Newly proposed changes to the assisted dying bill have caused controversy as MPs weigh up whether they will continue supporting the legislation at the final vote on Friday.

Put forward by Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, who tabled the original bill, the changes have reformed a major safeguarding measure that was included in the original version.

Ms Leadbeater says her amendment would make the bill “even more robust,” but others have responded critically. Veteran member Diane Abbott, a vocal opponent of the legislation, wrote on X: “Safeguards on the Assisted Dying Bill are collapsing. Rushed, badly thought-out legislation. Needs to be voted down.”

Three Maori Party MPs will be temporarily banned from New Zealand’s parliament for protesting a proposed law change with a haka.

A parliamentary committee has recommended the penalties, understood to be the harshest ever for New Zealand MPs.

They said that the haka – a ceremonial Maori dance made world-famous by the country’s men’s rugby team, the All Blacks – could have intimidated other politicians and constituted contempt of parliament.

Donald Trump says the U.S. and Iran are “very close” to securing a deal that would see America drop its longstanding sanctions and Iran give up the prospect of developing a nuclear weapon.

Speaking during his three-nation tour of the Middle East, Trump said they were “getting close” to securing a deal as Iran had “sort of” agreed to terms.

"I think we're getting close to maybe doing a deal,” he said in Qatar.

Trump has repeatedly said that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and earlier in his Gulf nations tour he warned U.S. could be forced to take a “violent course” with Iran if the friendly course of action does not work.

Three people including two firefighters have died after a huge fire ripped through a former RAF base in Oxfordshire.

Oxfordshire County Council said two firefighters died while tackling the inferno at Bicester Motion on Thursday, with two more rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

A member of the public also died, the council added. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing in the sky for miles following the fire at the site which had been converted for use by businesses.

Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv was sending a delegation led by defence minister Rustem Umerov for peace talks with a Russian team in Istanbul after it became clear Vladimir Putin would not be attending, dashing hopes of a breakthrough.

The warring parties are holding direct talks for the first time since March 2022.

However, US president Donald Trump said no movement should be expected unless he and Mr Putin “get together”.

US secretary of state Marco Rubio echoed that view, telling reporters that Washington "didn't have high expectations" for the talks in Istanbul.
