    STORYLINE:
Dozens of Palestinians in Khan Younis lined up at a charity kitchen to obtain food on Friday in a scene that quickly turned chaotic as the enclave entered its third month of Israel’s aid blockade.
Charity kitchen workers were seen struggling to push people back into line as children behind a metal partition screamed and cried out for food.
The crowd surged forward, pressing against the partition and lunging toward the large pots of rice to grab whatever they could.
One child used his hand to scoop the last bits of rice from the nearly empty pot, while holding his food container with the other hand.
"Our only hope was that Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East would result in solutions and somehow open crossings to bring in humanitarian assistance as soon as possible into the Gaza Strip, but the visit is almost over and not a drop of water or bread entered Gaza,” said Saqer Jamal, a displaced man from Rafah who was at the kitchen.

    STORYLINE:
Arab leaders called on Saturday for an immediate end to Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip and to allow aid into the Palestinian territories without conditions.
During the 34th Arab League summit in Baghdad, they promised to contribute to the reconstruction of the territory once the war stops.
In March, an emergency Arab League summit in Cairo endorsed a plan for Gaza’s reconstruction without displacing its roughly 2 million residents.
“We demand an immediate end to the Israeli aggression on Gaza and an end to hostilities that are increasing the suffering of innocent civilians,” said the final statement issued after the summit that was read by Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein. “Humanitarian aid should be allowed into all areas in Palestine without conditions.”
Saturday’s summit was attended by Arab leaders including Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi.
The statement said Arab leaders support Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ call for the holding of an international peace conference that leads to a two-state solution.
The Arab League summit comes two months after Israel ended a ceasefire reached with the Hamas militant group in January.
In recent days, Israel has launched widespread attacks in Gaza and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed a further escalation to pursue his aim of destroying Hamas.

    STORYLINE:
More than 2,000 people were ordered to evacuate rural areas north of Argentina's capital after several days of heavy rainfall flooded highways, farmlands, and entire neighborhoods.
The city of Campana, 46 miles (75 kilometers) north of the capital Buenos Aires, was one of the most affected.
Residents took to the streets and avenues of Campana's San Cayetano neighborhood in kayaks and boats to help those most affected by the flooding.
"I have two brothers helping people to get out of their houses; my other brother was also rescued after staying on the rooftop of his house all night." said Guillermo López.
"Now they went back to see if they could recover some items, to avoid losing all. It's an ugly situation,"
A bus with 44 passengers was stranded overnight for more than 10 hours on one of the roadways connecting Buenos Aires to the interior.
Between 8 and 15 inches (300 and 400 mm) of rain has fallen in the past 72 hours when the average monthly precipitation is about 1.7 inches, officials said. More wet weather followed by heavy wind is expected and authorities are urging residents, especially the 275,000 near the city of Zarate along the Parana River, to remain indoors.
Authorities likened the storm to one in March that killed at least 16 people.

    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Craven, locomotive engineer:
"We're just asking for fair — a fair contract We would like, like for the company to come to the table to be fair."
    ++EDIT ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
Picketers in red shirts that said “United We Bargain Divided We Beg” carried signs and blared music not far from a NJ Transit train yard in the suburban Philadelphia town of Morrisville on Saturday.
The locomotive engineers’ strike began Friday at the rail system with 350,000 daily riders and left commuters either working from home or searching for other ways to travel across the state or over the Hudson River to New York City.
Talks aimed at settling a strike between train engineers and New Jersey’s huge commuter railroad will pick up on Saturday and continue Sunday.
New Jersey Transit CEO Kris Kolluri spoke Saturday at Newark’s Broad Street Station, saying the agency is preparing for the workweek commute by “surging” buses to help commuters at train stations. However, he cautioned the buses can’t handle the entire volume of the commuter rail system.
Bill Craven, a 25-year veteran engineer, described the mood among union members positively. He said they usually don't get to congregate because they're typically passing each other on the rails at 100 mph.
“Most of us would much rather be running trains. That's what we do for a living. We don't want disrupt our lives, other people's lives, but it comes to a point where we haven't had a raise in six years,” he said.
The walkout comes after the latest round of negotiations on Thursday didn’t produce an agreement.
It is the state’s first transit strike in more than 40 years and comes a month after union members overwhelmingly rejected a labor agreement with management.

    STORYLINE:
Storm systems sweeping across parts of the U.S. Midwest and South left at least 23 people dead on Saturday.
In Kentucky, some 14 people were killed by severe weather, and the death toll is likely to rise, according to Gov. Andy Beshear.
Kayla Patterson, her husband and their five children huddled in a tub in their basement in London, the county seat, as the tornado raged around them.
“You could literally hear just things ripping in the distance, glass shattering everywhere, just roaring like a freight train," she recalled Saturday. “It was terrible.”
The family eventually emerged to the sounds of sirens and panicked neighbors.
While the family's own home was spared, others right behind it were demolished, Patterson said.
Shane Eldridge said he and his family took shelter in the laundry, "and the lights went out and then we heard like a freight train noise come through and we heard the roof getting sucked off our house."
The storm was the latest severe weather to cause deaths and widespread damage in Kentucky.
Two months ago, at least 24 people died in a round of storms that swelled creeks and submerged roads.

  • Cast of Linklater's 'New Wave' leave the venue after premiere at Cannes Film Festival
    (17 May 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Cannes, France - 17 May 2025
    1. Various of cast of "New Wave" including Guillaume Marbeck, Aubry Dullin, Zoey Deutch, Laurent Petain, Michèle Halberstadt and director Richard Linklater leaving
    STORYLINE:
American filmmaker Richard Linklater brought his appropriately French-language “Nouvelle Vague,” about Jean-Luc Godard and the French New Wave, to the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, where it is screening in competition for the Palme d'Or.
The cast of the comedy features Guillaume Marbeck as Godard; Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg; Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alix Bénézech as Juliette Gréco.
Written by Holly Gent, Laetitia Masson, Vincent Palmo Jr and Michèle Pétin, “Nouvelle Vague" ("New Wave") emulates Godard's style, to tell the story of the making of his iconic 1960 crime drama "Breathless," starring Belmondo and Seberg.
The multiple Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind "Boyhood" and the "Before.." trilogy, Linklater last made the Cannes lineup in 2006, when his "Fast Food Nation" was in competition for the Palme, and his "A Scanner Darkly" was selected for Un Certain Regard.
    The festival runs May 13-24.
