  • U.S. agriculture secretary speaks on US-UK trade deal
    (13 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    London, UK - 13 May 2025
    1. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins arriving for news conference
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Brooke Rollins, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture:
"I believe so strongly that last Thursday and the announcement marked just the first of hopefully many steps moving forward. Again, the importance from my perspective of this country and our partnership with the United States and as President Trump is moving out across the globe and we as his cabinet are as well to ensure that America that are ag. products, frankly that all of our products are treated fairly on the world stage, that as we're realigning an economy that is based on that fairness and reciprocal trade that this is going to continue to be a significant priority at this administration over the next four years. But starting with the UK and starting with a deal that was announced last Thursday is it from my perspective but I think I speak on behalf of my boss President Trump is just the first step of what hopefully will be many. And the more that we can align and partner with our allies, again, I can't say it enough, food security is national security. The UK, for example, really relies on China and Russia for your seafood. America has extraordinary best-in-class seafood that, let's talk about that. Let's talk how we can also then take some of what you all do best and move it into America as we continue to build that partnership."
    3. Rollins at news conference
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Brooke Rollins, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture:
"It means everything, but certainly pork and poultry are at the front I believe of the line, along with rice and seafood and some other things. But pork and poultry are a very important piece of this. And I believe that, and what has been shown is, that the industries in America which are feeding the world, the opportunity to provide more choice for your consumers here in the UK is just an incredible opportunity to work alongside your leadership to see what that could look like."
    5. News conference in progress
    STORYLINE:
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said on Tuesday the US-UK trade deal is "the first of hopefully many steps moving forward" during her visit to the UK.
The Trump administration announced a trade deal with the United Kingdom last Thursday in grandiose terms, but with only limited details about what it will achieve.
The agreement will open up the British market to American beef, ethanol, and other agricultural products, the White House said.
It will also allow British cars and steel better access to U.S. consumers.
The pact provides some support for President Donald Trump’s arguments that his steep tariffs could lead to agreements that open up overseas markets.
But economists’ initial reactions were cool, with many noting that the United Kingdom isn’t a large enough trading partner for the U.S. to really move the needle for the U.S. economy.
Asked about possible additional products for negotiations with the UK, Rollins told reporters in London "it means everything, but certainly pork and poultry are at the front I believe of the line, along with rice and seafood and some other things".
U.S. President Donald Trump opened his four-day Middle East trip on Tuesday by paying a visit to Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for talks on U.S. efforts to dismantle Iran's nuclear program, end the war in Gaza, hold down oil prices and more.

At least 14 people died and six were hospitalized in critical condition after consuming toxic liquor overnight in northern India, police said Tuesday.
Seven people were arrested on allegations they supplied the toxic liquor in five villages around 19 kilometers (12 miles) from the city of Amritsar in northern Punjab, senior police officer Maninder Singh said.
Police have launched a crackdown to destroy the network of spurious liquor supplies in the area following the incident, Singh said.
The local administration deployed medics to the villages to check on people who drank the contaminated liquor, said Sakshi Sawhney, a senior government official in Amritsar.
Those showing symptoms are being shifted to hospitals to ensure the death toll doesn’t rise, said Sawhney.

    STORYLINE:
The last time Kim Kardashian faced the men that police say robbed her, she was bound with zip ties and held at gunpoint, and feared she might die. On Tuesday, nearly a decade later, she returns to Paris to testify against them.
One of the most recognizable figures on the planet is expected to take the stand against the 10 men accused of orchestrating the 2016 robbery that left her locked in a marble bathroom while masked assailants made off with more than $6 million in jewels.
Kardashian is set to speak about the trauma that reshaped her life and redefined the risks of celebrity in the age of social media. Her appearance is expected to be the most emotionally charged moment of a trial that began last month.
Court officials have been bracing for a crowd, and security is tight. A second courtroom has been opened for journalists following via video feed.
Kardashian’s testimony is expected to revisit, in painful detail, how intruders zip-tied her hands, demanded her ring, and left her believing she might never see her children again.
Twelve suspects were originally charged. One has died. Another has been excused from proceedings due to serious illness. Most are in their 60s and 70s — dubbed les papys braqueurs, or “the grandpa robbers,” by the French press — but investigators insist they were no harmless retirees. Authorities have described them as a seasoned and coordinated criminal group.

The imposition of arbitrary tariffs only aggravates the situation.”

