  • 29 Years of Silence: Duty, Resilience, and the Human Cost of Telling a Buried Story with Jack Daly

What does it do to a person to carry a life-changing experience for nearly three decades without being able to publicly tell the full story?

In this episode of the Mind Over Habit Podcast, Moses sits down with retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander and former Naval Intelligence officer Jack Daly, author of Blind Treason: The True-Life Story of an American Spy Left Out in the Cold.

Jack's memoir recounts his account of an April 4, 1997 surveillance mission in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, during which he says he and Royal Canadian Air Force Captain Patrick Barnes were struck in the eyes by a Russian directed-energy weapon. Jack says the incident was subsequently denied by U.S. authorities and that the consequences shaped his career and personal life for decades.

His book, released September 6, 2026, documents his account and the records surrounding the incident after years in which he says he was unable to speak publicly about the classified details.

But beyond national security and military intelligence, this is a deeply human story about resilience, duty, silence, grief, identity, and what happens when someone has to carry an unresolved experience for years.
