A huge explosion shook the centre of Rome on Friday (4 July), leaving 21 people injured as locals rushed to safety.

A fire is understood to have broken out at a petrol station at around 8am local time which resulted in two explosions, with the second being the largest.

Footage of the aftermath of the explosions shows a billow of large black smoke and burning wreckage of the building, as firefighters work to tackle the blaze.

Eight police officers and one firefighter were reportedly injured in the explosions which occurred on the Via dei Gordiani road, in the Prenestino region of the capital, local media reports.

"We are working on a tank explosion ... the fire is still ongoing," the fire department said in a statement.

Several people have been injured and residents have been forced to flee after an explosion at a petrol station in Rome on Friday morning.

Images from the scene show an enormous orange fireball in the sky, and videos show a huge plume of dark grey smoke billowing over buildings in Rome.

Eyewitnesses shared videos showing smoke billowing from the area with police already blocking the street, before an enormous fireball erupts.

Eight police officers and one firefighter were reportedly injured in the explosion, according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, as fire crews continue to work to put out the blaze.

Some residents told Corriere that “pieces of glass and iron were flying” in the explosion, which rocked nearby buildings.

A fire broke out at first, followed by two explosions in quick succession around 8.18am local time, according to local media. The second blast was the biggest.

Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni has spoken to the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri about the incident, Corriere reports.

The explosion occurred near via de Gordiani 32 in the district of Prenestino, in Rome’s southeast.

While talking about the special events the country will hold in the year-long countdown to its 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, Trump told a crowd of Iowans: "We're gonna have a UFC fight on the grounds of the White House. We have a lot of land there."

Drone footage captured the huge scale of powerful tributes to Diogo Jota from Liverpool fans at Anfield after the footballer was killed in a car crash in Spain on Thursday, 3 July.

The 28-year-old forward had been travelling in a Lamborghini with his brother Andre Silva when the car veered off the road and burst into flames following what police suspect was a tyre blowout while overtaking.

The incident happened just 11 days after Jota, a father of three, married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, in Porto, Portugal.

Flowers and Liverpool shirts were laid outside the stadium in tribute.

Spain and Portugal players honoured Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva before their Euro 2025 match on Thursday (3 July) after they were killed in a car crash that morning.

The 28-year-old and 26-year old had been travelling in a Lamborghini when the car veered off the road and burst into flames following what police suspect was a tyre blowout while overtaking.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died aged 28 after a car crash in Spain.

Jota was in the car with his 26-year-old brother, Andre, a footballer for FC Penafiel in Portugal, who also died. No other vehicles were involved in the crash shortly after midnight local time, Spanish authorities said.

It has been just two weeks since the 28-year-old star married long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Porto. “A day we will never forget,” reads the caption of his last Instagram post, which shows a video of the wedding day.

This is the moment a U.S. influencer and teen pilot landed without authorisation in Chilean Antarctica, prompting his arrest.

Ethan Guo, 19, was flying a Cessna 182 from Punta Arenas on Saturday, June 28, when he diverted from his approved flight plan and touched down at Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Martin Airport in Antarctica.

He appeared before a Chilean judge via video on Sunday, June 29, and claimed technical issues forced the diversion, according to his lawyer.

Guo was attempting to become “the first person in history to fly solo to all seven continents in a small aircraft and raise $1 million for cancer research,” according to his website.
