  • Spanish minister explains crusade against illegal Airbnb letting
    (3 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Madrid, Spain - 3 June 2025
    1. Wide of Minister for Social and Consumer Rights and 2030 Agenda, Pablo Bustinduy, working at a desk in the Consumer Rights Minister's office
    2. Mid of Bustinduy at desk
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Pablo Bustinduy, Spanish Minister for Social and Consumer Rights:
"Well , tourism is for sure a vital part of the Spanish economy. It's a strategic and very important sector, but as in every other economic activity, it must be conducted in a sustainable way. It cannot jeopardize the constitutional rights of the Spanish people. Their right to housing but also their right to well-being, their right to live in sustainable environments, in livable cities and now there is abundant research and evidence about the fact that short-term tourist rentals and the conversion of residential housing into tourist apartments are putting pressure on the right to housing, are driving up prices on rental market and are displacing local populations."
    4. Close of Bustinduy during interview
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Pablo Bustinduy, Spanish Minister for Social and Consumer Rights:
"Well, the price of rental units in the biggest Spanish cities have driven up, have shot up by over 100% in the last decade alone. And this has been the period where this economic sector of short-term tourist rentals has exploded. Just in the city of Madrid, we have over 15,000 illegal tourist apartments. And obviously there is a correlation between these two facts. It's not a linear relation. It's not the only factor affecting it. There are many others, but it is obviously one of the elements that is contributing not only to driving up rent prices, but also to voiding our urban centres."
    6. Bustinduy at desk
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Pablo Bustinduy, Spanish Minister for Social and Consumer Rights:
"A balance must be found between the constitutional rights of the Spanish people and economic activities in general. So what we're trying to defend and preserve is well this fact because for many years we have grown used to this idea that powerful corporations and multinational corporations have the power, the market power, to establish the norms of economic activities and economic relations. Well we're trying to rebalance that power to preserve consumer rights and to ensure that economic activities are conducted in conditions of transparency and fairness so as to preserve the rights of people and not just to protect the profits of immensely powerful corporations."
    8. Bustinduy at desk
    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Pablo Bustinduy, Spanish Minister for Social and Consumer Rights:
"I think that guaranteeing that tourist activities proceed in a fair, transparent and legal context is something that far from damaging tourism revenues will actually improve them. It will encourage longer stays, it will encourage responsible tourism, and it will preserve everything that we have in this wonderful country - which is, you know, th... [truncated]

    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Elizabeth Emanuel, fashion designer:
"This is important to me. So it's been at Hampton Court Palace for years in a box , which is why it looks so pristine now. So, I shouldn't be surprised, but I was when I saw what amazing condition it's in. And it tells the story of Emanuel, us in the '80s, how we designed, how it's made, everything is there, the gathers around the skirt, and this fabric is so beautiful. So that's why it's very special and I called it the sister dress because in a way it is. There's there's nothing else like it apart from Princess Diana's actual dress. So it brings back memories."

    13. SOUNDBITE (English) Elizabeth Emanuel, fashion designer:
"Diana no doubt was a fashion icon. And I think people connected with her because they could see her journey as well. Because she wasn't into fashion in the beginning, as people know, she was a nursery school teacher. And when she came to us, she didn't really have any interest in fashion and then she met our clothes and everything changed. So I think people resonate with that. They could see through the years her style was changing as she evolved and developed her own style. And that was wonderful for us to know we were there at the beginning."

    STORYLINE:
Resource-rich Mongolia is facing political uncertainty following the resignation early on Tuesday of its prime minister in the wake of protests over endemic corruption in the landlocked Asian country, squeezed between China and Russia.
Before he lost the confidence vote in the parliament, Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai warned that his removal could undermine Mongolia’s fledgling democracy. The vote followed weeks of protests sparked by reports of lavish spending by his son and calls for him to step down.
The reports, which cited expensive jewelry and helicopter rides for the son's female companion, underscored the vast gap between Mongolians who have grown extremely wealthy off the country's exports and much of the rest of the population, mired in poverty.

  • Negotiations on tariffs between EU and US to continue in Paris
    (3 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Paris - 3 June 2025
    1. Wide of participants and delegates in OECD building
    2. French Minister of Trade Laurent Saint-Martin talking to journalists
    3. SOUNDBITE (French) Laurent Saint-Martin, French Minister of Trade:
"The United States have unilaterally wished and decided an increase of tariffs that we still consider to be harsh and unfounded. Now that we are in this situation, we need to discuss because the United States is a historical partner, a commercial ally. We have never considered them otherwise. We continue to believe that the increase in tariffs, regardless of the target, is bad news for the global economy, including the American economy. And the recessive force this creates for the American economy is more significant than for the European economy. This is this dialogue we need to continue having between Commissioner (Maros) Sfecovic, who is indeed in charge since it is an exclusive competence of the European Commission, and all the representatives, including Jamieson Greer who is here in Paris."
    4. Saint-Martin talking to journalists
    5. SOUNDBITE (French) Laurent Saint-Martin, French Minister of Trade:
"We still have a few weeks to have this discussion and negotiation. Our position does not vary one iota. We want a positive agenda between Europe and the United States, as it is in the interest of each party. And we have also always said that if the discussion and negotiation do not succeed, Europe is capable of having countermeasures on American products and services as well. But for that, we need to continue the discussions. And the one with the mandate for European negotiation is Maros Sfecovic as the trade commissioner."
    6. German Economics and Energy Minister Katherina Reiche walking towards journalists
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Katherina Reiche, German Economics and Energy Minister:
"The negotiations are constantly going on so I can't speak about ongoing discussion and the details, but we all hope and we all do our best to end the conflicts as soon as possible. Any further restriction, any other ongoing certainty harms our economy and it harms the economy of the United States. That is also clear from the OECD report."
    8. Reiche leaving
    STORYLINE:
Negotiations on tariffs will continue in Paris on Wednesday as EU’s top trade negotiator, Maros Sefcovic, and his counterpart, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will meet on the sidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) ministerial meeting.
The EU could buy more liquefied natural gas and defense items from the U.S., and lower duties on cars, but it isn’t likely to budge on calls to scrap the value added tax — which is akin to a sales tax — or open up the EU to American beef.
The EU has offered the U.S. a “zero for zero” outcome in which tariffs would be removed on both sides for industrial goods including autos. Trump has dismissed that, but EU officials have said it’s still on ... [truncated]

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said on Tuesday his coalition government will become a caretaker administration after far-right lawmaker Geert Wilders pulled his ministers out of the Cabinet in a dispute about a migration crackdown.
The announcement completed a day of political turmoil in The Hague, sparked by Wilders' decision to turn his back on the ruling coalition.
Schoof said he would offer the resignation of ministers from Wilders’ Party for Freedom to the Dutch king.
He and the remaining ministers will remain in office in a caretaker capacity, he told reporters.
“A copy of the resignation request will, of course, also be sent to the House of Representatives and the Senate,” Schoof said at the press conference.
