    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen A. Smith, sports TV personality, actor:
"I've been a part of 'General Hospital' for seven years. Very fortunate and blessed. Frank Valentini is the executive producer. Maurice Benard and Laura Wright and Steve Burton are the stars. They're all genuine, dear friends of mine who have helped me along the way. I'm not an actor. I didn't go to school, train for it or anything like that. I'm somebody that they felt had a natural gift but when I walk in there, they school me every single day on what will make me better. And I'm incredibly grateful for any opportunity that I have to be in their presence and to learn from them along with my buddy Eric Braeden who stars as Victor Newman on 'Young and the Restless' is a dear friend of mine as well. When you have friends in your life like that, it just says a lot about what you're doing, how you're going about doing it, because they're not going to support people who are not worthy of it. So I recognize that, I'm appreciative of it, and I'm very, very grateful and thankful for it."

  • Dominican Republic’s bill to regulate freedom of expression draws protest by journalists
    (13 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - 13 May 2025
    1. Various of journalists and members of media protesting
    2. ACD Media Group reporter Rosalba Escalante speaking to media
    3. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Rosalba Escalante, ACD Media Group reporter:
“From now on, we are no longer willing to remain silent or stay quiet because all dictatorships worldwide begin with the censorship of the press. And the censorship of the press begins with violations that initially seem insignificant but have disastrous results.”
    4. Protesters holding signs reading (Spanish): “Freedom of Expression” and “No mistreatment of the press”
    5. El Nuevo Diario reporter, Jaime Rincón, at protest
    6. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jaime Rincón, reporter at El Nuevo Diario:
“We have seen how politicians repeatedly try to curtail the freedoms we have, not only journalists, cameramen, photo reporters, but it is a freedom that all Dominicans have because you, with access to the Internet, have the right to express yourselves through any social media.”
    7. Pan of military personnel at protest
    STORYLINE:
Dozens of people, including prominent journalists, marched on Tuesday through the Dominican Republic ’s capital to decry a bill that critics warn could lead to government censorship.
The bill, which is expected to be approved, calls for the creation of an independent regulator that would oversee content published on social media and digital news sites, focusing especially on anything that would violate the privacy of children or someone’s dignity.
But critics say such a regulator could overreach.
Opponents of the bill say it is the latest measure under the administration of President Luis Abinader that appears aimed at stifling the media in the Caribbean country of more than 11 million people.
However, some journalists have publicly supported the bill, noting that it protects freedom of expression without prior censorship and calls for the respect of public criticism.
Under Abinader, a newsroom located inside the National Palace in Santo Domingo was closed and journalists are now required to request access to press conferences and other events up to a week in advance. Under previous presidents, access was automatically granted to the palace with a verified press identification.
Journalists also complain that government security has become more aggressive during press conferences.
"We have seen how politicians repeatedly try to curtail the freedoms we have, not only journalists, cameramen, photo reporters, but it is a freedom that all Dominicans have because you, with access to the Internet, have the right to express yourselves through any social media,” said Jaime Rincón, a reporter with El Nuevo Diario newspaper, told The Associated Press.
During the march, journalists held signs and chanted, “No to censorship! Freedom of press!”
Rosalba Escalante, a reporter with ACD Media, who was recently pushed and stepped on by the security detail of Vice President Raquel Peña, who publicly apologized for the incident, also participated in Tuesday’s march.
“From now on, we are no longer willing to remain silent or stay quiet because all dictatorships worldwide begin with the censorship of the press," she said.
"The censorship of the press begins with violations that initially seem insignificant but have disastrous results.”
Abinader has not responded to the journalists’ allegations, although when asked about the bill during a press conference on Monday he said he was not involved in its creation. “I didn’t even add a comma,” he said.

