached its forces and ignored warning shots.
The near-daily shootings have occurred after an Israeli and U.S.-backed foundation established aid distribution points inside Israeli military zones, a system it says is designed to circumvent Hamas. The United Nations has rejected the new system, saying it doesn’t address Gaza’s mounting hunger crisis and allows Israel to use aid as a weapon.
The Israeli military said it “fired to drive away suspects.” In a statement, an army spokesperson claimed casualty numbers published by Hamas were exaggerated, but said the incident was being investigated.
It also claimed that the army is not preventing Palestinians in Gaza from reaching aid in the distribution areas, but rather allowing it.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which operates the sites, says there has been no violence in or around them. On Tuesday, it acknowledged that the Israeli military was investigating whether civilians were wounded “after moving beyond the designated safe corridor and into a closed military zone,” in an area that was “well beyond our secure distribution site.”
Gaza’s roughly 2 million people are almost completely reliant on international aid because Israel’s offensive has destroyed nearly all of Gaza’s food production capabilities. Israel imposed a blockade on supplies into Gaza in March, and limited aid began to enter again late last month after pressure from allies and warnings of famine.
Israel's offensive in Gaza began after Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 people hostage in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack into southern Israel. The militant group is still holding 58 hostages, a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.
Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants.

  • Losing faith? how a rare version of Christianity is heading for extinction in rural Japan

    Ikitsuki, Nagasaki, Japan - 27 April 2025
    7. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Masatsugu Tanimoto, 68-year-old faithful:
"Compared to the past, there are very few occasions to perform orasho, and many have discontinued their beliefs. We have no successors so it is likely to end with our generation - that is the situation. Whatever happens in the future, I hold onto the hope (that my son will show interest) but Kakure Christianity itself will become extinct sooner or later and that is inevitable. But I hope at least in my family, it will go on."

    9. Tanimoto flipping pages of a hand-written orasho lyrics passed on from his father
    STORYLINE:
Here in rural Nagasaki, three men in their late 60s and early 70s come together in prayer.
Wearing dark kimonos, they take a deep breath and quietly close their eyes as they solemnly make the sign of the cross and say their prayers.
The men are followers of a rare version of Christianity, unique to this part of rural Japan, and are known as Hidden Christians.
This recitation of Latin chants, called Orasho, is an important part of Hidden Christians’ ceremonies.
It comes from the original Latin or Portuguese prayers brought to Japan by 16th-century missionaries.
Christianity spread rapidly in 16th-century Japan when Jesuit priests had spectacular success converting warlords and peasants alike, most especially on the southern main island of Kyushu, where the foreigners established trading ports in Nagasaki. Hundreds of thousands, by some estimates, embraced the religion.
That changed after the shoguns began to see the religion as a threat. The crackdown that followed in the early 17th century was fierce.
When thousands of Christians rebelled in nearby Shimabara in 1637, they were obliterated; remaining believers were chased underground.
As Japan opened up to foreign influence, a dozen Hidden Christians cautiously declared their faith, and their remarkable perseverance, to a French Catholic priest in March 1865 in Nagasaki city.
Many became Catholics after Japan formally lifted the ban on Christianity in 1873.
But others chose to stay Kakure Kirishitan (Hidden Christians), continuing to practice the rituals that their ancestors preserved during their days underground.
Being 68, Masatsugu Tanimoto is the youngest of the four men who can recite Orasho in his community.
As a child, he regularly saw Orasho being performed before an altar when neighbours gathered for funerals, memorials and o... [truncated]
