  • Zelenskyy says he will be waiting for Putin in Turkey on Thursday for talks and that Trump invited
    (13 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
++CLIENTS: RESENDING EDIT TO EXTEND SOUNDBITE - TRANSLATION ALSO IMPROVED IN SHOTLIST++
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Kyiv, Ukraine - 13 May 2025
    1. Wide of Zelenskyy entering
    2. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
"We spoke with President Erdoğan, and I will have a meeting with him in the capital of Turkey — that is Ankara. It will take place on Thursday May the 15th. We will be waiting for a meeting with Putin in Turkey, so that Russia does not manipulate the cities and say that Putin is not ready to fly to Ankara but only willing to fly to Istanbul — I want to state right away that if Putin flies to Istanbul instead of the capital, I have already sent a signal to the president, and the Turkish side is ready, that President Erdoğan and I will fly to Istanbul. That is, in any case, we will do everything to make this meeting happen. If Putin is truly ready — not just in the media but in real life — to meet. And then, at the level of leaders, we will do everything to agree on a ceasefire, because it is with him that I must negotiate a ceasefire, as only he can decide on it. We have invited President Trump to join. I do not know the decision of the President of the United States of America, but in any case, if he were to confirm his participation, I believe it would give an additional push for Putin to fly in."
    ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday that he will be waiting for Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in the Turkish capital this week to conduct face-to-face talks about the more than three-year war amid heavy pressure from the U.S. and European leaders to reach a settlement.
Putin hasn't yet said whether he will be at the talks, which U.S. President Donald Trump has urged the two sides to attend as part of Washington’s efforts to stop the fighting.
Zelenskyy told reporters in Kyiv that he will be in Ankara on Thursday to conduct the negotiations. He will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the two will wait for Putin to arrive, he said.
Zelenskyy said he would “do everything to agree on a ceasefire, because it is with (Putin) that I must negotiate a ceasefire, as only he can decide on it.”
Zelenskyy said that if Putin chooses Istanbul to hold the meeting, then both leaders will travel there from Ankara.
Trump has been invited to the talks, because "it would give an additional push for Putin to fly in,” but Trump hasn't confirmed his presence, Zelenskyy said.
The American president will still be on his four-day Middle East trip on Thursday.

    (13 May 2025)
    RESTRICTIONS SUMMARY:
++CLIENTS: RESENDING EDIT TO REMOVE FLASH FRAME++
    AGENCY POOL
    Beijing, China - 13 May 2025
    1. Wide of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as they deliver statements to the press after bilateral meeting
    2. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin): Xi Jinping, Chinese President
"Today's world is far from peaceful, and there are more and more new challenges. The Global South grew exponentially. It has become the backbone of resisting the negative trend of unilateralism and protectionism. It is also a vital force for the development of the international order in a more just and rational direction."
    3. Wide of Xi and Lula
    4. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin): Xi Jinping, Chinese President
"As important representatives of the global South, both China and Brazil believe that there is no winner in the tariff war or trade war. Protectionism is not the right answer to the challenge. China and Brazil will further uphold the principles of free trade and the multilateral trading system, create an open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory international cooperation environment and maintain the momentum and vitality of global economic growth."
    5. Wide of Xi and Lula
    6. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese): Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil
“In recent months, the world has become more unpredictable, more unstable, and more fragmented. China and Brazil are determined to raise their voices against unilateralism and protectionism. The unwavering defense of multilateralism is an urgent and necessary task.”
    7. Wide of Xi and Lula with officials and press
    8. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese): Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil
“Overcoming the senselessness of armed conflicts is also a precondition for development. The common understandings between Brazil and China for a political resolution to the crisis in Ukraine provide a basis for comprehensive dialogue that could restore peace to Europe. Humanity is diminished in the face of the atrocities committed in Gaza. There will be no peace without an independent and viable State of Palestine, living side by side with Israel.”

    9. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese): Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil

