President Donald Trump says his meeting with Syrian interim president Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa went "great" and called the former Al Qaeda affiliate leader — who is still designated as a terrorist by the U.S. government — a “young, attractive guy" and a "tough guy" with a "very strong past" as a "fighter."

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said al-Sharaa has "a real shot at holding it together" and further stated that Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan feels similarly.

He added that in his view, Syria would eventually join the Abraham Accords, the US-backed normalization agreements between multiple Arab states and Israel.

“I think they have to get themselves straightened up. I told him, ‘I hope you’re going to join when it’s straightened out.’ He said, ‘Yes.’ But they have a lot of work to do," he said.

A day after it was revealed the Cannes Film Festival was banning nudity and “voluminous outfits” from its red carpets and beyond, long trains and massive dresses still captivated attention.

Heidi Klum, who in previous years brought sheer looks to Cannes, flouted the large dress ban with a pink-and-white gown with a massive train. Bella Hadid, whose daring looks had become a staple of the Cannes carpet, opted for a relatively demure black dress (and blonder hair), on the other hand.

Chinese actor Wan QianHui posed with a massive, cloudlike white dress that looked like it had giant cotton balls attached to it on the steps outside the Palais.

David Beckham tried out a new skill in his home gym, but wife Victoria was not too impressed.

The former footballer showed off his dog training skills with one of the family’s springer spaniels, to which his wife made a joke about him procrastinating from his workout.

In the video, posted to Instagram on Wednesday (14 May), the 50-year-old joked he was creating his own Crufts dog show.

The post comes amid rumours of a feud between the couple and their eldest son Brooklyn, who missed his father’s 50th birthday celebrations earlier this month.

Donald Trump appeared to refuse to drink coffee offered to him by Saudi officials during a royal welcome ceremony.

The US president, who arrived for his landmark Middle East trip on Tuesday (13 May), was given a lavish welcome by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, with national anthems of both nations played.

After formal introductions were made, the coffee and tea ceremony took place.

Trump accepted the cup and placed it on his lap.

His counterparts all drank their drinks while Trump awkwardly looked around.

Sir Keir Starmer is set to face tough questions during Prime Minister’s Questions, as he continues to face criticism for his “island of stranger speech”.

The prime minister faced backlash from members of his own party after his speech unveiling the government’s new immigration measures was compared to inflammatory rhetoric used by Enoch Powell in his “rivers of blood” speech.

Downing Street was forced to deny the comparison and said Sir Keir “completely rejects” the suggestions he echoed Powell, and stands by his words.

“We completely reject that comparison,” the prime minister’s spokesperson told reporters.

“The Prime Minister rejects those comparisons and absolutely stands behind the argument he was making that migrants make a massive contribution to our country, but migration needs to be controlled.”

He will face questions in the Commons at noon, the majority from the Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who criticised Sir Keir and said Labour doesn’t believe in secure borders.

Vladimir Putin blasted the West’s “moron” leaders for threatening Russia with new sanctions if he refuses to meet Volodymyr Zelensky for ceasefire negotiations on Thursday.

Speaking at the 20th Congress of the Business Russia Organisation on Tuesday (13 May), Putin said: “You'd think they wouldn't do this or that, since it clearly hurts them, but nope, they still do it.”

He then exclaimed: “Morons!”

His comment was met with laughter from the audience, before Putin went on to apologise, adding: “The world's top economies are tipping into recession just to spite us.”
