  • Kim Kardashian's lawyer on her testimony in Paris robbery trial
    (13 May 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Paris - 13 May 2025
    1. Mid shot of lawyers walking through a corridor in the Paris courthouse during the Kim Kardashian robbery trial
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Rhodes, attorney for Kim Kardashian:
"I'm Miss Kardashian's lawyer from America. My name is Michael Rhodes. She's very tired. She flew in last night, had very little sleep. So we've told her that she should just go and relax and call it a day."
    3. Wide of Rhodes speaking to media
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Rhodes, attorney for Kim Kardashian:
"I think it was a heroic effort on her part. She testified this was a devastating experience for her. It fundamentally changed the arc of her life and the way she's lived her life ever since. She was so distraught at the time that she was not even able to come back here and and to be in Paris - a city that she's always loved and felt very free and comfortable with. But I think she was very committed to it for a variety of reasons, including the fact that she herself wants to follow in her father's footsteps to become a lawyer. She's committed to the justice system in all its forms. And she felt that when she was asked to come, she readily said 'Yes I will come and I will tell what what happened to me.' And I think it will help her and also Simone - who testified this morning - get past these events finally - get closure because it has been a very long time."
    5. Wide of media gathered in courthouse
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Rhodes, attorney for Kim Kardashian:
(Reporter: "How difficult or easy was that for her?")
Rhodes: "I'm not sure it was that difficult. I think she was very generous about it. It's a hard thing to ask somebody to forgive a violent crime - and make no mistake about it, it was a very violent crime. She was essentially naked, bound on a bed. Strange men are touching her. They're pulling her. She thinks in her mind that she's being raped or murdered, and so you try to have generosity in your heart. And if someone asks you point blank, please forgive me for what I did to you - and she did, but deep inside, she's still their victim."
    7. Wide Rhodes and others walking away from media
    STORYLINE:
Kim Kardashian's attorney says it was a "heroic effort" to testify Tuesday inside a Paris courtroom about the 2016 jewelry heist that changed her life.
The last time Kardashian saw the men that police say robbed her, she was locked in the marble bathroom while masked assailants stole more than $6 million in jewelry. On Tuesday, nearly a decade later, she faced them again — this time, from the witness stand.
Her testimony marked the emotional climax of a trial that has gripped France and reignited debates about the cost of fame and what it means to live in public.
"She testified this was a devastating experience for her. It fundamentally changed the arc of her life and the way she's lived her life ever since," said Michael Rhodes, Kardashian's attorney. "She was so distraught at the time that she was not even able to come back here and and to be in Paris - a city that she's always loved and felt very free and comfortable with. But I think she was very committed to it for a variety of reasons, including the fact that she herself wants to follow in her father's footsteps to become a lawyer. She's committed to the justice system in all its forms. And she felt that when she was asked to come, she readily said 'Yes I will come and I will tell what what happened to me.' • Kim Kardashian leaves Paris court after testifying about being bound, held at gunpoint during robber
    (13 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Paris - 13 May 2025
    1. Kim Kardashian leaving Paris court after testifying
    STORYLINE:
Kim Kardashian was seen leaving a Paris courthouse on Tuesday where she testified against a group of men accused of tying her up at gunpoint and robbing her of an estimated $6 million in jewelry.
Dressed in black with defiant sparkling diamonds, Kardashian on Tuesday stood across from her mother, Kris Jenner, in the heavily secured courtroom.
Her voice trembled as she thanked French authorities for “allowing me to share my truth.”
She described how the attackers arrived at her hotel disguised as police officers, dragging the concierge upstairs in handcuffs.
One attacker demanded she turn over her diamond ring valued at $4 million on the bedside table. “He said, ‘Ring! Ring!’ and he pointed to his hand,” she recalled.
French prosecutors say the assailants — most in their 60s and 70s — were part of a seasoned criminal ring.
Two defendants have admitted being at the scene.
One claims he didn’t know who she was.
Twelve suspects were originally charged. One has since died. Another was excused due to illness.
The French press dubbed them les papys braqueurs — “the grandpa robbers” — but prosecutors insist they were no harmless retirees.
They face charges including armed robbery, kidnapping and membership in a criminal gang, offenses that carry the potential for life imprisonment.