    STORYLINE:
The U.N. food agency’s country director for Gaza, Antoine Renard, told The Associated Press that a quarter of Gaza’s population is at risk of famine despite the fact that all the food needed to feed the entire population currently sits in warehouses in Israel, Egypt, and Jordan —and most of it is not even 40 kilometers from the conflict-wracked territory.
He said World Food Program warehouses in the strip remain empty, and the agency has gone from providing meals for one million people at the end of April to producing only 250,000 meals daily.
“Soon, we’re going to speak about the fact that people don’t even have access to a meal,” he warned. “Is that where we need to go to actually raise the alarm? It’s now that we need to act.”

  • Judge in Los Angeles to decide whether the Menendez brothers should be freed
    (13 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Los Angeles - 13 May 2025
    1. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman surrounded by the press
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Nathan Hochman, Los Angeles County District Attorney:
"We have said with respect to resentencing - our position is not 'no' or it's not 'never', it's 'not yet'. And the reason we said that is that the Menendez brothers have failed to come clean with the full extent of their criminal conduct, their coverup, their lies and their deceit over the past 30 years."
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Nathan Hochman, Los Angeles County District Attorney:
"It's the expert psychologists' concern in prison that have risen their risk level up to that moderate level. We've also added to it a whole range of lies they have told for the last 30 years, and they've never come clean with, to again show they have not fully accepted responsibility for all their criminal conduct and in our minds not fully then rehabilitated and do constitute the risk for violence as well."
    4. Anamaria Baralt getting out of car
    5. UPSOUND (English) reporter: "How do you feel about taking the stand?"
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Anamaria Baralt, Menendez brothers' cousin:
    "Very nervous, thanks for asking."
    7. UPSOUND (English) reporter: "How do you feel, are you hopeful?"
    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Anamaria Baralt, Menendez brothers' cousin:
    "We're hopeful."
    9. Anamaria Baralt surrounded by the press
    STORYLINE:
After months of delays, a hearing started Tuesday to decide whether Erik and Lyle Menendez should get a chance at freedom after serving nearly 30 years in prison for the double murder of their parents.
A Los Angeles judge is presiding over the resentencing hearing that is expected to last two days. If he shortens their sentences, the brothers would still need approval from the state’s parole board to get out of prison. They could then potentially go free on time served.
The resentencing hearing will center on whether the brothers have been rehabilitated in prison and deserve a lesser sentence of 50 years to life. That would make them eligible for parole under California’s youthful offender law because they committed the crime under the age of 26.
They were sentenced in 1996 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering their father Jose Menendez and mother Kitty Menendez in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. The brothers were 18 and 21 at the time of the killings. While defense attorneys argued the brothers acted out of self-defense after years of sexual abuse by their father, prosecutors said the brothers killed their parents for a multimillion-dollar inheritance.
Due to wildfires in the LA area, and disputes between LA prosecutors and defense attorneys, the hearings were delayed for months.
The case has captured the public’s attention for decades — and last year, the Netflix drama “ Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story ” and documentary “The Menendez Brothers” brought new attention to the case. Supporters of the brothers have flown in from across the country to attend rallies and hearings in the past few months.
The current district attorney Nathan Hochman opposed the brothers’ resentencing. Hochman’s office has said it does not believe that the brothers were sexually abused by their father.
Outside the courthouse Tuesday morning, Hochman said he believes the brothers are not ready for resentencing because “they have not come clean” about their crimes.
“Our position is not ‘no,’ it’s not ‘never,’ it’s ‘not yet,’” Hochman said. “They have not fully accepted responsibility for all their criminal conduct.”

  • Kim Kardashian testifies about being bound and held at gunpoint during Paris robbery | AP Explains

++STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT; PART OVERLAID BY SHOT 3++
"So today was the moment when Kim Kardashian got to say what she described as my truth. It's her version of events of what happened that night in 2016 in the confines of her hotel. It was really quite traumatic at times, in which she described the terror that she'd felt as these two masked men burst in, they stomped up the stairs. She thought at one point that she was going to be raped. A man pulled her along the bed, and then after that she thought she would be killed. She said a silent prayer to herself, thinking of her family, her friends and her sister. And it was really a very long day for her: she spoke for nearly four hours with just a 40-minute break in between answering rounds and rounds of questions that went into the great detail of what happened that night."
    3. Kardashian waving and entering courthouse
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) John Leicester, The Associated Press:
++STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT; PART OVERLAID BY SHOT 5++
"Paris had been a city that she'd loved. She walked around at three or four o'clock in the morning, going window shopping, sometimes stopping for hot chocolate. All of that's finished now. She talked about how she has a phobia of going outside, how she lives with four to six security guards at home."
    5. STILL: Artist sketch of Kim Kardashian testifying regarding a robbery of millions of dollars in jewels from her Paris hotel room in 2016,

++STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT; PART OVERLAID BY SHOTS 7,8++
"Well, this is a jury trial here in France. And so it's going to be to the members of the jury, who will then be weighing all of the evidence. And that evidence still hasn't finished coming. There are more hearings tomorrow. There'll be more hearings in the days ahead. And the verdict is not expected before the end of the month.
    7. Kardashian leaving court after testifying
    8. Kardashian going down courthouse steps, exiting through gate
    STORYLINE:
Kim Kardashian said a silent prayer — for her sister, her best friend, her family — as a masked man pulled her toward him in a Paris hotel room during the 2016 jewelry heist that changed her life.
She wore a bathrobe. Her hands were zip-tied. Her mouth was taped. She thought she wouldn’t survive.
She said she was getting ready for bed when she heard stomping on the stairs. At first, she thought it was her sister Kourtney and a friend returning drunk from a night out at Paris Fashion Week.
She grabbed her phone but didn’t know the French emergency number. She tried to call her sister and bodyguard, but one man stopped her. The men threw her on the bed, zip-tied her hands and pressed a gun to her.
She was carried into the bathroom. One man taped her mouth. She was told she’d be OK if she stayed quiet.
The last time Kardashian saw the men that police say robbed her, she was locked in the marble bathroom while masked assailants stole more than $6 million in jewelry.
On Tuesday, nearly a decade later, she faced them again — this time, from the witness stand.
Her testimony marked the emotional climax of a trial that has gripped France and reignited debates about the cost of fame and what it means to live in public.
French prosecutors say the assailants — most in their 60s and 70s — were part of a seasoned criminal ring. Two defendants have admitted being at the scene. One claims he didn’t know who she was.

    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Adi Alexander, father of the released hostage Edan Alexander:
“For our family, joyful day for which we are in incredible depth and gratitude. Soon, Edan will be home in the United States in New Jersey, watching his little brother play basketball, reuniting with his friends in New Jersey. He's 21 now, and those happy kinds may include a beer too, but we will never forget the first beer he had on the rooftop of this very building since his release."

    10. SOUNDBITE (Hebrew) Yael Alexander, mother of the released hostage Edan Alexander:
“But the most terrible sound that Edan feared was the sound of the war going on above their heads. Deafening explosions, the whistles of missiles, the sounds of collapse, collapse, and the earth shaking. Every moment was about to be the last moment.”

    STORYLINE:
In a statement to the press a day after his release from Gaza, Edan Alexander’s parents said their son described enduring harsh conditions that included hunger, lack of water, and “appalling sanitary conditions.”
His mother, Yael, said he feared for his life every day, “but the most terrible sound that Edan feared was the sound of the war going on above their heads. Deafening explosions, the whistles of missiles, the sounds of collapse, collapse, and the earth shaking."
Alexander’s father, Adi, said Edan would soon be back home in the United States, “watching his little brother play basketball, reuniting with his friends in New Jersey.”
Monday's release of 21-year-old Edan Alexander resulted from negotiations between Hamas and the Trump administration that appeared to have largely bypassed Israel, which made no concessions for his release.
Alexander, who was 19-years-old when he was taken from an Israeli army base during the 2023 attack, was the first hostage released since Israel shattered an eight-week ceasefire with Hamas in March and unleashed fierce strikes on Gaza that have killed hundreds of Palestinians.
“This was a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators — Qatar and Egypt — to put an end to this very brutal war and return ALL living hostages and remains to their loved ones,” Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday evening.
