For us, we need only murram and you find out that the client doesn’t feel like maybe you are oppressing him. It’s very easy. He directs you where the murram is, you dig it and bring it to the site and you start construction.”

    STORYLINE:
Simon Tigawalana dreamed for years of doing something about the dirt floors in his small house, blaming them for making his family sick. But in a rural area in one of the world's poorest countries, making them over with concrete was simply out of reach.
Then a company called EarthEnable approached him to offer an alternative: a clay-based earthen floor that could give him a durable, sealed floor for less than half the cost of concrete. Tigawalana now has the new floor in two rooms and hopes to add it soon in the last room.
EarthEnable, which seeks to upgrade housing across Africa, has been promoting and installing the clay-based floors in Uganda since 2017.
Besides eliminating dust that can irritate breathing, they're credited with reducing infestations of jiggers — a parasitic flea that can burrow into the skin and lead to pain, itching and infection. Uganda's health ministry says poor hygiene due to dirt floors contributes to such infestations.
The first step in building the floor is digging and leveling the surface. Then murram — local red soil rich in iron and aluminum oxides — is mixed with sand and water and then compacted. After two weeks of drying time, masons use wooden floats to smooth and further compact the surface.
Next is pasting: applying a fine clay screed to further smooth the surface and prepare it for a final sealant, a flaxseed-based varnish that hardens into a durable plastic-like resin.
A typical floor costs around 240,000 Uganda shillings (about $65), which EarthEnable says is about 70% cheaper than concrete. Buyers can pay in installments.

    STORYLINE:
After months of political turmoil, South Korea will elect a new president this week to succeed conservative Yoon Suk Yeol, who was ousted over his brief but shocking imposition of martial law.
Surveys suggested liberal Lee Jae-myung, running for the Democratic Party, is heavily favoured to win Tuesday's snap election, riding on a wave of public disappointment of Yoon’s martial law debacle in December.
The main conservative candidate, Kim Moon Soo, wants a come-from-behind victory, but observers say his refusal to directly criticize Yoon made it difficult for him to narrow the gap with Lee.
Four other politicians are running for the presidency, including Lee Jun-seok of the small conservative New Reform Party, who has categorically rejected Kim's request to field a unified candidate between them to prevent a split in conservative votes.
The winner will be sworn in as president on Wednesday without the typical two-month transition period.
The new leader faces the urgent tasks of trying to heal the deep domestic divide over Yoon's action as well as focusing on U.S. President Donald Trump's America-first policy and North Korea’s advancing nuclear programme.
When asked about Lee's plan to address the U.S. tariffs and trade policy, a senior spokesperson for the Democratic Party, Cho Seung-rae, described the South Korean-US alliance as "solid".
“The foundation of the (South) Korea-US alliance is solid and has to be advanced even further," he said.
"But advancement of the alliance is not just a matter of emphasizing the value of the alliance. Whenever administrations change in the US and South Korea, their policies can also change," he added.

  • Police at scene after FBI and law enforcement respond to 'terror attack' in Boulder, Colorado
    (1 Jun 2025)

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Boulder, Colorado - 1 June 2025
    1. Police at scene
    STORYLINE:
Several people were injured and some may have been set on fire at an outdoor mall in Boulder, Colorado, police said. Police said a man was taken into custody in the attack that the FBI immediately described as a “targeted terror attack."
Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn told reporters Sunday evening that it was too early to discuss a motive but that witnesses were being interviewed.
“It would be irresponsible for me to speculate on motive this early on,” he said.
The Boulder attack took place at a popular pedestrian mall known for attracting tourists and college students. On Sunday, demonstrators with a volunteer group called Run For Their Lives had gathered to call for the release of hostages who remain in Gaza. The group has multiple chapters across the world that regularly meet to walk to advocate for hostage releases.
Sunday's attack also occurred as law enforcement authorities in the U.S. grapple with a spike in antisemitic violence. And last week, a man was arrested on charges in the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staffers and shouted “Free Palestine” as he was being led away by police.
Boulder police said there were “several victims” in the attack. The injuries authorities found were consistent with reports of individuals being set on fire, Redfearn said, adding that injuries ranged from serious to minor.
Multiple blocks of the pedestrian mall area were evacuated by police. The scene shortly after the attack was tense, as law enforcement agents with a police dog walked through the streets looking for threats and instructed the public to stay clear of the pedestrian mall.

Thousands of people marched Sunday in Mexico City to protest judicial reform, chanting slogans against the ruling party and elections they do not support.
"I hope the Mexican people wake up and don't get carried away by this pretense that social programs are unfortunately used to manipulate people and have electoral clients," said José Wilfrido Barroso, a judicial worker protesting.
Mexico held its first-ever judicial elections on Sunday, stirring controversy and sowing confusion among voters still struggling to understand a process set to transform the country's court system.
Voter turnout seemed to significantly lag, something expert warned of in the lead up to the historic elections due to the mindboggling array of unfamiliar choices and the fact that voting for judges is new.
Some voting centers in Mexico City, the Gulf coast state of Veracruz and the southern state of Chiapas opened with only a handful of people waiting, though lines started to form later in the day.
Mexico's ruling party, Morena, overhauled the court system late last year, fueling protests and criticism that the reform is an attempt by those in power to seize on their political popularity to gain control of the branch of government until now out of their reach.
Now, instead of judges being appointed on a system of merit and experience, Mexican voters will choose between some 7,700 candidates vying for more than 2,600 judicial positions.
Critics of the reform planned protests in various cities across the country.
"Why did I come? Because I don't agree with this mockery of the Mexican people," said
Rafael "Juanito" Acosta, activist protesting in Mexico City.

    7. Supporters following the speech of Rafal Trzaskowski
    STORYLINE:
Supporters of Warsaw mayor and presidential candidate Rafał Trzaskowski celebrated on Monday, while exit polls showed the two candidates in a statistical tie with the race still too close to call in the deeply divided nation.
The results could set the course for the nation’s political future and its relations with the European Union.
A first exit poll showed liberal Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski with a slight lead over conservative historian Karol Nawrocki, but two hours later an updated “late poll” showed Nawrocki winning 50.7%, more than Trzaskowski with 49.3%
The polls have a margin of error and it was still not clear who the winner was.
Though the final result was still unclear with the two locked in a near dead heat, both men claimed to have won in meetings with their supporters in Warsaw.
“Euphoria, euphoria. Rafal has won. Everyone was waiting for this, he has won over a bandit, I’m really happy about that, young people were waiting for that," said 23-year-old Trzaskowski supporter Hubert Maciejewski.
The final results were expected Monday.
