    STORYLINE:
Russia and Ukraine began a major prisoner exchange Friday, swapping hundreds of soldiers and civilians in the first phase of an exchange that was a moment of cooperation in otherwise failed efforts to reach a ceasefire in the 3-year-old war.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the first phase of the exchange brought home 390 Ukrainians, including soldiers and civilians, with further releases expected over the weekend that will make it the largest swap of the war.
Russia's Defense Ministry said it had received the same number from Ukraine.
“It’s very important to bring everyone home,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram, thanking all who worked to secure their return and pledging to continue diplomatic efforts to make more exchanges possible.
Dozens of relatives of prisoners cheered and chanted “Thank you!” as buses carrying the freed captives arrived at a medical facility in Ukraine's Chernihiv region.
The men, some with expressionless faces and others unable to contain their emotions, got off the buses wrapped in Ukrainian flags for joyful reunions.
Kyiv and Moscow agreed in Istanbul last week to the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side in their first direct peace talks since the early weeks of Russia’s 2022 invasion.
That meeting lasted only two hours and brought no breakthrough in U.S.-led efforts efforts to stop the fighting.
The swap took place at the border with Belarus in northern Ukraine, according to a Ukrainian official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.
The exchange, which would be the latest of dozens of swaps since the war began and the biggest involving Ukrainian civilians at one time, didn't herald any halt in fighting.
Battles continues along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line, where tens of thousands of soldiers have been killed, and neither country has relented in its deep strikes.

    STORYLINE:
A man charged with stalking Jennifer Aniston and crashing his car through the front gate of her home has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial, but he demanded a second opinion at a court hearing Thursday.
Jimmy Wayne Carwyle a 48-year-old from Mississippi, appeared while in custody behind glass at a Hollywood courthouse that specializes in mental health cases. He had a long, gray beard and wore a thick, blue smock that jails use for suicide prevention.
A county-appointed psychiatrist who evaluated Carwyle found the defendant incompetent, Deputy Public Defender Robert Krauss told the judge as he stood near his client with glass separating them. But Krauss said Carwyle, as is his right, would like an evaluation from a different psychiatrist.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Cavaluzzi ordered the reevaluation and set another hearing for May 29.
Krauss declined comment outside court, as did the prosecutor handling the case and an attorney observing the hearing on behalf of Aniston.
Prosecutors allege Carwyle had been harassing the “Friends” star with a flood of voicemail, email and social media messages for two years before driving his Chrysler PT Cruiser through the gate of her home in the wealthy Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles on May 5, causing major damage.
He pleaded not guilty to felony stalking and vandalism at his first court appearance, where a judge paused the criminal proceedings so he could undergo the psychological evaluation.
Carwyle remains jailed, but he is under a judge's order not to contact or get near Aniston.
Authorities said Aniston was home at the time of the gate crash, but he did not come into contact with her. A security guard stopped him in her driveway until police arrived. No one was injured.
Carwyle also faces an aggravating circumstance of the threat of great bodily harm. If convicted, he could get up to three years in prison. If Carwyle is found incompetent again, the judge could order him to be sent to a state mental hospital for treatment and ongoing evaluation.
Other than asking for the protective order for Aniston, prosecutors have not given their position on Carwyle's competency status, and did not speak at Thursday's hearing.
Aniston became one of the biggest stars in television in her 10 years on NBC's “Friends.” She won an Emmy Award for best lead actress in a comedy for the role, and she has been nominated for nine more. She currently stars in “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+.

  • Delegates leave after fifth round of negotiations in Rome over Iran's nuclear program
    (23 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Rome - 23 May 2025
    1. Motorcade leaving Omani Embassy compound
    2. Second motorcade leaving
    STORYLINE:
Iran and the United States made “some but not conclusive progress” Friday in a fifth round of negotiations in Rome over Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear program, the talks' Omani mediator said.
The remarks by Badr al-Busaidi suggested the negotiations between the two longtime enemies would continue even as the talks run up against their toughest challenge: Trying to find middle ground between American demands that Iran stop enriching uranium while Tehran insists its program must continue.
“The fifth round of Iran US talks have concluded today in Rome with some but not conclusive progress,” al-Busaidi wrote on X. “We hope to clarify the remaining issues in the coming days, to allow us to proceed towards the common goal of reaching a sustainable and honourable agreement.”
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi after the talks told Iranian state television that al-Busaidi presented ideas that will be conveyed to the two nations' capitals “without creating any commitments for either side."
The U.S. was again represented in the talks by Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff and Michael Anton, the State Department’s policy planning director.
They had no immediate comment afterward, with the Iranians saying Witkoff left early from the negotiations at the Omani Embassy in Rome’s Camilluccia neighborhood.
The talks seek to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of some of the crushing economic sanctions the U.S. has imposed on the Islamic Republic, closing in on half a century of enmity.