  • Chopard unveils the 78th edition Palme d'Or trophy
    (13 May 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Cannes - 13 May 2025
    1. Medium of Palme d'Or being unveiled
    2. Close tilt up on the Palme d'Or
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Caroline Scheufele, artistic director/co-president of Chopard:
"Every year the Palme is handmade. It's a 100% sustainable, ethical gold and each, each leaf is done by sort of by hand and each year another artisan of the Atelier gets to do it because you can you can sort of see the different hands of each one and it sits on a ...it sits on a rock crystal which comes from Austria so this is cut like an emerald-cut diamond. It's never one like another because it has all these sort of white veins in it and it has some different reflections. Sometimes it's a bit more transparent, sometimes it's more opaque, like not broken, like you know how you have deep polished glass, so actually no Palme looks like the other."
    4. Medium on the Palme d'Or
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Caroline Scheufele, artistic director/co-president of Chopard - on how much responsibility they have for the Palm:
"Well, we make sure it gets delivered because it is the most sort of wanted award in the world, not because of its value but because of what it means to cinema and obviously we are responsible until it gets to the Palais so we are not saying how it got here or where it is. And we had already an issue where one year was blocked by customs. So every day they call us, 'Is the Palme here?' I said, 'yeah, sure, it's here.' But it wasn't here, I was like. And I explained to the head of head of Head of Customs that it's, first of all, it had this value, but that was taken care of. But the second thing I said 'it's all about the Palme in your cultural event. You can check on the TV in Cannes, I need this Palme.' So finally everybody got involved and the day of... the day when the Palme was given, the crate arrived in Cannes."
    6. Various of jewels
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Caroline Scheufele, artistic director/co-president of Chopard - on how celebrities choose their pieces to wear on the red carpet:
"It goes either way. Some we know fine at once. Some are sort of preselected, and once they get here and they see the different pieces, they change their mind. There is a lot of pre-work with the stylists. And of course, it has to somehow match also the couture. And actually, this is the third year I've launched Caroline's Couture, so I really do our own dresses to match the jewellery, because sometimes the dresses are too much for a very important piece. But it's often really on the moment, here on the terrace or in their suites, because they see something else and they fall in love. So then it gets very complicated for the stylists, because they have to run around and get a new dress."

    STORYLINE:
Chopard unveiled the latest Palme d'Or trophy that is to be given to the winner of the 78th Cannes Film Festival. It is the 70th palm to be given since the prize was called the Grand Prix between 1946-1954.
The jewelry house has been an official partner to the movie event fest since 1998 and every year they produce the trophy - each year slightly different than the other.
Handmade by a different artisan each year, the trophy has 19 leaflets in 18 karat sustainable gold and is mounted on a crystal rock cushion, cut like a diamond.

  • China urges US to hold 'equal, respectful and mutually beneficial' talks amid 90-day trade truce
    (13 May 2025)
    RESTRICTIONS SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beijing - 13 May 2025
    1. Wide of news conference
    2. Wide reporters
    3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin): Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson
“Fentanyl is a problem for the US, not China, and the responsibility lies with the US itself. The US has ignored China's goodwill and unjustly imposed fentanyl tariffs on China, severely impacting China-US dialogue and cooperation in the field of drug control and seriously harming China's interests.”
    4. Reporters
    5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin): Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson
“If the US sincerely wants to cooperate with China, it should stop smearing and shifting blame onto China and engage in dialogue with China in an equal, respectful, and mutually beneficial manner.”
    6. Various of news briefing
    STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday renewed its calls on the U.S. for dialogue “in an equal, respectful, and mutually beneficial manner” after the two countries reached an agreement to a 90-day truce in their trade war.
The two countries said Monday that they plan more talks on resolving trade disputes.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said that the U.S. has agreed to drop its 145% tariff rate on Chinese goods to 30%. And China has agreed to lower its 125% rate on U.S. goods to 10%.
The 30% levy that America is now imposing on Chinese goods includes an existing 20% tariff intended to pressure China into doing more to prevent the synthetic opioid fentanyl from entering the United States.
At a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian dismissed a question about the progress of the latest bilateral talks on fentanyl and reiterated that the responsibility for drug abuse lies with the U.S. itself.
“The US has ignored China's goodwill and unjustly imposed fentanyl tariffs on China, severely impacting China-US dialogue and cooperation in the field of drug control and seriously harming China's interests,” Lin insisted.
“If the US sincerely wants to cooperate with China, it should stop smearing and shifting blame onto China and engage in dialogue with China in an equal, respectful, and mutually beneficial manner,” he added.
But the de-escalation in President Donald Trump's trade wars did nothing to resolve underlying differences between Beijing and Washington.
The deal lasts 90 days, creating time for U.S. and Chinese negotiators to reach a more substantive agreement.
But the pause also leaves tariffs higher than before Trump started ramping them up last month. And businesses and investors must contend with uncertainty about whether the truce will last.

    STORYLINE:
Mourners held funeral prayers on Tuesday after an Israeli strike on a hospital in the Gaza Strip killed a journalist.
Hassan Eslaiah, who was targeted in an earlier strike, has been described by Israel as a Hamas militant posing as a journalist.
Israel says he took part in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that ignited the war. He and another individual were killed in the overnight strike, according to Nasser Hospital.
Eslaiah was at the facility receiving treatment from severe burns from the earlier strike, Dr. Ahmed Alfarra said.
Israel said it struck militants who were operating inside the hospital, without identifying them.
An Israeli strike just outside the hospital in April set a media tent ablaze and killed two people, including a local reporter.
Eslaiah was among six other journalists who were wounded in that strike. The Israeli military said Eslaiah was the target.
Eslaiah had occasionally contributed images to The Associated Press and other international media outlets as a freelance journalist, including on Oct. 7. The AP has not worked with him for over a year.
