At least four people died and more than 50 people were missing after a flash flood washed away a village in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand on Tuesday, 5 August.

Footage aired by local broadcaster NDTV showed floodwaters rushing down a mountainside in Uttarkashi district before crashing into a hamlet in the foothills, tearing through houses and destroying a road.

Videos recorded by tourists showed a violent stream sweeping away several houses and vegetation. “Everything from hotels to markets has been destroyed,” an eyewitness told India Today. “I haven't witnessed a disaster like this before."

The Uttarakhand police said rising water levels in the Harshil area of Uttarkashi posed a serious threat, warning residents via social media to stay away from rivers.

Donald Trump took an unexpected walk across the White House roof on Tuesday (5 August), announcing that he was "taking a little walk" when asked why he was up there.

The US president emerged from a door connected to the State Dining Room and stepped onto the roof above the press briefing room and west colonnade, spending almost 20 minutes surveying the rooftop and grounds below, including the newly-paved Rose Garden.

In July, the White House announced that construction on a huge, new $200m ballroom would begin in September. It is the first structural change to the Executive Mansion itself since the addition of the Truman balcony in 1948.

Shocking footage shows London's Hammersmith Bridge apparently alight as dozens of flares and fireworks were set off on Sunday.

A hedge at nearby St Paul's School was also set alight at around 9.30pm after flares and fireworks were fired from the bridge.

Will, a 22-year-old local resident, filmed the incident from his home nearby.

The recent graduate said: "We heard this loud banging outside - looked out the window and the whole bridge was shrouded in red.

Airdrops are always a last resort, a desperate measure. That is because it rarely gets to those who are most in need, it can be dangerous and there are safer simpler routes via land UN officials have told The Independent – those dying of starvation are too weak to endure the hunger games to grab it.

Sometimes it lands in the sea. Sometimes it lands on the very people it is supposed to save, with fatal consequences.

“Like all the young men, Oday waited in the scorching sun for four hours. But when the planes arrived, he couldn’t get out of the way in time,” said Moatasem al-Quraan, 31, from central Gaza, about his cousin, nurse Oday al-Quraan, who was crushed to death earlier on Monday.

Tourists fled an Italian beach after a tornado sent parasols and beach towels flying through the air in Maccarese, north of Rome.

Video posted to Facebook by Fregene Beach shows umbrellas and beach items swept into the air as panicked beachgoers sprinted for safety.

Locals and tourists clutched their belongings as winds ripped parasols from the ground.

“Impressive spectacle today: umbrellas flapping and strong winds on the beach,” Fregene Beach wrote on Sunday (3 August).

“Fortunately, it seems no one was hurt, but what an incredible scene!”

Timelapse footage showed thick plumes of smoke from a wildfire in California, which caused injuries and prompted evacuation orders, according to officials.

The Gifford Fire, which started on Friday (August 1) afternoon, is churning through the brush-covered hillsides in Los Padres National Forest in Solvang, California.

As of Monday (August 4), the wildfire has engulfed more than 72,000 acres and is only 3% contained, according to Cal Fire.