“Ever since early April when President Trump rolled out his big tariff plan, markets have been pretty unsettled by all of this. They don't like the idea of tariffs. It could really disrupt supply chains and prices for Americans. Walmart said recently that it's going to have to raise prices on its products, which is something that Walmart does not do lightly at all. … So today, we had new threats from President Trump to put tariffs on Apple for its iPhones, unless it onshores, if it brings production of iPhones back to the U.S. This would probably be incredibly expensive and very, very difficult for Apple to do. So, it's not clear whether this threat will be made good. But if it does, it means trouble for Apple for this very commonly used product.”

“So this week, the House narrowly passed a budget bill that includes a lot of tax cuts. The bill is very likely to add trillions of dollars to the U.S. government's debt. This could likely make worse a problem that the markets are already feeling quite upset about, which is the U.S. government's decreasing ability to service its debt. It's piling on more and more debt, and currently the U.S. enjoys this privilege of being able to borrow at good rates from global investors. And the more debt is piled on, then the more difficult this gets for the government, the more the government has to pay out to borrow money. But also, we Americans have to pay more, also us, to borrow money, because of the government's higher rates.”

"So, I would say robotics is part of AI, really. If you look back at the early days of AI, they were all about using robots to do amazing things. The things that we are seeing today that are on the market for AI are mostly things that do not involve physical presence. They don't have to act in the real world. They don't have to touch things. So that's what robotics does, is it really brings this virtual world together with our physical world, and that's a lot harder."

    STORYLINE:
The world's leading conference on robotics and automation took to the showroom floor in Atlanta, offerrng a showcase of robots that walk, crawl, run, fly, do push-ups and play soccer.
Many of the robots at the 2025 International Conference on Robotics and Automation featured human-like features, blinking and winking at passersby and conversing in various language, all thanks to advances in computing power and AI, according to conference co-chair Nancy Amato.
"So for example, all of the advances in AI are really due to advances in computing because we now can process all of this data fast enough. We couldn't do that before. And the exact same algorithms that we were developing when I was in graduate school and they kind of petered out, now those same simple things are giving us these amazing results," Amato told The AP.
The robots held a parade past hundreds of conference attendees on Thursday, deftly rolling and strolling and waving as they made their way to an arena where they spun, jumped and demonstrated their abilities. For all the moving metal, rubber and plastic parts, there were no collisions or mishaps, thanks to sensors that guided their every move.

    STORYLINE:
As Venezuelans head to a Sunday election, they are again being used as political pawns. Opposition factions are urging abstention while the ruling party aims to tighten its grip on power.
The election for members of the National Assembly, governors and other regional offices will be the first to allow broad voter participation since last year’s presidential contest, which President Nicolás Maduro claimed to have won despite credible evidence to the contrary.
The contest comes as the opposition’s most recognizable figure, María Corina Machado, remains in hiding to avoid arrest and most other leaders are in exile or prison due to the government's repressive measures unleashed after the July election.
A nationwide poll conducted between April 29 and May 4 by the Venezuela-based research firm Delphos showed that only 15.9% of voters expressed a high probability of voting on Sunday.
Of those, 74.2% said they would vote for the candidates of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela and its allies, while 13.8% said they would vote for contenders associated with two opposition leaders who ignored Machado’s call to boycott the elections.
Some opposition politicians are urging voters to participate, despite the difficulties. Among those is former lawmaker Juan Requesens, who spent two years in jail.
"Some brothers, comrades, and friends believe that to defend the 28th and to fight for Venezuela, it is better not to vote. We believe that the vote as a tool for expression, struggle and change must always remain alive", said Requesens to the Associated Press.
Also running is Nicolás Maduro's son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, who is standing for a second term as a lawmaker.
The ruling party-loyal National Electoral Council will oversee Sunday’s election for state legislators, 285 members of the unicameral National Assembly, and all 24 governors, including the newly created governorship purportedly established to administer Essequibo, a region long under dispute between Venezuela and neighboring Guyana.
