  • Panic, anguish among Harvard's foreign students after Trump's administration moved to revoke visas
    (23 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Cambridge, Massachusetts – 23 May 2025
    1. Tilt-up view of the steeple of the Memorial Church of Harvard University
    2. Close up of banners at Harvard
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Walid Akef, Harvard Graduate Student from Egypt:
"What I'm going to lose? Dreams, hopes, and 20 years of my life coming to Harvard, and I'm not exaggerating. I planned for it for 15 years. I did two masters. I did one master in Spain, another master degree in England, and then I came to Harvard, I learned Spanish before English, and now I speak Italian, I know French, so I learned all these languages in order to come here, so I will lose years of my life, which is the biggest thing. Secondly, of course, I will lose the degree. It's my sixth year. I worked here for six years. So, this is not a small thing. And most importantly, that my wife is on J2 visa. She came here with me. And I'm expecting a baby. So if this happens, and my wife, in a month from now, she will not be able to travel. So, this absolutely disastrous. So, I'm just going to lose not just stability, but also lose my dreams and then lose, I don't know, like, years of my life."
    4. Various of tourists posing for photos on the bronze statue of John Harvard, the founder of Harvard University
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Aleksandra Conevska, Harvard Graduate Student from Canada:
"Personally, I think it's, it's very disorienting. So, I moved to the United States in 2020 originally, and for a long time I wanted to move here to invest in my education and, hopefully, to work here as a professor. And so I have mentally been planning out a life here, and now it feels very disorienting to have to try to think about whether or not I'm welcome here or whether there is a stable future here. And when it comes to giving back to my community and investing, that's the thing that gives me purpose here – working with local campaigns, working with local organizing groups in addition to my research. And now it feels like uncertain whether I should still be investing in those places. And at what point I should basically, like, rethink my entire life plans which have been embedded in this country, which I love this country. I adore it. And living here has been one of the greatest changes I've ever made in my own life. And so I think mentally and personally there's just this kind of inner turmoil and a confusion about what to do next, especially as our American friends they do in Cambridge and in Massachusetts, it does feel like there's lots of support for international students living here and working here."
    6. Various of tourists posing for photos on the bronze statue of John Harvard
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Aleksandra Conevska, Harvard Graduate Student from Canada:
"I have, I have a dear friend who is Russian and has not felt safe to go back to Russia for years now. And so for this, for him, it creates, I think, an existential question almost, because he has no real form of stability where the United States was that source for him. I think for me, again, I have Canada to go back to. I have some friends who are Chinese and they don't feel safe in their country either, and that's a similar thing to my Russian friend. So I think some people, I hear them and they're packing up and they know that they might be giving in, but what they seek in their life is stability."

  • Lawyers react as Kardashian robbers found guilty in Paris but won't face prison time

(Reporter: Is this something you expected?)
    "No."
    5. Various of Abbas leaving courthouse
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Gabriel Dumenil, Attorney for Yunice Abbas:
"We are very happy with this decision. This decision is very fair. It's a fair decision. Mr Abbas is not sentenced to jail. He is sentenced to jail, but he is not going to jail and he is coming back to his family. This is very important for us. It's very justice for us."
    7. Corridor of courthouse
    8. SOUNDBITE (French) Leonor Hennerick, Kim Kardashian's Attorney:
"Madame Kardashian has been informed of the decision. She is satisfied. Justice has been served and that was her only wish that justice is served and now that that has been done she can move on. Thank you."
    9. Interior of court corridor
    10. SOUNDBITE (French) Franck Berton, Attorney for defendant Aomar Aït Khedache:
"Our client is leaving as a free man from the courthouse. I'd like to say this is a magnificent decision that consecrates a spirit of appeasement in a case that was a heavy one over three weeks where the court heard the gravity of the facts, the principle of the convicted, as well as our client and his son return home tonight and not being incarcerated. We - myself and my colleague - have been able to achieve this result. We requested that our client not be bricked in for life. We were listened to by the Paris court and I'd like to say that we are happy with this verdict rendered tonight and this is an important day."
    11. Attorney Chloe Arnoux leaving court with her client defendant Aomar Aït Khedache
    12. SOUNDBITE (English) Chloe Arnoux, Attorney for defendant Aomar Aït Khedache:
"The verdict is really good for us, we think, because it's eight years with five years that he has already done and three years of probation and we are really relieved even if we are exhausted and the client is relieved as well because it proves that justice can be served but not with going to prison for big sentences."
    13. Depature shots
    STORYLINE:
A Paris court on Friday found the ringleader and seven other people guilty in the 2016 robbery of Kim Kardashian, but acquitted two others.
Aomar Aït Khedache, 69, the ringleader, got the stiffest sentence, eight years imprisonment but five of those were suspended.
Three others got seven years, five of them suspended.
Three more got prison sentences ranging from five to three years, mostly or completely suspended, and an eighth person was found guilty on a weapons charge and fined.
With time already served in pretrial detention, none of those found guilty will go to prison and all walked out free.
The chief judge said that the defendants’ ages - six are in their 60s and 70s - and their health issues weighed on the court’s decision to impose sentences that he said weren’t "very severe."
Still, the chief judge said that Kardashian had been traumatized by the Oct. 2, 2016, jewel heist in her hotel during Fashion Week.
Kardashian, who wasn't present for the verdict, said in a statement issued afterward that she was “deeply grateful to the French authorities for pursuing justice in this case."
Khedache on Friday asked for “a thousand pardons,” communicated via a written note in court.

