A would-be assassin who travelled from the US to shoot a man in Birmingham has been found guilty of conspiracy to murder.

Birmingham Crown Court previously heard that US citizen Aimee Betro, 45, became embroiled in a plot to attack a rival family of Mohammed Nazir and his father Mohammed Aslam.

Betro appeared in the court on Tuesday (12 August). She was found guilty on charges of conspiracy to murder and possessing a self-loading pistol with intent to cause fear of violence.

She was also found guilty by a unanimous verdict on a charge of fraudulently evading the prohibition on importing ammunition.

Betro, who is originally from West Allis in Wisconsin but spent several years in Armenia before her arrest in January. She will be sentenced on 21 August.

An anti-JD Vance van displaying an altered image of the US vice president has driven around a village in the Cotswolds, where the 41-year-old and his family are reportedly holidaying.

Footage shared by political campaign group Everyone Hates Elon on Tuesday (12 August) shows the vehicle, which features a bald Vance, driving through Charlbury.

The group claim that the doctored picture, which is a popular meme online, got a tourist banned from the US after Customs and Border Protection (CBP) found the image on their phone. The CBP has denied this.

Typhoon Podul slams into southern Taiwan, hundreds of flights cancelled. TAIPEI, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Typhoon Podul hit Taiwan's sparsely populated southeast coast on Wednesday packing winds of up to 191 kph (118 mph), as a large swathe of southern and eastern parts of the island shut down and hundreds of flights were cancelled. Taiwan is regularly hit by typhoons, generally along its mountainous east coast facing the Pacific. "Destructive winds from typhoon expected. Take shelter ASAP," read a text message alert issued to cellphone users in parts of Taitung early on Wednesday. The alert warned people of gusts above 150 kph (93 mph) in the coming hours.

Nine cities and counties announced the suspension of work and school for Wednesday, including the southern metropolises of Kaohsiung and Tainan. In the capital Taipei, home to Taiwan's financial markets, there were blustery winds but no impact. Authorities are also working to evacuate those whose homes were damaged by a July typhoon that brought record winds and damaged the electricity grid in a rare direct hit to Taiwan's west coast.

The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight, delivering 2025’s biggest display of ‘shooting stars’. Taking place every August, the Perseids are renowned for the bright, fast meteors that produce long tails as they burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of up to 60 kilometres (37 miles) per second. This year, a full Moon on the 9 August could impact visibility of some of the smaller meteors as the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak. Here’s a full guide to best catch a glimpse of the Perseids this week. When does the 2025 Perseid meteor shower peak? The 2025 Perseids began to appear on 17 July and will continue until 24 August, however the best display of shooting stars will be during the peak on the night of 12-13 August. Between 60-100 meteors will appear every hour under perfect conditions, with the highest intensity taking place just after 3am on Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews are battling multiple wildfires across Spain and Portugal, as a record-breaking heatwave continues across Europe. Firefighters worked through the night on Monday in an effort to contain a blaze burning in the municipality of Tres Cantos, located 23km north of Madrid.
