A talking parrot has helped bring down an organised crime gang, after a member taught the bird how to say the drug-dealing phrase “two for 25”.

Mango the parrot, who belonged to the girlfriend of ringleader Adam Garnett, was discovered when Lancashire Police officers raided homes in Blackpool, where they seized large amounts of cocaine and heroin.

Donald Trump claimed that he would know “in the first two minutes” of his upcoming meeting with Vladimir Putin if a peace deal could be reached between Russia and Ukraine.

“We’re going to have a meeting with Vladimir Putin, and at the end of that meeting, probably in the first two minutes, I’ll know exactly whether or not a deal can be made,” the president told reporters at a press conference Monday.

A wildfire north of Madrid near Tres Cantos has forced the evacuation of over 1,000 residents as emergency crews battle the spreading flames.

The blaze, fanned by soaring temperatures, began on Sunday (10 August) as part of a series of fires across southern Europe.

Firefighters from the Comunidad de Madrid and the Civil Guard attended the scene, working to contain the fire which threatened homes.

This fire and other blazes across France and Portugal are a direct result of a record-breaking heatwave in the continent, with temperatures in parts of Spain nearing 40°C.

The US and Russian presidents are set to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine at a summit in Alaska.

Donald Trump could invite Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to his summit with Vladimir Putin, the White House has said. The summit to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, which the US president announced on 8 August, remains Trump-Putin for now - but the White House reportedly said Trump is "open" to a three-way meeting. It comes as European leaders including Sir Keir Starmer said the path to peace in Ukraine “cannot be decided without Ukraine”.

Colombian conservative senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay died Monday, more than two months after being shot during a campaign rally in western Bogota.

His wife, María Claudia Tarazona, confirmed the 39-year-old's death early Monday.

Uribe Turbay was critically wounded on June 7 during a campaign rally in the country’s capital, suffering gunshot wounds to the head and leg. He underwent emergency surgery and remained hospitalized in intensive care until his death.

A teenage suspect was arrested at the scene, and authorities have since detained several others.

The incident has raised renewed concerns about political violence in the country.

A British Airways cabin crew member was forced to abandon his dream career eight years after arriving in the UK when the Home Office told him to move to a country where he says he has never lived.

Shady El Farra, a 28-year-old Egyptian national whose primary language is English, came to the UK to study in 2016, having grown up between the United States and Saudi Arabia due to his parents’ jobs as academics.

He was granted a two-year graduate visa in 2021 and started a career at British Airways as a cabin crew member. But he was forced to quit the jobafter an application for a private life visa, which allows people to stay based on strong personal ties to the UK, was rejected by the Home Office in November 2024.