Marari Kalan, Punjab, India– 13 May 2025
    1. Various of women crying
    2. SOUNDBITE (Punjabi) Rajwant Kaur, woman whose husband died after drinking toxic liquor:
“Don’t know from where he came drunk in the dark and laid down on the cot. I thought, he is just doing that. From the room, he went out and lay down in the courtyard. I gave him medicine and called the family. They called a doctor who pronounced him dead.”
    3. Wide of signboard reading (English) “Marari Kalan”
    STORYLINE:
At least 14 people died and six were hospitalized in critical condition after consuming toxic liquor overnight in northern India, police said Tuesday.
Seven people were arrested on allegations they supplied the toxic liquor in five villages around 19 kilometers (12 miles) from the city of Amritsar in northern Punjab, senior police officer Maninder Singh said.
Police have launched a crackdown to destroy the network of spurious liquor supplies in the area following the incident, Singh said.
The local administration deployed medics to the villages to check on people who drank the contaminated liquor, said Sakshi Sawhney, a senior government official in Amritsar.
Those showing symptoms are being shifted to hospitals to ensure the death toll doesn’t rise, said Sawhney.

  • Senators respond to Trump's plan to accept free Air Force One replacement from Qatar
    (13 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Washington – 13 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Mark Kelly, (D) Arizona:
“Gift, bribe, call it what you want. I imagine the government of Qatar would expect a return on this investment in the President of the United States. So, this is ridiculous to think that he can take this airplane.”
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Rick Scott, (R) Florida:
“Well, as far as  I'm concerned is the safety of the President. I mean, Qatar's not, in my opinion, a great ally. I mean they support Hamas, and so what I'm worried about is the safety of President of the United States.”
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Thom Tillis, (R) North Carolina:
“Everybody needs to know that Air Force One is not like every other Boeing and it's going to have to be put through a lot of paces and probably every square inch analyzed before I think the President should consider it his primary means of transportation.”
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Dick Durbin, (D) Illinois:
“This is not only an outrageous example of corruption, which this administration is famous for, but it is also completely negligent and, as far as I'm concerned, reckless. To think that Air Force One, where the president is asked to function as our commander in chief in a situation room making life or death decisions, is on a plane given to us by a foreign government with 200 miles of wiring in it, is an indication to me of complete recklessness on the part of the president.”
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Tommy Tuberville, (R) Alabama:
“You're talking about the Department of Defense accepting it?”
    (Reporter: Yes.)
“Yeah, okay. I got no problem with that. I mean, it's made in America, made by Boeing. I don't think that, President Trump, he doesn't need a bribe, okay? And I think a lot of people are saying that. That has nothing to do with it. He needs a newer plane, 40 years old. I'm sure there will be some money exchanged hands, probably trying to pay for it, trying to make it official. You know, we don't like handouts, but at the end of the day, they're trying to be nice with an American-made product. Let's go for it.”
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Josh Hawley, (R) Missouri:
“It's worth the investment here in this country to build a big, beautiful jet here in the United States, so if he wans my advice, that will be it.”
    ++ENDS SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
For President Donald Trump, accepting a free Air Force One replacement from Qatar is a no-brainer.
But Trump’s plan threatens to turn a global symbol of American power into an airborne collection of ethical, legal, security and counterintelligence concerns.
Trump tried to tamp down some of the opposition by saying he would donate the plane to a future presidential library after his term ends. Democrats are united in outrage over the plan.
Even some of the Republican president’s allies have expressed concerns.
Sen. Rick Scott, (R) Florida, says he is concerned about the president’s safety.
“I mean, Qatar's not, in my opinion, a great ally. I mean they support Hamas, and so what I'm worried about is the safety of President of the United States,” Scott said.
But Sen. Tommy Tuberville, (R) Alabama, is fine with the Department of Defense accepting it.
“He needs a newer plane, 40 years old. I'm sure there will be some money exchanged hands, probably trying to pay for it, trying to make it official. You know, we don't like handouts, but at the end of the day, they're trying to be nice with an American-made product. Let's go for it,” Tuberville said.

