  • First day of new searches related to Madeleine McCann disappearance wrap up in Portugal
    (3 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Atalaia, Portugal - 3 June 2025

    STORYLINE:
The first day of renewed searches related to the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann came to a close in southern Portugal on Tuesday.
Vans with German and Portuguese officers onboard were seen leaving the area in Atalaia.
Detectives had spent the day searching near an abandoned rural building as they launched fresh probes near the holiday resort where she was last seen 18 years ago.
The case received worldwide interest for several years, with reports of sightings of McCann occurring as far away as Australia, while books and television documentaries were produced about her disappearance.
German investigators and Portuguese police officers and firefighters were searching in the countryside several miles from the Praia da Luz resort, where the 3-year-old disappeared from her bed while on vacation with her family on May 3, 2007.
Almost two decades on, investigators in the U.K., Portugal and Germany are still piecing together what happened on the night the toddler disappeared. She was in the same room as her brother and sister — 2-year-old twins — while their parents, Kate and Gerry, had dinner with friends outside.
Portuguese police said Monday that detectives were acting on a request from a German public prosecutor as they carry out “a broad range” of searches this week in the area of Lagos, in southern Portugal.
The main suspect is a German national identified by media as Christian Brueckner, who is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in Portugal in 2005.
He is under investigation on suspicion of murder in the McCann case but hasn’t been charged. He spent many years in Portugal, including in Praia da Luz, around the time of the child’s disappearance. Brueckner has denied any involvement.
The last time police resumed searches in the case was in 2023, when detectives from the three countries took part in an operation searching near a dam and a reservoir about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the resort.
McCann's family marked the 18th anniversary of her disappearance last month, and expressed their determination to keep searching.

    9. Soldiers at the funeral
    10. Pan from mourners to the funeral.
    STORYLINE:
Mourners attended the funeral of an Israeli soldier on Tuesday who was killed during a military operation in northern Gaza.
Staff Sergeant Omer Van Gelder, 22, was killed alongside other two soldiers, in what appeared to be the deadliest attack on Israel's forces since it ended a ceasefire with Hamas in March.
During the funeral in Jerusalem, the unit commander said Van Gelder joined the brigade “as part of your love and belonging to the place where you grew up."
The military said the three soldiers, all in their early 20s, died during combat on Monday, without providing details. Israeli media reported that they were killed in an explosion in the Jabaliya area.
This comes as Israeli forces fired on people as they headed toward an aid distribution site in Gaza on Tuesday, killing at least 27, Palestinian health officials and witnesses said, in the third such shooting in three days.
Israel ended the ceasefire after Hamas refused to change the agreement to release more hostages sooner. Israeli strikes have killed thousands of Palestinians since then, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
Israel also imposed a complete blockade on food and other imports for 2½ months, leading to warnings of famine before the restrictions were loosened in May.
Israel says the restrictions and the new system are designed to prevent Hamas from stealing aid. The U.N. says its ability to deliver aid across Gaza has been hindered by Israeli restrictions, the breakdown of law and order and widespread looting, but that there's no evidence of systematic diversion of aid by Hamas.
Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 people hostage in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack into southern Israel that ignited the war.
They are still holding 58 hostages, a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.
Israel's military campaign has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which... [truncated]

    Video by Baraa Anwer
    STORYLINE:
Dozens of pilgrims could be seen on Tuesday inside the Grand Mosque in Mecca, reading and praying in preparation for the beginning of the Hajj on Thursday.
The annual pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia is one of the most important religious journeys for Muslims around the world.
Required once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able, it is both a deeply spiritual experience and a physically demanding one.
Each year, millions of pilgrims perform rituals over five days, often walking long distances to Mount Arafah and Mina in intense heat and crowded conditions.
Not surprisingly, emotions run high in the mosque.
"An indescribable feeling," said Mohammed Abu Ras, a pilgrim from Libya.
Saeed Saif, who traveled from Morocco, shared the same gratitude.
"Thank God who made it easy for us to visit this place and pray for our country and our loved ones," he said, also remembering the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip. "May God grant them relief them of this torment.'' he added.
This year, over 1.4 million registered pilgrims have already arrived in Mecca.
To manage the crowds and rising temperatures, Saudi authorities have increased safety measures.
More than 269,000 people without permits have been turned away at city checkpoints.
Officials say many of last year’s heat-related deaths were among unauthorized pilgrims lacking proper access to shelter, water, and medical care

The complaint charges that Habba and Patel, acting outside their authority as government officials, violated Mayor Baraka's constitutional rights by falsely arresting him and maliciously prosecuting him for events that took place at Delaney Hall in Newark on May 9th, 2025.”

    4. Cutaway of reporters
    STORYLINE:
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka sued New Jersey's top federal prosecutor on Tuesday over his arrest on a trespassing charge at a federal immigration detention facility, saying the Trump-appointed attorney had pursued the case out of political spite.
Baraka, who leads New Jersey's biggest city, is a candidate in a crowded primary field for the Democratic nomination for governor next Tuesday. The lawsuit against interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba coincided with the day early in-person voting began.
The lawsuit seeks damages for “false arrest and malicious prosecution,” and also accuses Habba of defamation for comments she made about his case, which was later dropped.
Citing a post on X in which Habba said Baraka “committed trespass,” the lawsuit says Habba issued a “defamatory statement” and authorized his “false arrest” despite “clear evidence that Mayor Baraka had not committed the petty offense of ‘defiant trespass.’” The suit also names Ricky Patel, the Homeland Security Investigations agent in charge in Newark. Baraka's attorney, Nancy Erika Smith, said they also expect to sue President Donald Trump's administration but are required to wait six months.
“This is not about revenge,” Baraka said during a news conference. “Ultimately, I think this is about them taking accountability for what has happened to me.”

