    STORYLINE:
A New Hampshire town’s attempt to force a bakery to remove or alter its painting that shows sunbeams shining down on a mountain range of doughnuts, a muffin, a cinnamon roll and other pastries is unconstitutional, a judge ruled in a First Amendment dispute.
The town of Conway infringed on the free speech rights of bakery owner Sean Young, U.S. District Judge Joseph Laplante ruled Monday, following a one-day trial in February.
He ordered the town to stop any efforts at enforcing its sign code regarding the mural painted by high school students atop Leavitt's Country Bakery, mentioning a “complete disconnect between what the ordinance purports to regulate and the town’s enforcement, as well as the illogical way it applied and explained that enforcement” to Leavitt's.
“I’m thrilled that the students’ artwork can remain up, I’m thrilled that my First Amendment rights have been vindicated, and I’m thrilled that the community can continue to enjoy the beautiful piece of art,” Young said in a statement. “I think our mural is a wonderful depiction of everything that makes the Mount Washington Valley such a great place to live.”
The community of more than 10,000 people in the White Mountains draws skiers, nature lovers and shoppers. Some residents want regulations enforced as they worry about overdevelopment in the tourist town.

“The first day, there are charts with exercises, with speeds and slopes to be done, and I started with the ones indexed clearly for a man of his age and however for him it was just like he didn't even feel the work. When we were supposed to get to a substantial level of perceived fatigue that was almost a warm-up for him, so let's say it was a little bit ineffective on him and so I directly adapted the program by making it a little bit harder."
(Reporter: "We can say he was training with a chart of a man of which age?")
Masella: "I would say… it is difficult to make an estimate however I could tell about 50/55.”

Especially the exercise bike was let's say quite strong, we used to put quite a bit of resistance on the pedal just like strong uphill and then once we finished this part which took up about half an hour, we would pass to the machines down at the bottom of the room to train the upper part a little bit.”
    8. Masella training upper body
    9. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Valerio Masella, Pope Leo XIV's trainer at Omega gym:
“We were working mostly on the aerobic part, so the cardiovascular part, and also the respiratory system and then we moved from there to a more posture-related part and the musculoskeletal part so we worked a little bit on the whole body.”
    10. Various of Masella working out
    11. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Valerio Masella, Pope Leo XIV's trainer at Omega gym:
"He felt healthy, he felt better (after training), but in general I always heard words of appreciation for everything from him. I don't think I've ever heard him make a comment about anything that wasn't positive. He always had positive words for everything, for the climate, for the city, for the people, but also in my regard, he said he felt good, good in the gym. But everything around him in general even regarding the other members of the gym, he always said positive things about everything.”

  • Sparks shares their approach to making music after 28 albums

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beverly Hills, Calif. - 8 April 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Russell Mael, Recording Artist:
"Ron will either come into the studio here with a fully fleshed out song ,or the other way of working is we just start out here with nothing and just sort of start winging it and seeing if we can shape it into something that's a song. But after 28 albums, the challenge is just trying to find new ways to kind of retain the universe that Sparks has created, but to obviously try to make it fresh for people that have been following the band for a long time. And the other thing is also just to try to make an album that maybe doesn’t sound like it’s from a band with a 28-album-long history, so that if someone were to pick up the new “Mad!” album, that they would just um... and this was the first exposure they had to Sparks, that it would be as poignant and provocative in all sorts of ways as anything we’ve done in our past."

    4. Wide of worker boarding up burned restaurant
    STORYLINE:
One of Rhode Island's most famous restaurants has been damaged after a fire broke out early Tuesday morning.
Union Fire District Steve Pinch told reporters firefighters arrived at 3:45 a.m. to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the Matunuck Oyster Bar in South Kingston. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. No injuries have been reported.
A phone message seeking additional details was left at the the Union Fire District of South Kingstown.
The oyster bar has operated a seven-acre aquaculture operation on a local salt pond since 2002, and later opened the restaurant on the waterfront in 2009 where it quickly became a “pond-to-table” destination for diners. The restaurant regularly offers oyster farm tours for the public.
The oyster bar's littlenecks and chourico dish was lauded one of the “ Best Dishes ” of the year in 2023 and USA Today listed the location on its “ Restaurants of the Year ” list in 2024.
“Everybody in town either works or knows somebody who works at the oyster bar, or comes here and enjoys the oyster bar, so we are just saddened for all of the employees and the owner,” Pinch told WPRI-TV.
The fire comes just days before Memorial Day weekend, marking the unofficial kick-off to summer and a boost in business for New England's seaside businesses.
“I’m grateful there were no injuries and thankful to first responders for their quick response at a treasured local institution,” U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, a Rhode Island Democrat, said in a statement.

    STORYLINE:
The Indian army this week gave a guided tour of some of the key sectors along the Line of Control in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
At one military post, soldiers scrambled to load artillery guns and demonstrated firing precision rounds across the border as troops carried out drills.
The ceasefire reached between India and Pakistan early this month seems largely intact but also gives an impression of constant strain.
The Indian army says it remains on razor-sharp alert to “respond with force” at the slightest provocation.
At another military post perched at 3,000 meters, the army swung into action, preparing to launch mortar attacks on hostile targets as part of another drill.
A surveillance drone hovered above while patrols equipped with sophisticated weaponry monitored barbed-wire fences for infiltration attempts by militants and suspected terrorists.
The militaries of India and Pakistan were engaged in one of their most serious confrontations in decades early this month when India struck targets inside Pakistan it said were affiliated with militants responsible for the massacre of 26 tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir last month.
The hostilities rose as both sides fired precision weapons and missiles to mainly target each other’s military installations and airbases.

    STORYLINE:
Dozens of people gathered overnight in the street where one of the Mexican naval cadets who died when their training vessel hit the Brooklyn Bridge lived.
América Yamilet Sánchez, 20, was in the final year of her studies at the naval academy when she was killed aboard the naval teaching vessel Cuauhtemoc on Saturday.
A small crowd gathered near her home in the early hours of Tuesday, many holding white roses and their cell phones to illuminate the way for the hearse carrying her body.
Naval officers accompanied her arrival around midnight at her home in Veracruz’s state capital Xalapa.
Sánchez was the pride of her family, a standout student and athlete, who had already distinguished herself — scoring top marks in her naval systems engineering studies.
She was a squadron leader and among those selected for the special group that accompanied President Claudia Sheinbaum at her inauguration.
"My family is devastated, but we are going to move forward. My daughter was an example to everyone. She is going to be remembered. She deserved the best," Cosme Sánchez said, holding a photograph of his daughter in her dress uniform.
At the naval academy she won medals and represented the institution nationally in open water swimming competitions.
Her most recent honor was being awarded a place aboard the Cuauhtemoc, which planned to visit 22 ports in 15 countries.
On Saturday, she sent her parents photos, told them she loved them and spoke excitedly of the ship’s next stop: Iceland.
Sánchez was high in one of the Cuauhtemoc’s three masts Saturday night when it slid out of its dock in New York, authorities told her family.
It’s a ceremonial practice to greet and pay respects entering and leaving ports.
U.S. investigators laid out a timeline Monday showing the Cuauhtemoc was underway for less than 5 minutes before its masts crashed into the historic span, and radio calls indicating it was in distress went out only 45 seconds before the deadly collision.
The Brooklyn Bridge escaped major damage but at least 19 of the ship’s 277 sailors needed medical treatment, according to officials.
The body of the other sailor killed, 23-year-old Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos, was also returned to Mexico on Monday.
