King Charles III has vowed that the service and sacrifice of VJ Day heroes “shall never be forgotten” on the 80th anniversary of the date in 1945 when Japan surrendered to the Allied forces during the Second World War.

His Majesty, in what is believed to be the most direct reference by a British monarch to the suffering in Hiroshima and Nagasaki following the nuclear attacks which led to Japan’s surrender, said it was right to pause and acknowledge the impact of the “war’s final act” on the people of the cities.

“Innocent civilian populations of occupied territories faced grievous hardships, too,” he said in the broadcast released at 7.30am on Friday, 15 August.

Ninety years after they were first made, Dame Vera Lynn’s audition recordings are set to be released for the first time.

The late singer’s earliest records were uncovered when her daughter, Virginia Lewis-Jones, donated her mother’s collection to the British Library’s Sound Archive.

U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, Trump said on Friday. White House Officials have confirmed the meeting will take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.

Three men have been jailed after kidnapping a pregnant mother from outside her home and threatening to cut her fingers off, the Metropolitan Police have said.

Audi Johnson, 35, Ahmad Ghiasi, 26, and Nicholas Mitchell, 55, bundled their victim who was six months pregnant, into the back of a van after she left her north London home on the morning of May 10, 2024.

She was blindfolded and bound at the wrist with cable ties by the gang as they sped away, before they fired questions at about her partner where one of them threatened: “If you lie to me I’m gonna kick the baby out your stomach.”

Johnson, Ghiasi and Mitchell were found guilty of conspiracy to kidnap last month after a six-week trial at Kingston Crown Court.

They were members of a London-based gang, who had been contracted to carry out the kidnapping, the force said.

The 36 year-old woman said she has not been able to go home since the traumatic ordeal and spent the rest of her pregnancy sleeping on her sister’s couch.

This is the moment a Russian government plan landed in Alaska ahead of Vladimir Putin’s meeting with US president Donald Trump.

Flight radar shows flight RSD381 travelling from Moscow before entering US airspace, and landing in Anchorage on Thursday (14 August).

Friday’s talks between the presidents will include a one-on-one meeting, a bilateral lunch with both delegations and a press conference, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is calling for a Nov. 4 special election on new U.S. House maps designed to win more Democratic seats.

His move is in response to Republican efforts to pick up five seats in Texas. Newsom released a campaign ad on social media Thursday as Democrats kicked off a press conference.

State lawmakers technically need to declare the special election and they plan to do so next week.
