    12. Close of shattered glass
    STORYLINE:
Local residents who fled the border villages of Indian-controlled Kashmir returned find their homes damaged and riddled with shrapnel after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire.
The militaries of India and Pakistan had been engaged in one of their most serious confrontations in decades since May 7, when India struck targets inside Pakistan it said were affiliated with militants responsible for the massacre of 26 tourists last month in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Pakistan has denied any links to the attackers.
After India's strikes in Pakistan, the two sides exchanged heavy fire along their de facto borders, followed by missile and drone strikes into each other’s territories, mainly targeting military installations and airbases.
Mohammad Shafi and four family members were having dinner in their kitchen when they heard explosions and ran outside on the night on May 8.
They had just managed to reach the road when they saw a blast damage the kitchen they had been dining in. They ran down a slope and hid among trees.
Shafi returned to access the damage on Sunday after the ceasefire between the two countries on May 10.
“Our children’s books, uniforms, ration, gas, everything is finished. Now I have no place to live,” Shafi told The Associated Press.
Most residents left Gingal for the town of Baramulla about 40 km (25 miles) south, to seek shelter.
Abdul Qayoom said the intense shelling from last week had traumatized them.
“If there is ceasefire, then it should be permanent. This is my request. And to save ourselves if the government can provide us with bunkers,” he said.
Nasreena Begum rushed out on the night of May 8, leaving her special-needs son behind as he was too heavy to be carried.
She was tormented but was relieved to find him safe at home the following morning.
“That time people were only thinking about themselves, where would I have got help from,” Begum said.
About 100 miles south, the usually bustling tourist spot of Pahalgam is now quiet, its residents facing a different challenge. It was here when, on April 22, militants killed 26 tourists in the worst assault in years targeting civilians in the restive region.

  • Smoke seen rising and explosions heard in Gaza as Israel continues offensive
    (17 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Gaza Strip - 17 May 2025
    1. Smoke following strike in Gaza Strip, UPSOUND Explosion
    2. Various of smoke rising
    STORYLINE:
Smoke was seen rising and explosions heard in the Gaza Strip on Saturday as Israel continued its offensive on the enclave.
The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said Saturday the bodies of 153 people killed by Israeli strikes have been brought to hospitals over the past 24 hours.
The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251. Most of the hostages have since been released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. Israel has rescued eight and recovered dozens of bodies.
Israel's offensive has killed over 53,200 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants. Israel says it has killed around 20,000 militants, without providing evidence.
The war has destroyed vast parts of Gaza and most of its food production capabilities. The war has displaced around 90% of the population, with hundreds of thousands of people living in tent camps and bombed-out buildings.

“For now, we have to do what the delegations were able to agree on yesterday. This is, of course, first of all, to carry out a swap of a thousand (prisoners) for a thousand and exchange the very list of conditions that I spoke about and that my colleague (Russian delegation head Vladimir) Medinsky spoke about yesterday.”
    ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Saturday that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy is possible “upon reaching certain results in the form of agreements of the two sides.”
“At the same time, when signing the documents that the delegations have to agree on, for us the main and fundamental thing remains who exactly will sign these documents from the Ukrainian side,” Peskov added.
Asked whether the Russia had contacts with the United States following the negotiations, he said that if Putin and Trump “consider it appropriate to hold a conversation” the media will be informed.
“For now, we have to do what the delegations were able to agree on yesterday. This is, of course, first of all, to carry out a swap of a thousand (prisoners) for a thousand and exchange the very list of conditions that I spoke about and that my colleague (Russian delegation head Vladimir) Medinsky spoke about yesterday,” Peskov said.
The first direct Russia-Ukraine peace talks since 2022 ended after less than two hours Friday, and while both sides agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners each in what would be their biggest such swap, they clearly remained far apart on key conditions for ending the fighting.
Both sides also discussed a ceasefire and a meeting between their heads of state, according to chief Ukrainian delegate, Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.

