    STORYLINE:
Several explosions were visible in Gaza's night skies late Tuesday, as Israel pressed ahead with its new military offensive despite mounting international pressure.
Earlier, health officials said airstrikes had killed at least 85 Palestinians.
Israeli officials said they also allowed in dozens more trucks carrying aid.
Two days after aid began entering Gaza, the desperately needed new supplies have not yet reached people in Gaza, which has been under an Israeli blockade for nearly three months, according to the United Nations.
Experts have warned that many of Gaza's 2 million residents are at high risk of famine.

  • Gym trainer recalls sessions with Cardinal Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV

    4. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Valerio Masella, Pope Leo XIV's trainer at Omega gym:
    ++SOUNDBITE PARTIALLY COVERED++
“The first day, there are charts with exercises, with speeds and slopes to be done, and I started with the ones indexed clearly for a man of his age. However, for him it was just like he didn't even feel the work. When we were supposed to get to a substantial level of perceived fatigue that was almost a warm-up for him. Let's say it was a little bit ineffective on him and so I directly adapted the program by making it a little bit harder."
    5. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Francesco Tamburlani, owner of Omega gym:
    ++SOUNDBITE PARTIALLY COVERED++
“When the name of the pope, the name of the pope was announced my phone rings and my son tells me ‘Dad it's Robert. But Robert who? Our member’. I heard behind him the staff of the gym joyfully cheering. Because he is a member of our gym, this moved us, filled us with joy. We were happy to have him in our gym as a member.”
    6. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Valerio Masella, Pope Leo XIV's trainer at Omega gym:
    ++SOUNDBITE PARTIALLY COVERED++
"In general, I always heard words of appreciation for everything from him. I don't think I've ever heard him make a comment about anything that wasn't positive. He always had positive words for everything, for the weather, for the city, for the people, but, also in my regard, he said he felt good, good in the gym. But everything around him in general even regarding the other members of the gym, he always said positive things about everything.”
    7. People working out
    8. Exterior of Omega gym
    STORYLINE:
Valerio Masella used to meet Robert Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV, twice a week for an hour-long training session at the Omega gym.
“For him the training chart suited for his age was just a warm-up,” said Valerio Masella, the gym trainer who took care of Pope Leo XIV, when he was still a little-known American cardinal who had arrived in Rome from Peru.
Masella, a professional gym trainer, was reluctant to define what age the Pope's training program corresponded to, but he estimated that Prevost “did work typically assigned to a 50-55 year old man.”
The Omega gym is a small but well-equipped gym much frequented by nuns, priests, monsignors and employees of the Vatican, but also by the fashionable people of the bourgeois Prati district.
Pope Francis brought Robert Prevost, 69, to the Vatican from Peru in 2023 to serve as the powerful head of the office that vets bishop nominations from around the world, one of the most important jobs in the Catholic Church.
It comes as Pope Leo XIV vowed on Sunday to work for unity in a polarized Catholic Church and world, as history's first American pope offered a message of healing during an inaugural Mass in St. Peter’s Square before an estimated 200,000 pilgrims, presidents, patriarchs and princes.
Leo officially opened his pontificate by taking his first popemobile tour through the piazza, a rite of passage that has become synonymous with the papacy’s global reach and mediatic draw.
The 69-year-old Augustinian missionary smiled and waved from the back of the truck to people waving U.S., Peruvian and other national flags, and stopped to bless some babies in the crowd.

Mexico is heading to a judicial election on June 1 - it's first ever in it's history - where more than 2,600 contenders are vying for 881 positions from Mexico’s Supreme Court down to district courts across the country.
Those on the June 1 ballots won a lottery after being screened by committees made up of people from the three branches of government.
In order to qualify, they had to have a law degree, at least five years of professional practice, write an essay and collect letters of recommendation from friends and colleagues.
Foreign governments, including the United States, and civil society organizations in Mexico criticized the change, warning that it would lead to a politicization of the judiciary and weaken its independence.
The political majority behind the contentious reform justify it as the way to root out corruption by making judges accountable to the people.

  • Ataques en Gaza matan al menos a 85 personas mientras Israel permite la entrada de ayuda
    (20 May 2025)

    STORYLINE:
A New Hampshire town’s attempt to force a bakery to remove or alter its painting that shows sunbeams shining down on a mountain range of doughnuts, a muffin, a cinnamon roll and other pastries is unconstitutional, a judge ruled in a First Amendment dispute.
The town of Conway infringed on the free speech rights of bakery owner Sean Young, U.S. District Judge Joseph Laplante ruled Monday, following a one-day trial in February.
He ordered the town to stop any efforts at enforcing its sign code regarding the mural painted by high school students atop Leavitt's Country Bakery, mentioning a “complete disconnect between what the ordinance purports to regulate and the town’s enforcement, as well as the illogical way it applied and explained that enforcement” to Leavitt's.
“I’m thrilled that the students’ artwork can remain up, I’m thrilled that my First Amendment rights have been vindicated, and I’m thrilled that the community can continue to enjoy the beautiful piece of art,” Young said in a statement. “I think our mural is a wonderful depiction of everything that makes the Mount Washington Valley such a great place to live.”
When the mural went up in June 2022, it attracted a lot of compliments and visitors, including one from a town zoning officer.

    STORYLINE:
French police announced they had retrieved the bust of The Doors singer Jim Morrison, 37 years after it was stolen from the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
The Paris Prefecture Anti-fraud Unit posted a photo of the graffiti covered sculpture, saying it had found it amid an unrelated investigation.
Some of the many visitors who trekked up the cemetery's cobbled walkways to see Morrison's grave on Monday welcomed the news, reminiscing the days when people gathered at the Paris cemetery to dance and play music in the wake of the singer's death in 1971.
Sam Burcher, an artist from London, remembered bringing strawberries to the musicians and poets celebrating their idol's life.
"It was buzzing," she told the Associated Press.
"There were people partying, smoking, music, dancing, and then I brought strawberries and kind of gave them out to everyone. Obviously I was like 20 or, you know, young, and it was just such an amazing experience."
Most insisted the bust should find its way back atop the gravestone, despite the risks.
"The amount of people who would rush in here just to see the bust to take pictures of it, it would be incredible," predicted Paris tour guide Jade Jezzini.

    STORYLINE:
Authorities have arrested an Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office maintenance worker in connection with the escape of 10 jail inmates.
The office said in a statement Tuesday that Sterling Williams admitted he turned the water off in a cell before the men slipped away through a hole behind the toilet early Friday.
Williams told authorities an inmate threatened to stab him if he didn't help.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson last week told reporters her agency had suspended three employees pending an investigation.
Four of the fugitives have been apprehended and six remain at large.