    STORYLINE:
The Federal Aviation Administration says that the flight restrictions that have been in place at New Jersey's largest airport will remain in place into mid-June.
The rule announced Tuesday will cap the number of arrivals and departures at Newark Liberty International Airport at 28 apiece per hour.
That's in line with the limits imposed after half a dozen air traffic controllers went on trauma leave following a tech outage April 28.
The controllers were unable to see or communicate with the planes for over a minute. It happened again May 9.
Despite the restrictions, the Newark airport filled up on Friday as more people made their getaways for the long Memorial Day weekend.
New Jersey travelers who spoke with the Associated Press said that they arrived for their flights even earlier in anticipation of larger crowds and potential issues.
By mid-June, the controllers on leave will be scheduled to return.
The FAA is working to address the technical problems that caused the outages.

Several Jewish organizations and Chicago officials held a press conference Friday to condemn the fatal shooting of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, Israeli Embassy staffers, on Wednesday night as they were leaving an event at a Jewish museum.
The suspect, Elias Rodriguez, is a Chicago resident.
Speaking at the press conference, David Goldenberg, Midwest Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called the attack "an act of antisemitism."
According to court documents, Elias Rodriguez, 31, shouted “Free Palestine” as he was led away after his arrest.
He faces charges of murder of foreign officials and other crimes and did not enter a plea during a perfunctory court appearance.
Speakers at the press conference called for greater safety and security for Jewish communities.
"It is a shame that none of us will go to a wedding, a funeral, a bar mitzvah, or a regular day school program without seeing some form of security meet us at the gate," said Dan Goldwin, Chief of Public Affairs Officer for the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Chicago.

(Reporter: "Do you think justice has been done? Do you think the verdict is fair?")

Reporter: Do you think you your client is gong to be able to move on with his life? Move on ?? (indecipherable)
Stasse: Our client is a hard-working man, and I think that the only thing that he wants is to go back to his private and daily life.

Reporter: What do you think of the result of the verdict? Is it fair? Is it what you expected?
    4. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Mohand Ouidja, lawyer of plaintiff Abderrahmane Ouatiki
(Reporter: "What do you think of the result of the verdict? Is it fair? Is it what you expected?")
"We don't expect anything because we are a victim. We expect the truth. My English is not good, but a sentences. A sentence and what is important for our client is to win the time but he's lost nine years, nine years and it's really difficult for him. But now it's really important to say that French justice give example of (inaudible) We are—respect the statutes of our client, and this social statutes don't force now with this trial the sentence. That's all."
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Arthur Vercken, lawyer of Gary Madar
(Reporter: "Is it a fair verdict?")
"Yeah it's a completely fair verdict for me of course. We are waiting since 9 years for this decision. We are fighting until The Supreme Court and frankly it's a big day for us, yeah. And for justice.
Reporter: How did your client feel?
Ouidja: "Well he was crying during the decision because he did not believe it. We had so many deceptions and a victory at the end it's odd in a certain manner."

    6. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Chloe Arnoux, lawyer of defendant Aomar Ait Khedache:
The verdict is really good for us, what we think, because it's eight years, with five years that he has already done, it's three years of probation.(...) And we are really relieved, even if we're exhausted, and the client is relieved as well, because it proves that justice can be served, but not with going to prison for big sentences.
(Reporter: "Will they be able to move on with their lives now?")
"Hopefully, he will be able to cure himself and to move on with his life after nine years with a (indecipherable) above his head.
(Reporter: "You were concerned that they were going to, in fact, get a life sentence (unclear)?")
"We were concerned about that, but the result is that it's not the case. And we were really hopeful, and we managed to prove to the court that it was not a good decision."
