"On the other hand, it doesn't seem to us at all that this solves the problem we've been having, because our biggest issue is budgetary. That is, we are working without a budget and we are truly asking for the appropriate budget to be allocated so that we can continue working and move forward with what we do every day."
    7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Micaela Verdugo, madre de Tomás, paciente de cáncer:
"I can testify that it is one of the best hospitals, because in such a short time they have helped my son so much. And the way they care for patients is beyond words. I always say, and I will keep repeating, that to us they are like family. They are an additional family to us. The Garrahan Hospital is an additional family to us."

    STORYLINE:
A doctor testifying as a dog bite expert was cross-examined by prosecutors Tuesday in Karen Read 's second murder trial, as the defense argues she was framed for killing her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, and that wounds on his arms came from an animal.
Prosecutors challenged an assessment by Dr. Marie Russell, a retired emergency medicine physician, who said the wounds on O’Keefe’s arms were the result of a dog attack.
Asked by reporters about Russell's testimony, Karen Read said it was "fantastic."
"She's just honest and speaks from her experience," Read added as she was leaving the court.
Russell testified Monday she has treated hundreds of dog attacks and bites over nearly 30 years and became interested in the Read case after seeing a news report about questions over whether O’Keefe was attacked by a dog before he died.
The prosecution had earlier sought to block Russell from testifying, questioning her credibility. Although the judge allowed her to take the stand, the prosecution renewed their scrutiny and noted Russell never testified before as a dog bite expert and hasn't taken a dog bite forensics course — however she said she was unsure any such certification or training existed... • Peruvian government says illegal mining in former Nazca Lines area need to comply with regulations

    3. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jorge Montero, Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru:
"The Nazca polygon was a very large area where a number of economic activities were restricted, including mining. There has been a reduction, so we are evaluating such impact."
    4. Officials during briefing
    5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jorge Montero, Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru:
"I understand that within these reduced boundaries, there is no archaeological heritage or any other type of heritage, because otherwise this reduction would surely not have taken place. So if the competent ministry considers that this percentage of the former polygon area does not contain any heritage value, then it can be offloaded."
    5. Briefing
    6. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jorge Montero, Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru:
"If within the boundaries of the offloaded sector, there are mining activities that were illegal when the reserve existed, then they would now need to comply with the regulations to be lawful, or otherwise be suspended. This is a new and unexpected situation for us that we have to address."
    7. Briefing
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    ARCHIVE: Nazca, Peru – 18 May 1995
    8. Various from Nazca Lines
    STORYLINE:
Peru's Ministry of Mines on Tuesday said that the government's decision to reduce the boundaries of the protected Nazca Lines park would allow mining activities within the law's mandates.
The decision to reduce the reserve by 2,162 square miles (5,600 square kilometers) to almost half its original size, announced on May 30, had sparked alarm among conservationists, archaeologists, and environmental advocates.
The critic's argument was partially confirmed when the Ministry of Culture, steward of the park, also said there is mining in the area.
During Tuesday's briefing, Jorge Montero, Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru, said those with illegal mining projects in the now offloaded area "would now need to comply with the regulations to be lawful, or otherwise be suspended."
"This is a new and unexpected situation for us that we have to address," Montero said.
Critics consider this a rollback that paves the way for informal mining and weakens decades of cultural and ecological protection, while the government says the adjustment reflects updated scientific studies and does not compromise the UNESCO World Heritage status or the site's core protections.
The area in question forms part of a UNESCO-recognized World Heritage Site, home to the Nazca Lines — massive geoglyphs etched into the desert thousands of years ago — and one of Peru's most fragile desert ecosystems.
The Nazca Lines, located on the slopes of the Pacific coastal desert south of Lima, number more than 300 and include drawings of human figures, animals, plants and objects. So... [truncated]

  • French actor Camille Rutherford talks about taking the romcom genre seriously, for Laura Piani's 'Ja
    (3 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Belgium - 27 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Camille Rutherford, actor:
“I love watching comedies. I think I wanted to try and be an actress because of comedies I watched as a child and as a teenager. And in that movie, the important thing I think Laura was asking me was try not to be too cynical and to understand that her movie is playing with rom-coms, with the symbols, but she didn't want it to be a satire. She didn't want it be a parody, I don't know how to say parody in English, a satire. So we couldn't make it just funny or just like make all the traditional romantic scenes like sketches. We could do it in rehearsal to have fun, because that's something I really like to do, but she wanted it to be, like you're saying, maybe more subtle.”

  • 'Jane Austen Wrecked My Life' director Laura Piani on why writing comedy is challenging
    (3 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Paris - 23 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Laura Piani/Writer-director:
“Writing a comedy makes you very humble because you fail and you fail, and you fail again because sometimes it's funny when you write it or it's funny when your hear it and then you shoot it and it's just not working and you need to find... So I'm glad that you mentioned the physical comedy as much as sometimes a line that was funny. I tried to balance that. I was inspired also by some Jane Austen's book. And one thing that I realized that I love so much about her writing is the way she, when characters are talking, they interrupt themselves. When it becomes too emotional or when she wants to be funny. And this was a very big inspiration. It's like, okay, we know that good lines, good dialogs means people never saying what they feel or what they think sometimes, most of the time, no? It's the in between that is interesting to explore.”

    STORYLINE:
Poland’s President-elect Karol Nawrocki met with current President Andrzej Duda at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw in his first public appearance since being elected.
Duda invited Nawrocki to a meeting on Tuesday evening, and said that he believes it will be only the first of meetings in which he will share his experiences, primarily in the field of security policy and international policy.
Nawrocki, who was supported by U.S. President Donald Trump, won 50.89% of votes in a tight race against Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who received 49.11%.
The election revealed deep divisions in the country, which is located along the eastern flank of NATO and the European Union.
Nawrocki, who is set to take office on Aug. 6, is expected to shape the country’s domestic and foreign policy in ways that could strain ties with Brussels, while aligning the Central European nation of nearly 38 million people more closely with the Trump administration.
Nawrocki will replace Duda, whose second five-year term ends on Aug. 6. The Polish Constitution limits presidents to two terms.
