Four children were among those injured after a car ploughed into a crowd of people during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade, with one child seriously hurt.

Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the Bank Holiday Monday incident was not being treated as terrorism and was believed to be an isolated incident following the arrest of a 53-year-old man at the scene.

The force said the suspect was the driver the of the car, white, British and from the Liverpool area.

At a press conference on Monday evening, Dave Kitchin from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said 27 people were taken to hospital and 20 people were treated at the scene, with four children among the injured.

He said two of those taken to hospital, including one of the children, suffered serious injuries.

Multiple pedestrians have been struck by a vehicle which ploughed into a crowd in Liverpool city centre during the club’s Premier League victory parade.

Merseyside police have arrested a 53-year-old man, who they described as white British and from the Merseyside area, after a car collided with a number of pedestrians on Water Street in Liverpool city centre at 6pm on Monday.

It is not known whether anyone is injured, but eyewitness Natasha Rinaldi said she could hear “screams and screams”. She told Sky News: “It was a horrible scene, nobody was expecting it.”

One eyewitness, Harry Rashid, said the crowd started trying to smash the car’s windows when the driver “put his foot down again and just ploughed through the rest of them, he just kept going."

Emmanuel Macron's office has been forced to play down a video in which his wife, Brigitte, appeared to push him in the face as the couple arrived in Vietnam at the start of a Southeast Asia tour.

The French President’s wife, Brigitte Macron appears to shove her husband before he descended from the presidential plane on Sunday.

She remained hidden behind the plane's fuselage, blocking any view of her body language. The couple then descended the steps together.

An Elysee official played down the moment, denying it showed an argument between the couple: "It was a moment when the president and his wife were relaxing one last time before the start of the trip by having a laugh."