    6. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil
“Our region does not want to be the stage of hegemonic disputes. For more than a decade, CELAC has declared the Latin American and Caribbean region as a peace zone. We do not want to repeat history and try to forge a new world Cold War. Our vocation is to be the axis of a multipolar order where the Global South is duly represented.”

    STORYLINE:
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva warned that imposing arbitrary tariffs would “aggravate” inequities in global trade during his address at the China–CELAC Forum in Beijing on Tuesday.
Speaking to leaders from Latin American and Caribbean countries at the opening ceremony of the ministerial meeting of the forum, Lula emphasized the need to tackle long-standing distortions in international trade, particularly in agriculture, which have disadvantaged developing economies.
“The imposition of arbitrary tariffs only aggravates the situation,” he noted, adding that “The solution for the crisis of multilateralism is not to abandon multilateralism, but to improve the multilateral system.”
In his speech, Lula praised China as Latin America’s second-largest trade partner and a major investor, highlighting China’s support during the COVID-19 pandemic and in financing infrastructure such as ports, highways, and transmission lines in the region.
“To build a shared future, it's necessary to reduce the asymmetries between countries. It is indispensable that cooperation between CELAC and China will contribute to strengthening the manufacturing industry and innovation in the region,” he said.
He rejected hegemonic conflicts and a return to Cold War dynamics, reaffirming CELAC’s commitment to peace and calling for a multipolar global order led by the Global South.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Chilean President Gabriel Boric also spoke at the event.
Lula is on a five-day state visit to China starting from Saturday.

  • Plaintiff speaks after French actor Gérard Depardieu found guilty of sexual assault

    4. SOUNDBITE (French) Carine Durrieu Diebolt, plaintiff's lawyer with 54-year-old plaintiff, a set dresser, standing to her left
"And also, today, as the Cannes Film Festival opens, I’d like the film world to spare a thought for Gérard Depardieu’s victims and some words for the victims of Gérard Depardieu, and to think of the victims."
    5. SOUNDBITE (French) 54-year-old plaintiff:
"Listen, I'm very moved, and I've been more talkative than that. Today I'm finding it hard to express myself, I think everything has been said perfectly well by my lawyer."
    6. Lawyer and plaintiff walking away
    STORYLINE:
Gérard Depardieu was found guilty Tuesday of sexually assaulting two women on the set of a movie in which he starred in 2021 and given an 18-month suspended prison sentence.
The actor, 76, was also fined a total of 29,040 euros (around $32,350), and the court requested that he be registered in the national sex offender database.
He was convicted of having groped a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant during the filming of “Les Volets Verts” (“The Green Shutters”).
The case was widely seen as a key post-#MeToo test of how French society and its film industry address allegations of sexual misconduct involving prominent figures.
Depardieu, who has denied the accusations, didn't attend the hearing in Paris. Depardieu’s lawyer said that his client would appeal the decision.
"It is the victory of two women, but it is the victory of all the women beyond this trial,” said Carine Durrieu-Diebolt, the set dresser's lawyer. “Today, as the Cannes Film Festival opens, I’d like the film world to spare a thought for Gérard Depardieu’s victims."
Depardieu’s long and storied career — he told the court that he’s made more than 250 films — has turned him into a French movie giant.
He was Oscar-nominated in 1991 for his performance as the swordsman and poet Cyrano de Bergerac.
During the four-day trial in March, Depardieu rejected the accusations, saying he’s “not like that.”
He acknowledged that he had used vulgar and sexualized language on the film set and that he grabbed the set dresser's hips during an argument, but denied that his behavior was sexual.
The set dresser described the alleged assault, saying the actor pincered her between his legs as she squeezed past him in a narrow corridor.
She said he grabbed her hips then started “palpating” her behind and “in front, around.” She ran her hands near her buttocks, hips and pubic area to show what she allegedly experienced. She said he then grabbed her chest.
The woman also testified that Depardieu used an obscene expression to ask her to touch his penis and suggested he wanted to rape her. She told the court that the actor’s calm and cooperative attitude during the trial bore no resemblance to his behavior at work.
The other plaintiff, an assistant, said that Depardieu groped her buttocks and her breasts during three separate incidents on the film set.
The Associated Press doesn’t identify by name people who say they were sexually assaulted unless they consent to be named. Neither women has done so in this case.

