A pro-Palestine protester was restrained after demonstrators attempted to disrupt Israel's Eurovision performance at the grand final in Switzerland on Saturday, 17 May.

Youth Demand, which is calling for a trade embargo on Israel, said its supporters David Curry, 22, from Manchester, and Meaghan Leon, 27, from London, had been arrested.

Footage released by the group showed a protester's hair being pulled.

Basel police said: “The organiser handed the two people over to the police.

The police checked the two people and then released them. It is now up to the organiser to decide whether to press charges.”

Pope Leo XIV had his first ride in the popemobile before his inauguration mass in the Vatican’s St. Peter's Square on Sunday, 18 May, in front of world leaders and thousands of well-wishers.

Ahead of the formal ceremony, the pontiff greeted enthusiastic crowds. Faithful held flags and cheered “Viva il Papa!” as Leo, the first American pope, waved back to them as he looped slowly through the square.

A Mexican Navy sailing ship, the Cuauhtémoc, crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge on New York’s East River on Saturday (17 May).

New York Mayor Eric Adams confirmed two people died and 19 people were injured.

He said all those hurt had suffered injuries on the ship and that no one had entered the river in the collision, which occurred just before 9 p.m.

Footage showed the moment the ship’s 147-feet-tall masts strike the bridge.

The New York City Department of Transportation's website says the bridge has a 135ft clearance at its centre.

Pro-Palestine activists marched through the streets of Basel, Switzerland on Saturday to protest Israel’s inclusion in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest.

The activists chanted “Free, free Palestine” and “boycott Israel” as they marched.

Many had smeared themselves with fake blood and held banners and Palestinian flags aloft.

Israeli singer Yuval Raphael performed her song “New Day Will Rise” in the final of the contest on Saturday night, to what BBC commentator Graham Norton called a “mixed response”.

Some audience members booed and two protesters tried to storm the stage during her performance.

Nine people were killed when a Russian drone struck a passenger bus in north-eastern Ukraine, just hours after Moscow and Kyiv held their first face-to-face peace talks since the war began.

Medics, emergency services, and police rushed to the scene of the strike in Bilopillia town in Ukraine’s Sumy region on Saturday morning, according to the head of the regional military administration.

The deadly attack came just hours after Russia and Ukraine agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each, following brief peace talks in Turkey that lasted less than two hours.

Watch live from central London as a pro-Palestine protest takes place in the city on Saturday, 17 May.

The march is taking place on the 77th anniversary of the Nakba.

Meaning “catastrophe” in Arabic, Nakba is the name Palestinians give to the violent displacement of an estimated 750,000 Palestinians from their homes and villages during the fighting surrounding the creation of the modern state of Israel in 1948, which resulted in the permanent displacement of more than half the Palestinian population, according to the UN.

Ahead of the event, the Metropolitan Police set out Public Order Act conditions in place for the protest, highlighting areas on a London map where attendees must remain.

Participants were told to follow the route agreed with the Met, who said the protest should end at 6pm.

A counter-demonstration organised by "Stop The Hate" is expected to gather on the Strand at the north end of Waterloo Bridge. This group was told to remain in a specific area of the Strand by the Met.
