Donald Trump has been urged to impose major sanctions on Russia after the US president described Vladimir Putin as having “gone absolutely crazy” following a barrage of Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine.

It came as Moscow launched three massive drone and missile attacks at civilian targets across Ukraine in as many days. In what Ukraine said was the largest attack since the full-scale invasion began more than three years ago, Russia fired 355 drones and nine missiles, forcing civilians into underground shelters throughout the country.

Mr Trump responded by suggesting that Putin was “crazy” for stepping up attacks on Ukraine, adding that he “didn’t know what was wrong” with the Russian leader.

“Something has happened to him [Putin]. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” wrote the US president on Truth Social. “I’ve always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that’s proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!”

A car that ploughed into a jubilant crowd of Liverpool FC fans and left nearly 50 injured may have got into the busy Liverpool street by tailgating an ambulance, The Independent understands.

At least 47 people, including four children, were injured after the car appeared to speed up through a crowd of hundreds of people on Water Street at around 6pm on Monday.

King Charles is set to make history and become the second British monarch to give the address at the state opening of the Canadian parliament.

He will deliver the speech from the throne to open the 45th session of Canada’s parliament in Ottawa on Tuesday.

It comes as Canada faces unwanted attention of Mr Trump who has launched a trade war against his neighbour and made threats to annex the country as America’s 51st state.

This is the King’s 20th visit to Canada, where he is the head of state. He is also the head of state of 13 other Commonwealth realms such as Australia and New Zealand.

Four people are still “very, very ill in hospital” after a vehicle ploughed into a crowd in Liverpool city centre during the club’s Premier League victory parade.

Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram issued the concerning update this morning after 47 people were injured in the incident yesterday evening – including four children, with at least one child seriously injured.

King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in Canada for his first visit as head of state on Monday (26 May).

Canadian prime minister Mark Carney greeted the monarch as they disembarked the Royal Canadian Air Force plane that flew them from RAF Brize Norton in the UK to the capital, Ottawa.

Camilla was presented with a bouquet of flowers by schoolgirl Lila Graham, and the couple were warmly welcomed by school groups from Ontario and Quebec, including students enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme.

The King will give the address to open the parliament on Tuesday, and set the Canadian government’s administration legislative programme.

Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the Bank Holiday Monday incident was not being treated as terrorism and was believed to be an isolated incident following the arrest of a 53-year-old man at the scene.
