  • China MOFA Briefing - 4 June 2025
    (4 Jun 2025)
    MOFA Briefing
    Spokesperson: Lin Jian
    Date: 4 June 2025
    Duration: 8 mins 49 sec
    STORYLINE:
    1. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba recently stated that the painful memories and lessons of history must be remembered to avoid repeating the mistakes of war. What is China's comment on this?"
In November 2024, during a meeting with President Xi Jinping in Lima, Peru, Ishiba expressed Japan’s commitment to “facing history squarely and looking to the future,” and to pursuing a path of peaceful development. His latest remarks further emphasize Japan’s need to reflect on history and avoid repeating past mistakes. China values this position. A correct understanding and attitude toward history, along with concrete actions reflecting remorse and apology for aggression, are essential for Japan’s reintegration into the international community after WWII. This is fundamental to the political foundation of China-Japan relations, Japan’s ties with its neighbors, and its international image. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Japan once again faces a test of history and morality. The four political documents between China and Japan established the principle of “learning from history and looking to the future,” and Japan has made solemn political commitments. We hope Japan will deeply reflect on its historical responsibilities, sincerely learn from the past, and take a responsible attitude toward history, its people, and the future. Japan should firmly reject any attempts to whitewash or obscure its history of aggression and continue on the path of peaceful development to earn the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community.
    2. Does China believe that China–South Korea relations will improve after the new South Korean government takes office? What kind of China policy does China hope South Korea will adopt?
China believes that the development of China-South Korea relations is fundamentally driven by shared interests. These relations are not targeted at any third party and should not be influenced by external factors. China consistently opposes taking sides and bloc confrontation. We are willing to work with South Korea to promote the sound and stable development of bilateral relations, bring more benefits to both peoples, and contribute to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
    3. After Lee Jae-myung was elected as South Korea’s 21st president, the White House responded by saying, 'Although South Korea conducted its election in a free and fair manner, the United States remains deeply concerned about China’s activities and influence efforts targeting democracies around the world.' What is China’s response?
We have noted the remarks. China firmly adheres to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs and has never and will never interfere in any coun... [truncated]

  • South Korea has endured 6 months of political turmoil. What can we expect in Lee's presidency?
    (4 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Seoul, South Korea - 4 June 2025
    1. Various of South Korea's newly-elected President Lee Jae-myung on stage at inauguration ceremony
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Foster Klug, The Associated Press:
“After six tumultuous months, South Korea has a new president. Liberal firebrand Lee Jae Myung was elected early this morning and is now being inaugurated in the building behind me. This is the National Assembly. The parliament. The same building Lee and other lawmakers elbowed their way into after the December 3 martial law declaration by former president Yoon Suk Yeol. That night convulsed the nation and eventually ended Yoon's presidency. Lee is now leader of a divided country. Conservatives fear he will distance South Korea from traditional ally Washington and pursue hasty reconciliation with rival North Korea. An urgent task is the establishment of ties with Donald Trump who has threatened South Korea with deep tariffs. Lee's party controls parliament and so he will presumably pursue a raft of liberal policies. Many here are hoping the peaceful, orderly election is a sign of health for South Korea's democracy after mass protests following the martial law decree and Yoon's impeachment.”

    STORYLINE:
South Korea’s new President Lee Jae-myung said he’ll pursue dialogue with North Korea while bolstering a trilateral partnership with the U.S. and Japan, during his inaugural address after taking office Wednesday.
He said that his government will deal with potential North Korean aggression with “a strong deterrence” based on the solid South Korea-U.S. military alliance.
But added he would also leave the door open for dialogue with North Korea and establish peace on the Korean Peninsula.
He said he’ll pursue pragmatic diplomacy and boost a trilateral Seoul-Washington-Tokyo cooperation based on the South Korea-U.S. alliance.
Lee won a snap election Tuesday for a five-year term.

