The world’s first humanoid fighting competition took place on Sunday, 25 May, in Hangzhou, east China, with robots exchanging punches in the ring.

Video shows the robots throwing fists and knees in front of a baying crowd until one loses its balance and falls backward, tumbling outside the ring.

The event is part of the China Media Group World Robot Competition Series, designed to showcase regional robotics industries and promote the integration of science, culture, and tourism.

Lu Xin’s "AI Strategist" claimed the championship title after defeating "Energy Guardian," operated by Hu Yunqian, with knockouts in all three rounds.

The competition series will also include robot football and basketball matches.

A French court will deliver its verdict Wednesday (28 May) in one of the country’s largest-ever child sex abuse cases, which has raised questions about how a pedophile surgeon was able to rape hundreds of victims over a period spanning more than two decades.

Joël Le Scouarnec, a 74-year-old former surgeon, stands accused of raping and sexually assaulting 299 children. On Friday, prosecutors requested the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, describing Le Scouarnec as “a devil in a white coat.” He's already serving a 15-year prison sentence, for a conviction in 2020 for the rape and sexual assault of four children, including two nieces.

The new trial in Brittany, western France, began in February and has laid bare a pattern of abuse between 1989 and 2014. Most of the victims were unconscious or sedated hospital patients at the time of the assaults. The average age was 11. Among the victims were 158 boys and 141 girls.

Elon Musk's SpaceX Starship rocket spun out of control around halfway through its flight on Tuesday, 27 May, without achieving some of its most important testing goals.

The 400-foot-tall (122-metre) rocket system lifted off from the Texas launch site and flew beyond the point of two previous explosive attempts from earlier in 2025.

Contact was lost with the 232-foot lower-stage booster during its descent before it plunged into the sea instead of a controlled splashdown, rather than making the controlled splashdown the company had planned.

Starship began to spin uncontrollably around 30 minutes into the mission after SpaceX cancelled a plan to deploy eight mock Starlink satellites into space as the rocket's dispenser-like mechanism failed to operate as intended.

HBO has officially cast the key roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley in their new television adaptation of JK Rowling’s beloved book series.

Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione, and Alastair Stout has been cast as Ron.

More than 30,000 actors auditioned for the roles after HBO announced an open casting call last year. Filming is expected to begin this summer.

SpaceX is preparing to launch its Starship mega rocket on Tuesday, in what will be the first major test of Elon Musk’s Mars-bound rocket since two explosions scuppered earlier flights in 2025.

It will mark the ninth major flight of the world’s biggest rocket, as SpaceX looks to accelerate testing to meet Mr Musk’s goal of sending it to Mars by the end of 2026.

The prime minister added that the nation’s thoughts are with the victims and the wider community.

Multiple pedestrians have been struck by a vehicle which ploughed into a crowd in Liverpool city centre during the club’s Premier League victory parade.

A 53-year-old man, who police described as white, British and from the Merseyside area, was arrested at the scene of the incident in Water Street at 6pm on Monday.

Emmanuel Macron's office has been forced to play down a video in which his wife, Brigitte, appeared to push him in the face as the couple arrived in Vietnam at the start of a Southeast Asia tour.

The French President’s wife, Brigitte Macron appears to shove her husband before he descended from the presidential plane on Sunday.

She remained hidden behind the plane's fuselage, blocking any view of her body language. The couple then descended the steps together.

An Elysee official played down the moment, denying it showed an argument between the couple: "It was a moment when the president and his wife were relaxing one last time before the start of the trip by having a laugh."