  • With the retirement of Supreme Court Justice David Souter, President Barack Obama gets his first cha
(1 May 2009) HEADLINE: Obama wants Souter replacement with 'empathy'
CAPTION: With the retirement of Supreme Court Justice David Souter, President Barack Obama gets his first chance to make a mark on the court. Obama says he wants a replacement who has 'empathy'. (May 1)
    [Notes: ANCHOR VOICE]
    ((Souter File))
Justice David Souter has decided to call it quits after 18 years on the Supreme Court.
The veteran member of the court's liberal wing wants to go home to New Hampshire ...
    ((Obama bounds in))
... and broke the news to President Barack Obama, who promptly interrupted the daily White House briefing to shower Souter with praise.
OBAMA: He approached judging as he approaches life, with a feverish work ethic. With integrity, equanimity and compassion.
    ((Court file footage))
So, just three months into his presidency, Obama gets to start putting his stamp on the nation's highest court.
    ((Cutaways))
What's he looking for in a nominee?
OBAMA: I will seek someone who understands that justice isn't about some abstract legal theory or footnote in a casebook, it is also about how our laws affect the daily reality of people's lives.
    ((Standup bridge))
The expectation of course is the president will choose a moderate-to-liberal nominee to replace Souter. So the chances are the ideological balance of the closely divided High Court won't change. But the selection COULD WELL change its gender balance.
((File footage Ginsburg over first sentence of Sherman SOT)
SHERMAN SOT: 10:39:55 "There's a lot of thought that Obama will pick a woman. There's only one on the court right now, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. So it's considered quite likely he'll pick a second woman to join her." FONT: Mark Sherman, AP Supreme Court reporter
    ((Stills graphic))
Topping the list is Solicitor General Elena Kagan, the former dean of Harvard Law School, and sitting judges like and Federal Appeals Court Judge Kim Wardlaw and Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah (LEE'-uh) Ward Sears.
((Granholm file - em 4983 dv Detroit mayor, em 7067 dv governor's meeting))
One possibility from outside the legal world: Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
    ((Back to file of Souter))
Souter, at 69, is ONLY the fifth oldest justice.
    ((Stevens then Ginsburg))
Justice John Paul Stevens is 89, while Ginsburg, who's 76, is battling pancreatic cancer.
    ((File Obama))
Obama could get to replace them both -- though they, too, are liberals.
SHERMAN SOT: 10:41:43 If that were to happen, that would be three appointments, which again it wouldn't necessarily shift the balance on the court. But it would allow Obama to really leave his stamp on the Supreme Court. (:10)
    ((File of Souter naming Bush?))
Then again the court's balance can defy prediction, as it did when George H.W. Bush selected Souter thinking HE'D be getting a reliable conservative.

Boehler: "The president has said all the hostages. One thing you'll find with this president is that he sticks with his promises."
Reporter: "Adam, do you think Israel will resume war at the end of the week when President Trump finishes his trip in the Middle East?"
Boehler: "I think that that is up to Israel and they'll consult with the president. I can't say. Here's the one thing I will say is: this is a moment for Israelis. It was extremely important for Edan Alexander to be put forward, to be released. And I think there is hope of change now."
Reporter: "Do you think that there's a chance now to see a big deal for the release of all remaining 58 hostages and the end of the war?"
Boehler: "I think there's a better chance now than before. I mean, I think Hamas knows that they could pull a deal any day that they want. They need to approach Trump, they need to approach Bibi, and they need set this up the right way. Thank you very much."

    STORYLINE:
The U.S. special Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff met privately with families of the hostages in Tel Aviv’s Hostage’s Square on Tuesday.
Witkoff said he met with Edan Alexander, the Israeli-American soldier released on Monday, and that he was an “incredibly resilient young man.”
Hamas released Alexander who had been held hostage in Gaza for more than 19 months, offering a goodwill gesture toward Trump that could lay the groundwork for a new ceasefire.
Witkoff said negotiations for a more lasting ceasefire have begun, and that he hopes more hostages could be released soon.
Dozens of people stood in the Square and chanted “Bring them home now!”
Witkoff also spoke with and embraced Ruby Chen, whose Israeli-American son, Itay Chen, was abducted to Gaza and later pronounced dead. His body is still held in Gaza.
Trump’s hostage negotiator Adam Boehler also was at the square and told reporters "We're doing our job... There was a lot of back and forth together."
Asked if he sees there's a new chance for a deal to release all the hostages, he said, "I think there's a better chance now than before."
The visits to the Hostage’s Square by the Trump's envoys come as the U.S. president is in Saudi Arabia, the first leg of his three-nation visit to the Middle East this week meant to tackle multiple crises and conflicts across the region.
