A car rammed into a restaurant shopfront after breaking loose from its tow strap and rolling down a hill, not once, but twice.

CCTV from 30 July 2025 in Washington state is being shared by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office as a warning of how not to tow a vehicle.

A third attempt also appeared to fail and, after dragging the red car into a bush, was eventually abandoned.

Deputies have asked for the public’s help in identifying the white SUV involved, saying the Pho & Teriyaki restaurant suffered significant damage as a result.

Two Chinese navy boats have smashed into each other while chasing a Philippines-flagged patrol boat. Footage filmed by the Philippine Coast Guard on Monday (11 August) shows a Beijing warship accidentally crashing into the smaller coast guard vessel with a loud bang. The Philippines said that their boat was distributing aid to fishermen in Scarborough Shoal, a contested reef in the South China Sea, when the Chinese coast guard started pursuing them at “high speed”. Commodore Jay Tarriela said that the Chinese smaller ship then performed a “risky manoeuvre” which led to “substantial damage” to the warship’s upper deck, leaving it “unseaworthy”. China said that a confrontation took place but did not specifically mention the collision. Chinese navy boats collide while chasing Philippine patrol vessel.

A group of polar bears enjoyed a cool down in a lake at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park as the UK braces another heatwave.

Footage shared by the wildlife park on Sunday (10 August) shows the mammals splashing around, with one clip showing a pair play-fighting in the cold water.

It comes as the UK faces its fourth heatwave of the year, with temperatures set to soar to as high as 34C on Tuesday (12 August).

A wildfire near the Tres Cantos area of Madrid has forced the evacuation of residents as emergency crews battle the spreading flames.

The blaze broke out on Monday (11 August), Madrid officials said, as part of a series of fires across southern Europe.

Officials said 180 people were evacuated from the Soto de Viñuelas, Fuente El Fresno, and Ciudad del Campo residential areas.

Firefighters from the Comunidad de Madrid and the Civil Guard attended the scene, working to contain the fire which threatened homes.

Scientists are calling the Mediterranean countries “a wildfire hotspot”, with blazes common during hot and dry summers. Climate change is making heatwaves and droughts more frequent and intense.