    STORYLINE:
China's president Xi Jinping welcomed Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday, during the Brazilian leader's state visit to China.
The two leaders walked along a large red carpet laid out in front of Beijing's Great Hall of the People, towards a reviewing platform in the middle of the plaza.
Xi and Lula then inspected the troops, walking along the band's front lines and past a group of children waving flowers and Chinese and Brazilian flags.
The first ladies of China and Brazil, Peng Liyuan and Rosângela da Silva, stood nearby to observe.
Xi and Chinese officials then sat at a table opposite Lula and some of his delegation for a bilateral meeting, with both leaders speaking.
The Brazilian leader spoke against tariffs saying they had never been "a solution for peace" and in some cases had brought about wars.
"I think Brazil and China are giving an example that it is possible to build another world if we know how to share what each one and every of us has that is positive to help another country," Lula said.
In a separate room, Xi and Lula then sat at a table observing officials and executives signing documents, with around eight deals announced.
The two leaders applauded after each document was signed.

    STORYLINE:
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday that the forum between China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, known as China-CELAC, was a "full success."
Speaking to reporters at a news conference, Wang said that China and the participating countries will implement "more than 100 projects"
China has "unilaterally initiated 20 measures to support LAC (Latin American and Caribbean) countries' development," Wang added.
Wang stressed the importance of solidarity between China and LAC countries.
Speaking earlier to the China-CELAC Forum, Chinese leader Xi Jinping announced plans to build closer ties with Latin America through political, economic, academic and security exchanges.
China’s trade with the region has been growing rapidly, exceeding $500 billion for the first time last year, as it imported more farm products such as soybeans and beef, energy resources such as crude oil, iron ore, and critical minerals.
China is moving to strengthen its alliances with other countries, presenting a united front with Latin American leaders a day after China and the U.S. agreed to a 90-day truce in their tariffs stalemate.
China’s leaders have positioned the world’s second-largest economy as a reliable trade and development partner.

  • Zelenskyy says Putin’s absence from Turkey talks would signal he’s not ready to end the war
    (13 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Kyiv, Ukraine - 13 May 2025
    1. Wide of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at briefing
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
"If Putin will not come (to Turkey), or if ceasefire will not be supported by Russians, by Putin, exactly by him, so it mean only one thing that Russia is not ready for any kind of negotiations. No time to play games on the technical level. It means that they are not supportive of all these things. It means only one thing that we need to be more strong, united and tough on them and today I see only one thing - sanctions. Of course, of course if I will have connection (contact) with President Trump, of course not only sanctions and I will tell him: You see that we need sanctions have to be powerful and we need a little bit time for this when sanctions will have influence, and that's why this time I want to be very supportive by your Ministry of Defense, and your own personal decisions to support Ukraine with all the things, with all the instruments what we need to defend, and to stay strong."
    3. Zelenskyy
    4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
"I believe that if Putin does not arrive and plays games, it is the final point that he does not want to end the war. This means that all the promises, sober and clear promises made by the United States, Europe, and leaders of other countries must be fulfilled. Otherwise, you will not force Russia to take steps towards any form of de-escalation. This means that there will be sanctions. I can only expect, at least a very powerful package, from the United States of America in the sanctions against Russia."
    5. Zelenskyy leaving
    STORYLINE:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he will be waiting for Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Turkey this week to conduct face-to-face talks about the more than three-year war, adding that "if Putin does not arrive and plays games, it is the final point that he does not want to end the war."
Putin hasn't yet said whether he will be at the talks, which U.S. President Donald Trump has urged the two sides to attend as part of Washington’s efforts to stop the fighting.
Zelenskyy told reporters in Kyiv that he will be in Ankara on Thursday to conduct the negotiations. He will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the two will wait for Putin to arrive, he said.
The Ukrainian leader also said that if Putin doesn’t show up, European and U.S. leaders should follow through with threats of additional and heavy sanctions against Russia.
Trump has been invited to the talks but hasn't confirmed his presence, Zelenskyy said.
The American president will still be on his four-day Middle East trip on Thursday.
Washington has been applying strong pressure on both sides to come to the table since Trump took office in January with a promise to end the war.
Military analysts say that both sides are preparing a spring-summer campaign on the battlefield, where a war of attrition has killed tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said Monday that Russia is “quickly replenishing front-line units with new recruits to maintain the battlefield initiative.”