    STORYLINE:
Israel continued its attack on Gaza on Saturday as regional leaders were due to meet in Baghdad at the annual summit of the Arab League, with the war in Gaza expected to once again loom large.
Smoke could be seen on the skyline in northern Gaza this morning.
Arab leaders endorsed in March at an emergency summit in Cairo a proposed plan for reconstruction of the Gaza Strip without displacing its roughly two million residents.
Saturday’s summit comes two months after Israel ended a ceasefire reached with the militant Hamas group in January.
Israel has launched widespread attacks in Gaza in recent days and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed a further escalation of force to pursue his aim of destroying Hamas.

In his first trip outside of Rome as pope he went to visit an Augustinian church, the same order he belongs to, in the town of Genazzano just south of Rome that is devoted to another title of the Virgin Mary, in this case the Madonna del Buon Consiglio (Madonna of Good Counsel). And on his drive back to Rome he stopped to pray at the tomb of Pope Francis who wanted to be buried next to his favorite Madonna, the Salus Populi Romani in the Basilica of St. Mary Major.”

    ++PART OVERLAID BY SHOTS 7 - 10++
“So you might be wondering just how many Virgin Marys are there, and why is this veneration so important to Christians and Catholic in particular, from the popes on down to the ordinary faithful. Well, first of all there is of course only one Mary, she is the mother of Jesus, and the mystery of how she can be both human and the mother of the son of God is absolutely central to Christian dogma. As a matter of fact her oldest historical title is in Greek “Theotokos” which means literally that, the mother of god, and it took centuries of theological debate to establish that. But there are many other titles of veneration to the Virgin Mary, some of them are linked to events in her life, for example the Assumption, which is celebrated on August 15, and in many countries including Italy, Greece and others is still a major holiday, everybody is on vacation on that day, even atheists and secular people. Then there are titles that are connected to specific apparitions, for example in the Americas: the Virgin of Guadalupe, centuries old apparition in modern day Mexico, in Europe: Our Lady of Fatima, in Portugal: Our Lady of Lourdes more recently in France, also Marian apparitions are celebrated. And then there are local events, there are multiple titles, that may be connected to specific places, a specific icon, a specific veneration. For example, to go back to the Augustinians, they also administer the Church of the Basilica of St. Augustine in downtown Rome, and here there are multiple ones, the Madonna dei Pellegrini, a very famous painting by Caravaggio, there is a much venerated Madonna del Parto that many women who are expecting a child come to to pray for a safe labor.”

"In light of the current development cuts, localization is the way to go. The idea of locals taking charge of the change that they want is the way to go. I think that it's so great that we have had large organizations such as USAID providing support but locals understand and can maintain what is going on."

    STORYLINE:
Joseph Kariaga and his friends once lived the “gangster life” in Nairobi’s Mathare slum, snatching phones, mugging people and battling police. But when Kariaga's brother was shot dead by police, the young men took stock.
"We changed after people, many dead,” said Kariaga, now 27. "People are dead, my friends, so many, even my brother."
Now the men are farmers with a social mission.
Nearly a dozen of them founded Vision Bearerz in 2017 to steer youth away from crime and address food insecurity in one of Kenya’s poorest communities.
Despite challenges, Vision Bearerz makes a modest but meaningful community impact, including feeding over 150 children at lunches each week.
Some residents praise the group and call the men role models.
Amid cuts to foreign funding by the United States and others, experts say local organizations like this may be the future of aid.
Vision Bearerz works on an urban farm tucked away in the muddy streets and corrugated-metal homes that make up Mathare, one of Africa's most populous slums.
Estimates say about a half-million people live in this neighborhood of less than two square kilometers.
Some 2 million people, or 60% of Nairobi’s population, live in informal settlements, according to CFK Africa, a non-governmental organization that runs health and poverty reduction programs in such neighborhoods and is familiar with Vision Bearerz' work.
Lack of infrastructure is a key challenge in these communities, which are growing amid sub-Saharan Africa’s rapid urbanization and booming youth population, said Jeffrey Okoro, the group’s executive director.
Polluted soil and water rationing made it a tough start.
