Sir Keir Starmer has formally signed an agreement to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after a scramble to prevent a further legal challenge following a last-minute injunction to halt the move failed on Thursday morning.

The deal will see the UK give up sovereignty of the island territory to Mauritius with Sir Keir claiming the UK will pay £101m per year for 99 years to lease the US-UK military base on Diego Garcia back from the government, amounting to a total of £10bn over the course of a century.

However, confusion remains over how much the deal will really cost. While the government has insisted the “net value” of the deal will be £3.4bn, because of the impact of inflation, in cash terms, some estimates have put it at as much as £30bn over 99 years, assuming two per cent inflation.

Music talent agent Dave Shapiro was among those killed when a small private plane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood early Thursday, igniting cars and homes and injuring eight people on the ground.

The fiery crash occurred around 3:47 a.m. when a small Cessna 550 abruptly came down into the Murphy Canyon neighborhood.

Shapiro, 42, the owner of Sound Talent Group, was one of at least three people killed in the crash, according to his music talent agency. Company officials told Billboard the plane was carrying other passengers, most of who have not yet been identified, but none survived.

Democrats burst out laughing after House Speaker Mike Johnson sang Donald Trump’s praises.

Johnson made the remarks shortly before the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed Trump’s massive tax and spending bill early Thursday (22 May). The bill passed in a 215-214 vote.

“Today wouldn’t be possible without the leadership of arguably the most powerful, and the most successful and the most respected president in the modern era of the United States,” the Speaker said.

Johnson paused after House Democrats could be heard laughing in the background.

“The White House, the Senate and the House were delivered to the party on this side of the aisle,” Johnson fired back, pointing to the Republicans, adding, “So you can laugh all you want.”

The Justice Secretary warned of having to make “stark choices” in relation to prison reform to ensure a criminal justice system “worthy of the name”, it has been reported.

Plans for long-term reform are expected to be introduced following the independent sentencing review, which is due to be published on Thursday – which could include a scheme through which private companies employ offenders but reduce their wages and give the money to victims, according to The Times.
