    STORYLINE:
More than 100 inmates escaped from a prison and at least one was killed in a shootout in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi overnight after they were temporarily moved out of their cells following mild earthquake tremors, officials said Tuesday.
Kashif Abbasi, a senior police official, said 216 inmates fled the prison in the capital of Sindh province before dawn. Of those, 78 had been recaptured. No one convicted or facing trial as a militant is among those who fled, he said.
One prisoner was killed and three security officials were wounded in the ensuing shootout, but the situation has been brought under control, Abbasi said, adding that police are conducting raids to capture the remaining escapees.
Ziaul Hassan, the home minister of Sindh province, said the jailbreak occurred after prisoners were evacuated from their cells for safety during the earthquake.
The inmates were still outside of the cells when a group suddenly attacked guards, seized their weapons, opened fire and fled.
The superintendent of Malir prison, Arshad Shah, said the inmates fled toward a nearby residential area. According to residents, police later used mosque loudspeakers to alert them to the jailbreak and seek help in arresting the escapees.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who is not related to the prison official, asked the escapees in televised comments to voluntarily return, saying they had only been involved in minor crimes until that point. But he said they could face terror charges if they are arrested by police on the jailbreak charge.

Vote counting started Tuesday evening as South Koreans are choosing a new president to succeed the conservative who was ousted for imposing martial law briefly last year.
Because the election was held early due to Yoon Suk Yeol's removal, the winner will take office Wednesday without the typical two-month transition.
Surveys before the election indicated liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung is likely to win easily as voters remain frustrated over the martial law debacle and the main conservative candidate, Kim Moon Soo, struggles with moderates.

    STORYLINE:
Three British nationals accused of smuggling nearly a kilogram (over two pounds) of cocaine into Indonesia were charged Tuesday in a court on the tourist island of Bali.
They face the death penalty under the country's strict drug laws.
Convicted drug smugglers in Indonesia are sometimes executed by firing squad.
Jonathan Christopher Collyer, 28, and Lisa Ellen Stocker, 29, were arrested on Feb. 1 after customs officers halted them at the X-ray machine after finding suspicious items in their luggage disguised as food packages, said prosecutor I Made Dipa Umbara.
Umbara told the District Court in Denpasar that a lab test result confirmed that ten sachets of Angel Delight powdered dessert mix in Collyer’s luggage combined with seven similar sachets in his partner’s suitcase contained 993.56 grams (2.19 pounds) of cocaine, worth an estimated 6 billion rupiah (USD 368,000).
Two days later, authorities arrested Phineas Ambrose Float, 31 after a controlled delivery set up by police in which the other two suspects handed the drug to him in the parking area of a hotel in Denpasar. He is being tried separately.
The drugs were brought from England to Indonesia with a transit in the Doha international airport in Qatar, Umbara said.
The group successfully smuggled cocaine into Bali on two previous occasions before being caught on their third attempt, said official.
After the charges against the group of three were read, the panel of three judges adjourned the trial until June 10, when the court will hear witness testimony.
Both the defendants and their lawyers declined to comment to media after the trial.
About 530 people, including 96 foreigners, are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug-related crimes, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections’ data showed.
Indonesia’s last executions, of an Indonesian and three foreigners, were carried out in July 2016.
A British woman, Lindsay Sandiford, now 69, has been on death row in Indonesia for more than a decade.
She was arrested in 2012 when 3.8 kilograms (8.4 pounds) of cocaine was discovered stuffed inside the lining of her luggage at Bali’s airport.
Indonesia’s highest court upheld the death sentence for Sandiford in 2013.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says Indonesia is a major drug-smuggling hub despite having ... [truncated]

I do not criticize a president outside of our borders. No matter who it is and what party he belongs to or she belongs to. Second of all, I know that the people are sick and tired of the whining and the complaining, and the doom and gloom. They want heroes. They don’t want more complaints, that’s not what we want. So when they go that they are not wasting their time, they are focused in all of the worship that they do while they're there."

"It's not necessarily wrong for someone to engage themselves in social media once they're there. In fact, actually, it could be a reason for motivation for others. If someone gets to see it, as you see in the Hajj exhibition in the mosque, the reason why we did it, is so people can see it, they can take pictures and they can think: 'Hold on a second, when is going to be my turn to go for Hajj?' So again it's just creating that balance. So we say that there's certain times throughout the Hajj experience that people should be less on their devices and more spiritually connecting with their creator rather than being on the phone."

The three-day Eid al-Adha holiday begins on Friday in Lebanon and Muslims in the southern Lebanese port city of Sidon are already preparing for the feast.
Shoppers are buying new clothes for their children as well as sweets.
This holiday this years comes six months after the 14-month Israel-Hezbollah ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
Since the ceasefire went into effect in November, Israeli strikes have continued.
"Even if there’s a war, purchases go up during the Eid holiday. In recent years, there has been consistent interest in buying sheep," shepherd Fadi Lahouna said. "Of course, during the holidays, you can really feel a much stronger demand."
During the festive holiday, Muslims slaughter sheep or cattle and distribute some meat to poor people.
A joyous occasion celebrated by Muslims around the world, Eid al-Adha marks Ibrahim’s test of faith and his willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of submission to God.
Eid al-Adha, or the "Feast of Sacrifice," is the Islamic holiday that begins on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, during the Hajj season in Saudi Arabia.
Sweets vendor Mazen al-Afifi is hoping the holidays will bring some sales.

The Israel-Hezbollah conflict exploded into all-out war last September when Israel carried out waves of airstrikes and killed most of the militant group’s senior leaders.
Israeli attacks in Lebanon killed more than 4,000 people and displaced more than 1 million at the height of the conflict. On the Israeli side, dozens of people were killed and some 60,000 were displaced.

Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the United States over moves it said harmed Chinese interests after the U.S. accused China of violating an agreement on trade talks.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian’s comments Monday in Beijing is the latest of a series of ripostes delivered by Chinese government after the U.S. issued AI chip export control guidelines, stopped the sale of chip design software to China and threatened to revoke the visas of Chinese students.
Lin said it “severely violated the common understanding reached in Geneva and damaged China’s legitimate rights."
The U.S. and China agreed in early May to slash their massive recent tariff. The deal lasts 90 days, creating time for the two countries negotiators to reach a more substantive agreement.