    STORYLINE:
New Orleans first responders were honored Tuesday with a "Blessing of the Fleet" to mark the start of the 2025 hurricane season.
Instead of a traditional fleet blessing, which typically blesses fishing boats before the start of fishing season, Archbishop Gregory Aymond sprinkled holy water on dozens of emergency vehicles which will eventually take part in rescue efforts.
"A lot of times we take for granted that as we evacuate for a hurricane or for other storms, that we're out of harm but our first responders stay", says Archbishop Aymond.
Last month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration unveiled their hurricane season outlook forecasted a 60% chance the season will above normal.
The prediction calls for 13 to 19 named storms with six to 10 becoming hurricanes and three-to-five reaching major status with winds of more than 110 mph.

  • Senators consider changes to debt limit and Medicaid in Trump's big bill
    (3 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Washington - 3 June 2025
    ++STARTS ON A SOUNDBITE++
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Rand Paul, (R) Kentucky:
"You know I think it's one of the most important debates of our time. And this is a debate over whether or not a country can have $36 trillion in debt, or whether we can have interest payments over $1 trillion. I think it's an important debate to have. I don't make it personal at all. I like the president, supported the president. In fact, I'm for the tax cuts. I am for a lot of the bill. But I cannot in good conscience give up every principle that I stand for and every principle that I was elected upon, and that's that we can't accumulate more debt. $2 trillion in debt this year is too much. If you're going to borrow $5 trillion means they're going to get to that limit within the next year or two. They're planning on spending $5 trillion they don't have. And I'm just not for that. But there is a way around all this. They could get my vote, and I could vote for the package if they take out the debt ceiling and vote on that separately."
    ++WHITE FLASH++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Rand Paul, (R) Kentucky:
"It's the largest increase in the debt ceiling ever. And they will say, well, it doesn't spend any money. It's not really adding to the debt. They will get to their $5 trillion limit. The question is sooner or later, but we're giving them the ability to borrow $5 trillion more. I'm not for borrowing $5 trillion more. I'm for borrowing a smaller amount over a shorter period of time."
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. John Fetterman, (D) Pennsylvania:
"I can't really support cutting Medicaid and there's millions, millions of Americans that depend on that. And, that's one of the reasons why I can't vote for the big, beautiful bill."
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Cynthia Lummis, (R) Wyoming:
"There still may be things that the Senate needs to tweak, and it could include the way that Medicaid is manipulated by the states to get them more money than was originally designed under the Medicaid program. So I think the focus in the Senate is going to be whether we can adequately address our concerns about Medicaid. If we can, I think we can get the magic 50."
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Chuck Grassley, (R) Iowa:
"This bill only passed the House by one vote. And whatever changes we make, it's got to go back there for approval."
    ++ENDS ON A SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
President Donald Trump wants his “big, beautiful” bill of tax breaks and spending cuts on his desk to be signed into law by the Fourth of July, and he's pushing the slow-rolling Senate to make it happen sooner rather than later.
Trump met with Senate Majority Leader John Thune at the White House early this week and has been dialing senators for one-on-one chats, using both the carrot and stick to nudge, badger and encourage them to act. But it's still a long road ahead for the 1,000-page-plus package.

I am truly thankful for the people's overwhelming support."

    STORYLINE:
Conservative candidate Kim Moon Soo conceded defeat on South Korea' s presidential elections, congratulating Lee Jae Myung of the liberal Democratic Party's win Tuesday's on the ballots.
"I humbly accept the choice of the people. Congratulations to the elected candidate, Lee Jae-myung,'' he said in a speech to the media, where he thanked all his supporters.
“Despite constant crisis, South Korea has always made great step forward because of people's strength,” he added.
Kim, 73, a hardline conservative who served as Yoon's labor minister, initially was considered past his political prime.
He suddenly emerged as a potential standard-bearer of the embattled South Korean conservatives after he solely defied a request by a Democratic Party lawmaker for all Cabinet members to stand and bow at the assembly in a gesture of apology over Yoon's decree.
Kim won the People Power Party's nomination in early May. He quickly faced an attempt by party leaders to replace him with Han Duck-soo, a former prime minister and independent who was more popular in polls. In a dramatic shift, Kim eventually retained his candidacy after party members voted in his favor.
President-elect Lee delivered a speech thanking his supporters, vowing his first task would be to “overcome the rebellion,” referring to former President Yoon’s martial law declaration in December.

    STORYLINE:
The iconic Goodyear airships are taking a “victory lap” over the skies of an Ohio city this week.
The Akron-based company is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the inaugural flight of its first branded blimp, known as “Pilgrim,” which took flight just outside of the city on June 3, 1925.
Goodyear began experimenting with lighter than aircraft in the early 1900s, and the dirigibles have since become one of the most lasting and iconic corporate brand assets in the world.
“People love the airships," Jim Crone, manager of Airship Maintenance at Goodyear said. "And the people specifically in this area here they identify with Goodyear and identify with the air ships. They've become part of this community. They've became part of Goodyear.”
For some, it evokes nostalgia, while for others it offers a glimpse into a larger-than-life advertising symbol.