  • Norman Reedus teases next 'bigger, better, badder' 'Boondock Saints'
    (4 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Los Angeles - 3 June 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Norman Reedus, actor:
(Reporter: "I saw that there's gonna be a new 'Boondock Saints.' I'm so curious. There's gonna a bigger budget this time. What would you like to see different now that there is more budget to work?")
"Ooh, good question. There's more traveling. That's a budget thing. You know, when you meet them - they've been in jail this whole time, so when you meet them, they got to be different. I think what we're going to bring to it is, I mean, it's not really a budget thing, but I think it starts off real dark. Like, when you saw those 'Boondock Saints' movies, especially the first one, they get through these situations by the skin of their teeth, or whatever you say that. And this one, I think, you know, it's like the world sort of left them in there, right? So I think we're gonna start it off real dark. Which is not really a budget thing, but I don't know why I went there, but I went there."
(Reporter: "Some travel and a little darker, that's what people can expect.")
    "Yeah, bigger, better, badder."

  • New searches underway in Portugal near where toddler Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007
    (4 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS

    1. Wide of police barrier
    2. Pan of three German police vehicles passing barrier
    3. Close of police tape
    4. Pan of two more German police passing barrier
    STORYLINE:
Police investigating the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann searched near an abandoned rural building in southern Portugal on Tuesday as they launched fresh probes near the holiday resort where she was last seen 18 years ago.
The case received worldwide interest for several years, with reports of sightings of McCann occurring as far away as Australia, while books and television documentaries were produced about her disappearance.
German investigators and Portuguese police officers and firefighters were searching in the countryside several miles from the Praia da Luz resort, where the 3-year-old disappeared from her bed while on vacation with her family on May 3, 2007.
The teams were seen using pickaxes, shovels and chainsaws to clear dense vegetation and dig near a derelict building. Firefighters pumped water out of a well.
Almost two decades on, investigators in the U.K., Portugal and Germany are still piecing together what happened on the night the toddler disappeared. She was in the same room as her brother and sister — 2-year-old twins — while their parents, Kate and Gerry, had dinner with friends outside.
Portuguese police said Monday that detectives were acting on a request from a German public prosecutor as they carry out “a broad range” of searches this week in the area of Lagos, in southern Portugal.
The main suspect is a German national identified by media as Christian Brueckner, who is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in Portugal in 2005. Brueckner has denied any involvement.

    6. Various of candle light vigil gathering at Victoria Park
    STORYLINE:
Hong Kong again saw no mass commemoration of the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown on Wednesday, with no sign of the candlelit vigils that once drew tens of thousands to Victoria Park.
The vigils came to an end in 2020 amid the enforcement of strict national security measures and the COVID pandemic.
Scores of police were patrolling Victoria Park Wednesday, where instead a small fair was offering food and other products, with no mention of what happened in Beijing on June 4, 36 years ago.
In recent years, Hong Kong authorities have removed monuments and books that recorded the event.
This week, a reporter asked local leader Chief Executive John Lee if people can commemorate the June 4 anniversary, but Lee did not directly answer, saying only that “any activity on any day must be in accordance with the law.”

    4. Wide of people applauding with Schwarzenegger on stage
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Arnold Schwarzenegger, former California governor:++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT++
“You can't just sit around and make excuses because one guy in a very nice White House on Pennsylvania Avenue doesn't agree with you. I know all of you are thinking now, I hope that Arnold attacks Trump and says some really terrible things about Trump. Right? But that’s not my style. First of all, I have a rule. I do not criticize a president outside of our borders. No matter who it is and what party he belongs to or she belongs to. Second of all, I know that the people are sick and tired of the whining and the complaining, and the doom and gloom. They want heroes. They don’t want more complaints, that’s not what we want. And that’s not what we need.”
    STORYLINE:
Former California governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger said “stop whining” to environmentalists who despair at the approach of President Donald Trump's administration.
He said on Tuesday that he keeps hearing from environmentalists and policy experts lately: “What is the point of fighting for a clean environment when the government of the United States says climate change is a hoax and coal and oil is the future?”
Schwarzenegger told the Austrian World Summit, an event he helps organize, that his response is: “Stop whining and get to work.”
He pointed to examples of local and regional governments and companies taking their own action, including his own administration in California, and argued that 70% of pollution is reduced at local or state level.
“You can't just sit around and make excuses because one guy in a very nice White House on Pennsylvania Avenue doesn't agree with you,” he said.
Schwarzenegger added that attacking the president is “not my style” and he doesn't criticize any president when outside the U.S.
“I know that the people are sick and tired of the whining and the complaining and the doom and gloom,” he said. “The only way we win the people's hearts and minds is by showing them action that makes their lives better.”
